Практические задания:

  1. Characterize the main periods of the Roman invasion of Britain and the Romanization of the Celts.

The Roman province of Britannia covered most of present-day England and Wales, where the Romans imposed their own way of life and culture, making use of the existing Celtic aristocracy to govern and encouraging them to adopt Roman dress and the Latin language. They never went to Ireland and exerted an influence, without actually governing there, over only the southern part of Scotland. It was during this time that a Celtic tribe called the Scots migrated from Ireland to Scotland, where, along with another tribe, the Picts, they became opponents of the Romans. This division of the Celts into those who experienced Roman rule (the Britons in England and Wales) and those who did not (the Gaels in Ireland and Scotland) may help to explain the emergence of two distinct branches of the Celtic group of languages.

  1. Comment on the influence of the Norman Conquest on England in general.

Unlike the Germanic invasions, the Norman invasion was small-scale. There was no such thing as a Norman area of settlement. Instead, the Norman soldiers who had invaded were given the ownership of land – and of the people living on it. A strict feudal system was imposed. Great nobles, or barons, were responsible directly to the king; lesser lords, each owning a village, were directly responsible to a baron. Under them were the peasants, tied by a strict system of mutual duties and obligations to the local lord, and forbidden to travel without his permission. The peasants were the English-speaking Saxons. The lords and the barons were the French-speaking Normans. As an example of the class distinctions introduced into society after the Norman invasion, people often point to the fact that modern English has two words for the larger farm animals: one for the living animal (cow, pig, sheep) and another for the animal you eat (beef, pork, mutton). The former set came from Anglo-Saxon, the latter from the French that the Normans brought to England.

  1. Discuss the national identity in Great Britain.

National (ethnic) loyalties can be strong among the people in Britain whose ancestors were not English. For many people living in England who call themselves Scottish, Welsh or Irish, this loyalty is little more than a matter of emotional attachment. But for others, it goes a bit further and they may even join one of the sporting and social clubs for ‘exiles’ from one of these nations. These clubs promote national folk music, organize parties on special national days and foster a consciousness of doing things differently from the English. For people living in Scotland, there are constant reminders of their distinctiveness. First, several important aspects of public life, such as education and the legal and welfare systems, are organised separately, and differently, from the rest of Britain. Second, the Scottish way of speaking is very distinctive. A modern form of the dialect known as Scots is spoken in everyday life by most of the working classes in the lowlands. It has many features which are different from other forms of English and cannot usually be undestood by English or Welsh people. Third, there are many symbols of Scottishness which are well-known throughout Britain.

  1. Comment the struggle between the Tories and Whigs. Characterize Walpole as the Prime minister of the English government.

Toryism embodied its respect for monarch and reverence for Church of England. But they deeply resented the power of the great nobility and the money they used to secure political advantage. Whigism was aimed to favour government by monarchy and aristocracy, and toleration of groups outside the Church of England. In the 19th century the Tories became the Conservatives and the Whigs became the Liberals.

The Tories were out of favour with the House of Hannover and for half a century governments were almost exclusively drawn from the ranks of the Whigs. From 1772 to 1742 politics were dominated by Sir Robert Walpole. He pursued peace abroad and the encouragement of trade. Such a policy met a favorable response from county members who paid a relatively low land tax a result of peace. But Walpole was solidly opposed in the Commons. He was charged with making himself rich at the expense of public purse. In reality the opposition was made up of men who disliked Walpole for personal reasons.
5. Describe the changing relations between religion and politics in British history. Are the changes that have taken place similar to those in your country?

