Shopping in Our Life
Going shopping is a part of our everyday life. For some people it's a pleasant pastime while for others it's an everyday routine. Some people like doing shopping and they are happy if they can pick up a bargain in the sales, for others yawn while walking along the shelves in a shop. But whether you like shopping or not you have to do it because it's a necessity.

I'd like to say that at present shopping has become more exciting than it used to be several decades ago. Today people do a lot of shopping or at least window-shopping every day, because all necessary facilities are provided for them. In large cities and even in small towns there are all kinds of shops and stores as well as supermarkets.

Supermarkets are big self-service food shops (and not only food nowadays) where one can buy a lot of goods cheaper than at local grocer's. When people go to supermarkets or other large food stores they are often looking for bargains. By the way these shops are brightly lit and usually well laid out; pleasant music is always playing while you are walking along the shop. The goods are tidily arranged on trays and long endless shelves on which various prices are clearly marked. The shelves are well stocked with a wide selection of attractively packed goods. Everything from quick-frozen food to washing powder, from shoe-polish to new-laid eggs, from tinned fish to tooth paste can be bought there. All these things are displayed in such a way that people are often tempted to purchase things they don't need. It's a so called marketing trick; that's why it's better to make shopping list before going to a shop. With shopping list you can avoid several costly mistakes like impulse purchases that will run up your grocery bill and extra trips to the store. A shopping list can also help you to avoid overbuying perishables so that you can eliminate wasteful spoilage. After a person has found everything he needs he takes his trolley and goes to the cash desk where a casher reckons up bills on a cash register. There are often long queues there, but they do not spoil the general pleasure of visiting such shops.

My School

Hi! My name is Bob. I am going to tell you about my school. My school is new and modern and I like it very much. It has three floors. The classrooms are light and spacious. There are classrooms for different subjects, such as English, History, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography, Biology Literature etc. my favourite school subjects are English and Geography because I like learning the cultures of different countries.

There is a computer class in our school. We study computer science here. The computer class has the most modern equipment and the Internet access.

We’ve also an assembly hall, which is situated on the second floor. Meetings, conferences, concerts and all the celebrations take place here. We prepare different performances for all holidays. We sing songs, recite poetry, dance, and participate in theatre performances.

There are many opportunities to go in for sports in our school. Our school has a gym, a sports ground, a football field, a swimming pool, and other sports facilities. There are many different sports groups: table tennis, swimming, athletics, football, volleyball, wrestling, and rhythmic gymnastics. Many pupils of our school attend these sports groups.

In our school we have also painting group, dance group, theatre group and rock group. All these groups are very popular and many pupils attend them.

The teachers in our school are very skilled. They try to give us all their knowledge and awake our interest to their subjects and to self study. Besides the school subjects, our teachers tell us about everything, about different problems of our world, such as ecology, nature protection, climate changes etc.

There is a good tradition in our school. Every year people who graduated our school come here to meet their teachers and classmates. These meetings take place every first Saturday of February.

I. Presentation

A. B.

C. D.
1. Do you lead a healthy lifestyle?

Is it popular nowadays to lead a healthy lifestyle?
2. Mind-mapping. Make a mind-map about school. Write as many associations as you can. Speak on your associations and explain.
3. Put it together: the paragraphs below are not in the correct order. Put a number in front of each of the paragraphs so that you would have a text about healthy lifestyle
Healthy Lifestyle Today

A) There are certain laws of health which deserve particular attention and they are so simple that even a child can learn them. A certain amount of exercise is necessary to keep the body in perfect condition. All the powers (mental and bodily) we possess are strengthened by use and weakened by disuse. Moderation in eating and drinking, reasonable hours of labour and study, enough sleeping time (not less than 7-8 hours a day), regularity in exercise, recreation and rest, cleanliness lay the foundations for health and long healthy happy life.

B) Thousands of people consider sports to be very helpful in gaining good health. That's why every country pays much attention to developing sports. It is sport that helps to bring up physically strong, strong-willed, courageous and energetic people.

C) Indeed, sport is a part of everyday life of many generations all other the world. So if you think that physical fitness and health are important you are to go in for sports.

D) In the last ten years recreational sport has become extremely popular, and, according to doctors is absolutely essential for a long and healthy life.

E) People say, "Health is above wealth." One of the first duties we owe to ourselves is to keep our bodies in perfect health. If your body suffers from any disorder, our mind suffers with it, and we are unable to make much progress in knowledge, and we are unfit to perform those duties, which are required of us in social life.

F) Physical training is an essential part of young people's development. All pupils and students have regular training at PT lessons. These classes are enjoyed by everybody as they give a lot of energy, develop muscles, make pupils strong, quick and healthy. From time to time different kinds of competitions are organized at school or between schools. The most popular sports at school are basketball, football and volleyball. Besides, pupils and students attend a lot of sports clubs and sports sections after classes, where they take up their favourite kind of sport.

