ПРИЛОЖЕНИЕ №1 Try to identity the meaning of the following words. Find the words with their definitions.
№2 It is anti-democratic and brings Britain back. People don't differentiate between the words 'monarchy' and 'royal family'. The young royals spoiled the reputation of the monarchy very much. Despite the anti-monarchical feeling that exists in the country, however, it is-still hard to discover a strong movement toward a republic in Britain. The Independent, one of the Britain's most respected broadsheet newspapers that started the debate on this issue, still favors the retention of Queen I Elizabeth as the head of state, until her death. Winston Churchill often described parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarch as not perfect - but the best that the man had yet created. It is human nature to need a leader in the helm. №3 The British Monarchy is one of the world's oldest monarchies, with an almost unbroken line of kings and queens stretching back to at least the ninth century. Since the ninth century there has been only one short interruption in the history of the monarchy. In 1642, a Civil War began in England, and in 1649 King Charles I was defeated by a parliamentary army led by Oliver Cromwell and he was executed. Britain remained a republic only 11 years, however. In 1660 the son of the executed Charles I, Charles n, was restored to the throne and Britain has remained a monarchy ever since. №4 The UK is a constitutional monarchy. This means that it has a monarch (a king or a queen) as it's Head of State. The monarch reigns with the agreement of Parliament. The powers of monarch are not defined precisely. Everything today is done in the Queen's name. It's Her Majesty's» government, "Her Majesty's" armed forces, "Her Majesty's" law courts and so on.' The Queen has powers that can surprise many. She can choose a Prime Minister, dissolve (распустить) Parliament and declare war like an absolute monarch. But in reality, she does not have these powers and acts under the tradition on the advice of Parliament. №5 The British monarch has served both the Empire and the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth is the head of state not only of one small island nation, but also of the 53 nations of the Commonwealth, with the population of 1.5 billion. In short, she is the head of state to more than one quarter of the earth's inhabitants. It evokes a sense of unity between nations. Once the British Empire included a large number of countries all over the world ruled by Britain. Now there is no longer an empire. But the British ruling classes tried not to lose influence over the former colonies. An association of former members of the British Empire and Britain was founded in 1949. It is called the Commonwealth. It includes many countries such as Ireland, Burma, the Sudan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and others. The Queen of Great Britain is also the Head of the Commonwealth, and so the Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand. The Queen is very rich, as are other members of the Royal Family. In addition the government pays for her expences as Head of State, for a royal yacht, train and aircraft, as well as for the upkeep of several palaces. The Queen's image appears on stamps, notes and coins. №6 Elizabeth II, Queen of the U.K was born in London in 1926 as the eldest daughter of the duke and duchess of York. She grew up in a happy home and was educated privately. Her father became king in 1936. Her great-father was King George V, her great-grandfather was King — Edward VII and her great-great-grandmother was Queen Victoria. In 1947 Princess Elizabeth was married to Philip Mountatien, who received the title of Duke of Edinburgh. They have four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward. When George VI died in 1952, Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth the Second of Britain. The coronation, took place at Westminster Abbey. Elizabeth II is one of the richest women in the world. Her son Charles, the future king of Britain, has two sons. Queen. Elizabeth II has four children. The eldest child is Prince Charles, who qualified as a Royal Air Force pilot and is now Prince of Wales and heir to the throne; Princess Anne, now the Princess Royal, represented Britain in horse-riding at the Olympic Games and is a member of the international Olympic committee; Prince Andrew, now the Duke of York is serving naval officer; Prince Edward has worked in the theatre. №7 Another Day in the Life of the Queen Queen Elizabeth II wakes up at 7 o'clock, has a cup of tea and reads the Times. Then she has a bath and gets dressed. At 8 o'clock she listens to BBC news and has breakfast with Prince Philip. Then she reads personal letters and has an important business consultation with Private Secretary and then works at government documents. At 1 o'clock she has a quick lunch in her private apartment in Buckingham Palace and at 2 o'clock leaves the Palace to open a new hospital. There she makes speeches, shakes hands and has a cup of tea. At 4.45 she is back at the Palace and works in her office. At 5.30 she receives foreign visitors and then has the final meeting with her Private Secretary. In the evening she goes to St. James' Palace where she has a reception party and talks with 70 people. Then she goes back to the Palace and at 8.30 has dinner with Philip and a group of some businessmen. At 10 she watches television news and then reads some-official papers and telephones some members of the Royal Family — -just to see if all is well. At about 11 she goes to bed.