Henry VIII is one of the most well-known monarchs in English history, chiefly because he took six wives during his life. He has the popular image of a bon viveur. There is much truth in this reputation. He was a natural leader but not really interested in the day-to-day running of government and this encouraged the beginnings of the professional bureaucracy. It was during his reign that the reformation took place. In the 1530s, Henry used Parliament to pass laws which swept away the power of the Roman Church in England. However, his quarrel with Rome was nothing to do with doctrine. It was because he wanted to be free to marry again and to appoint who he wished as leaders of the church in England. Earlier in the same decade, he had had a law passed which demanded complete adherence to Catholic belief and practice. He had also previously written a polemic against Protestantism, for which the pope gave him the title Fidei Defensor (defender of the faith). The initials F.D. still appear on British coins today. Also, by making himself head of the ‘Church of England’, independent of Rome, all church lands came under his control and gave him a large new source of income.
6. Analyze what measures undertaken by the British Government led to the Boston Massacre? Discuss the idea expressed by Thomas Paine: “Was Britain our parent? – No, it was a stepmother, more precisely, a wicked stepmother.”

In 1767 the British Parliament passed new taxes on tea, paper, paint and various goods that the colonists imported from abroad. And again the colonists refused to pay. Riots broke out in Boston and Great Britain sent soldiers to keep order. This event was named the Boston Massacre. The Boston Massacre was an incident that led to the deaths of five civilians at the hands of British troops on March 5, 1770. The British military presence in Boston led to a tense situation when soldiers after being attacked by a rioting crowd started firing. Three civilians were killed at the scene of the shooting, eleven were injured, and two died after the incident. It directed American public opinion against Great Britain, strengthened the opposition to the British rule and helped spark the rebellion in some of the British American colonies, which led to the American Revolution.
7. Comment on the basic ideas of the US Constitution. What is its structure? Choose two or three articles from the Constitution and comment on their importance.

The text of the US Constitution doesn't specify who has the right to vote. As a result, in early days of the Union only white men who owned property could take part in the elections. The African Americans weren't considered as citizens, and women were also excluded from voting. Native Americans couldn't vote up until 1924.

Out of forty-two delegates who were present at the Convention, thirty-nine signed the Constitution. Edmund Randolph and George Mason from Virginia, as well as Elbridge Gerry from Massachusetts, refused to sign the document partly because it didn’t have the bill of rights.

When it was time to ratify the Constitution by the states, the absence of the bill of rights became the main stumbling block.

“I Smell a Rat!” These immortal words were uttered by Christian Statesman Patrick Henry when he refused his invitation to attend the US Constitutional Convention in 1787.

8. Prove that the Emancipation Proclamation was a statement of great importance in the US history and changed the purpose of the Civil War.

By the summer of 1862 President Lincoln realized that the North would only win the Civil War if he could arouse more enthusiasm for its cause. In September, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation with this aim. The Emancipation Proclamation declared that from January 1, 1863, all slaves were to be made free – but only if they lived in areas that were part of the Confederacy. The Emancipation Proclamation changed the purpose of the war. From the struggle to preserve the Union, it became the struggle both to preserve the Union and to abolish slavery.
9. Discuss the main demands of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. Give examples of the improvements brought by the Civil Rights movement in modern American life.

The 14th Amendment was of great importance because it was the foundation of the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The black struggle for equal treatment became known as the Civil Rights movement. Only in 1954 the racial segregation was abandoned and it marked the beginning of the campaign to put an end to all forms of legally enforced segregation in American life.

The climax of the Civil Rights movement came in 1963. On a hot August day 200,000 people, black and white, took part in a mass demonstration in Washington to demand full racial equality. In a moving and dramatic speech, Martin Luther King told millions of Americans watching their televisions all over the country: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out these truths that all men are created equal. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveholders will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood”.
10. Comment on the event of September 11th. What is its influence in modern American life?

The September 11 attacks (often referred to as September 11th or 9/11) were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by Al-Qaeda upon the United States on September 11, 2001. The idea for the September 11 plot came from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who first presented the idea to Osama bin Laden in 1996. At that point, Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda were in a period of transition, having just relocated back to Afghanistan from Sudan. In December 1998, the Director of Central Intelligence Counterterrorist Center reported to the