G) The reasons of this enormous interest in sport of all kinds are varied. When you ask people why they spend so much time, effort, and sometimes money, they will talk about the physical benefits (feeling fit, increasing stamina, sleeping better, the chance of living a more active life), psychological benefits (self-discipline and respect, a sense of personal achievement, relaxation, getting rid of aggression), and the social advantages (meeting people with similar interests, the team spirit). However, the social aspect seems to be more important for men than for women. Very often, enjoying a drink with friends after the match is as important for the former as a physical activity itself. The latter generally see sport as a way of keeping fit rather than anything else.

II. Practice

Here are some general statements about healthy lifestyle. Express your own opinion about it.

  10. Epicurus It is not so much our friends' help that helps us as the confident knowledge that they will help us.

3. Read the text and retell it in groups sentence by sentence.
Friendship

Hello, my name is Sam. I have got many friends and they are very important for me. What is friendship? Some people will say that it is a feeling of mutual liking between two or more people, other will add that it is a state when one person understands and supports the other one.

To my mind friendship can be compared to a tree. Its seed should find good soil and under good conditions it will grow into a tree. As the years go by the tree stands firmer and firmer on the ground. And if it is strong enough, it will survive all the storms and winds. But to help it, we should take care of it and love it.

The most important feeling that exists between friends is trust. It newer appears by itself, it's the result of a long friendship and this feeling is very valuable. Respect and tolerance are also very important; it means that you don't criticize your friend's way of living, but try to understand him, discuss problems with him and explain to him what you think is good and what is bad. A friend is a person who can help you in time, lend you any sum of money for a long period of time without any percent, whom you can wake up in the middle of the night just to say you feel worried or who is eager to do everything for you waiting nothing in return, who supports you in all your beginnings and who will never betray you.

Lucky are those people who have friends. I'm happy to have lots of friends, too. Some of them are very close, some are less. But all of them make my life interesting and enjoyable.

I appreciate friendship. It makes happiness grow brighter and grief less painful, because we have friends to share it with. When we doubt our ability to fulfill our aspiration or to reach our secret goal it is our best friend who gives us a spark of assurance. And we trust our friends and we are grateful to them. Friendship is a bridge between loneliness and fellowship, frustration and confidence, despair and hope, setbacks and success. That's why a true friend is a priceless gift. They are rich who have true friends, says a proverb and I agree.

II. Practice

Read the statements and say they are true or false.

1. Sam has got not many friends.

2. To his mind friendship can be compared to a tree.

3. The most important feeling that exists between friends is understanding.

4. All Sam’s friends are very close.

5. Sam appreciates friendship.

6. A true friend is a priceless gift.

III. Production

1. Work in pairs. Imagine that you have quarreled with your close friend. How are you going to make it up with him?

2. Project work. Describe the main features of an ideal friend.

Topic №6. GREAT BRITAIN
I. Presentation
Before you read:

Have you ever been to Great Britain? Would you like to go there?
Great Britain

There are four parts in the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Wales is approximately 242 kilometres from north to south. About two-thirds of the population live in the south of Wales where three biggest towns are situated. They are Swansea, Cardiff (which is the capital of Wales) and Newport. The climate of Wales is mild, as the mountains protect the region from cold.

The Leek and the Daffodil are the symbols of Wales. The Welsh celebrates St. David’s Day when they wear leeks or daffodils.

Scotland is a mountainous area. The Highlands of Scotland are famous for the highest mountains of Great Britain. The Highlands occupy the biggest part of Scotland making it the highland territory. The only low land is where Glasgow is situated. Scotland’s territory is washed by the river Clyde. The capital of the region is Edinburgh standing on the river Forth. This city is built on rocky hills.

The symbol of Scotland is the Thistle. In ancient times the Norsemen landed somewhere on the east coast of Scotland to settle in the country. The Scots occupied the land along the river Tay, the largest in Scotland. They arrived late at night, tired after a long march. The Norsemen crossed the Tay to attack the Scots by surprise. So they took off their shoes not to make any noise, but one of the Norsemen stepped on a thistle and cried with pain. The Scots were woken up and alarm was given in their camp. They won the battle against the Norsemen and since then the thistle has become the official symbol of Scotland.

When you go down to the south of Scotland crossing the Cheviot Hills, you find yourself in England. The Red Rose is the symbol of the region. The capital of England and Great Britain is London, one of the most ancient and beautiful cities in Europe. Tourists from all over the world come there to visit its numerous places of interest: museums, galleries, parks, shops and many others.

Northern Ireland is the fourth region of the UK and it is situated in the north of the Isle of Ireland. It is separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. It is one of the youngest capitals in the world famous for shipbuilding. The symbol of Northern Ireland is the Shamrock.
