BLING COMES TO MOSCOW MALL AS J LO BREEZES IN

Once a capital city of grim department stores and long food queues,
Moscow is hitting the retail big time as it prepares for the arrival of a curvy
starlet with a penchant for expensive designer clothes, pink diamonds and fiancés.

The allure of Moscow’s new money has persuaded Jennifer Lopez to (A31) her first boutique store in the city. The J. Lo by Jennifer Lopez store will open in an exclusive ‘millionaires’ mall on 31 May when the singer flies in to publicise the (A32) extension of her global brand, aimed at the capital's richest 12- to 25-year-old girls.

The Moscow shop is the first of her new ‘boutique’ stores to open, and will try to create an ‘interactive’ shopping (A33), using plasma screen TVs constantly displaying Lopez’s image, huge sofas, and music booths playing her records.

It has been seen as a bid to cash in on the desires of ‘Novi Ruskis’ – the derogatory term for the handful of Russians grown extraordinarily (A34) from the nascent free market – in a city where a hundred thousand people are homeless. A press release for the fashion show that will (A35) open the store reads: ‘Moscow for Jennifer represents the ultimate in beauty, luxury and culture.’

There were, however, fears last week that Lopez might (A36) her visit over security concerns. Her handlers were reportedly put off by the high number of suicide bombings, blamed on Chechen extremists, that have recently blighted the Russian capital.

Tatyana Stoliarskaya, spokeswoman for Crocus City Mall, where the store will open, said it was not yet (A37) if Lopez would make it to Moscow. She added that the 300 square metre store will contain a (A38) of J. Lo by Jennifer Lopez products, from clothes, to jeans, belts, jewellery and sunglasses. ‘We are launching a new lingerie line that is extremely beautiful,’ she said. ‘There will be a swing chair and girls are expected to come with their friends to have a good time.’
A31.

1) open 2) found 3) create 4) visit

A35.

1) officially 2) really 3) remarkably 4) impressively

A36.

1) slow 2) deny 3) rethink 4) cancel

WATER FAERIES”

“Water faeries party everyday!” the little blonde pixie said with a wink. “Who do you think spreads joy and happiness all over the world? ”

Ralf looked at the faerie with a blank expression on his face. He had been strolling by himself near the stream when he stumbled upon them. At first, he had squatted behind a bush to get a better peek, but soon one of the little sprites saw him and immediately flew over to chat.

“Wow... You're so beautiful!” he said aloud.

“Thank you.”

Ralf had asked what kind of creatures they were, and was informed that they were a traveling pack of water faeries on their way to help save the rain forest in South America. They had only stopped because they heard the bubbling brook in Ralf ’s back yard. “It sounds so much like home, we couldn't resist.” The faerie continued. “Want to join us?”

The little faerie took Ralf ’s pinky finger and led him towards the group. At once, the other faeries grew excited to see such a curious young boy. They fluttered towards him, laughing and giggling and spreading faerie dust through the air.

Ralf couldn't help but smile with them. He had never seen anything like it.

“Hello, faeries.” He said to them and waved.

“Hi, Ralf.” some of them replied.

Ralf couldn't tell exactly how many there were, but he guessed there must be a lot! They all smiled and fluttered about. Some were floating in the air, some were splashing in the water, some were sitting on tree leaves, and some were even skipping through the dirt and the grass. They waved and said hello as they passed by.

“Am I the only one who can see you?” Ralf asked.

“Oh, no,” answered a squeaky little pixie with dark hair and gleaming red eyes. “We can be seen by anyone who happens to find us.”

“Yes!” a fair-haired faerie piped up. “We love to be seen, although we are so tiny and magical that we are easily overlooked.”

“We’re quite fast, too.” A beautiful faerie with red hair pointed out. “Sometimes we’re too fast for the human eye to notice, but you have wonderful eyes, Ralf. You can see us just fine.” The faerie tucked her head into her shoulder as she spoke.

“Amazing...” Ralf trailed off. He suddenly felt all tickly in his stomach and thought he might be floating in the air with them. He didn't dare to blink for fear they might all suddenly disappear.

“How long can you stay?” he asked in a dreamy fashion.

“Until we leave.” Came the reply from many faeries at once and then they giggled. Ralf started giggling too. As he giggled, he made the mistake of closing his eyes. Of course, when he opened them the faeries were all gone! The only thing left was the sparkling reflection of the sunlight on top of the water.

Even though Ralf ’s first experience with the faeries didn't last very long, he had a hunch that one day he would meet the magical faeries again.

Текст № 2

EXAM FEARS DRIVING TEENAGERS TO PROZAC

The number of teenagers relying on drugs such as Prozac to see them through GCSEs and A-levels has soared, with prescriptions reaching 140,000 in less than a decade.

The figures have alarmed experts so much they have demanded an urgent investigation to explain why so many pupils are prescribed drugs instead of being offered counselling or therapy.

The revelation coincides with fresh allegations that drug companies have been exaggerating the benefits of anti-depressants for teenagers. Mental health charities claim they may cause more harm than good.

The statistics – from the government's drugs watchdog, the MHRA – also highlight the pressure being put on students by the exams system. They show that, in 1995, 46,000 anti-depressants prescriptions were given to teenagers between 16 and 18 in full-time education. By last year this had risen to 140,000, more than treble the amount.

There has also been a rise of almost 50 per cent in the amount of so-called ‘happy drugs’ – such as Prozac and Seroxat – dispensed to youngsters under 16 Since 1996, the figure has risen from 76,000 prescriptions to 110,000, although the total could be higher because prescriptions from private doctors and those given to hospital patients are not included.

Using the new data, David Healy, director of the University of Wales department of psychological medicine, calculated that as many as 100,000 under-18s have been given drugs, three times the number government advisers have admitted. ‘We are talking about people who have committed suicide who didn’t need to,’ Healy said.

The Department of Health admitted last night it had no idea how many children were taking psychiatric drugs. In the past year ministers have banned the
majority of anti-depressants for under 18s, with the notable exception of Prozac.

Thousands of children have been prescribed Seroxat in Britain and, even though a number have committed suicide while using the drug, the Seroxat Users’ Group claims it is still being prescribed to youngsters.

The drug's maker, GlaxoSmithKline, is facing charges in the US that it suppressed information that Seroxat can cause suicidal behaviour among teenagers. It denies the accusations.

This summer’s GCSE candidates will be sitting their fourth set of national tests in nine years at a time when pressure to succeed has never been greater. David Cotterill, professor of child and adolescent mental health at the University of Leeds, says: ‘My impression is that there are a lot more exams in the system. These days the system is more public and there is a pressure to perform that there didn't use to be.’

1) the popularity of anti-depressants

2) the difficulty of full-time education

А48. David Healy found that the number of under 18s given drugs

1) is bigger than authorities admit

2) influences the number of suicides

3) is not growing

4) is not sufficient to prevent suicides
A49. How did the Department of Health policy change in the past year?
