  1. Начало урока: (организационный момент, постановка учащимися темы урока)

T: Hello, my dear friends. I am very glad to see your happy faces. Dasha, are you in a good mood today? And what about you, Polina? And you, Mike? What or maybe who can make you be in a good mood?

P1: When the weather is fine, I feel good. The weather makes me feel good.

P2: My family and my friends cheer me up.

P3: I am in a good mood when I get to school in time without traffic jam.

P4: When I listen to music, I am in a good mood.

T: So I see. Music can buck you up. Let’s listen to a song and find out the topic of our lesson today. (Учитель включает первый куплет песни и припев, дети слушают)

T: So, what is the topic of our lesson today?

Children: money.

T: Right you are. Today, you will learn about the history of money, value of money, American and British money. You’ll learn to read and listen to the text and react on it. You’ll ask and answer the questions. You will express your opinion.

  1. Основная часть урока с применением метода малых групп, метода межпредметных связей:

T: Speaking about money, I would like you to learn a new vocabulary on the topic. Firstly, remember, please that in English the word “MONEY” is only used in singular, never in plural. E.g: Money is important.

What verbs can be used with the word “money”? (на доске учитель вывешивает слово “MONEY”, дети подбирают глаголы )

P1: to earn money

P2: to spend money

P3: to exchange money

P4: to save money

T: to borrow money, to invest money etc. What kinds of money do you know?

P1: coins

P2: paper money

T: It’s a sort of money which is known as cash (наличные денежные средства). There is another kind of money which includes checks, credit cards and travelers’ checks.

T: We use money every day to pay for things we buy, but do you know where money came from? Let’s find it out. I’ll give you the text about money history. You’ll have 5 minutes to read the text and to make few questions. Then work in groups, translate from English into Russian the most difficult sentences for you to understand, ask the questions to each other and find out the best question of your group and find out the spokesperson. (дети читают предложенный текст и составляют вопросы, затем в группах выбирают лучшие вопросы).

The text.

Thousands of years ago money was not used. Instead, man had the “barter” system. This meant that if a man wanted something he didn’t have, he had to find someone who had it. Then he had to offer him something in exchange. And if that man did not like what he was offered in exchange, the first man couldn’t get what he needed.

In time, certain things came to be used as money, because practically everyone would take these things in exchange. In the past, people used shells, beads (бусинки), cocoa beans, salt, grain (зерно), tobacco, skins (шкуры) and even cattle (крупно-рогатый скот). But coins are much easier to use than, say, cattle. They are easy to store and to carry about.

Coins were first used in China. They were also used by ancient Greeks as early as 600 BC. They were first made of either gold or silver. They were stamped with the mark of the government. The stamp also showed how much each coin was worth.

Later, people began to use coins made of cheaper metals. The metal itself had no value, but the coins were still worth the amount stamped on them. People also started to use paper money. It no longer mattered that the money itself had no real value. It was backed (финансировались) by the government and banks. This is the kind of money we use today. Today, of course, we have bills and coins issued by the government, and everybody uses this money.

T: Are you ready to start? At first, let’s answer my questions and then yours:

  1. What system did people have before using money?

  2. Why did money appear?

  3. What things were used as money equivalents?

  4. Where were coins first used?

  5. Why did people stop making coins of silver and gold?

  6. Why do you think paper money appeared?

Teacher: Thank you very much for questions and answers. The name of money is different in different countries. Let’s see how well you know it. I name the country, you name currency (by the way, currency - валюта).

The Ukraine – grivna

China – yuan [juː'ɑːn]

India - rupiah [ruː'piːə]

The USA – dollar

The UK – pound

Germany – euro

Russia – rouble

T: Well-done! It’s time to learn about American and British money in detail. Open your books, please, ex. 29, page 106. Listen, read and remember. ( у каждого ребенка есть распечатка с британскими и американскими деньгами) We all know our Russian money very well. Let’s look at the copy of British money. So, they have one penny, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence, 1 pound (a hundred pence), 2 pounds, 5 pounds, 10 pounds, 20 pounds and 50 pounds. Look at the copy of American money, please. So, they have 1 cent (they call it a penny), 5 cents (a nickel), 10 cents (a dime), 25 cents (a quarter), 50 cents (half a dollar) and 1 dollar (100 cents), 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 dollars. Is everything clear? If yes, let’s see how good you are at Maths. You have the cards on your table. Do the problems, please. (дети читают математические задачи и решают их)

  1. Andy had $1.20. Andy’s mother gave him 75c. How much did he have then?

  2. Ann has $1.00. She wants to buy a hair ribbon that costs 74c. How much change should she get?

  3. Helen had 20 pounds, her brother asked her to give him 5 pounds. She bought a nice doll for 3 pounds and 55c. How much money is left?

  4. Tom wants to buy a poster. It costs 65c. He took 3 quarters out of his pocket. Are 3 quarters enough to pay for the posters?

  5. Bob wanted to use his dime, nickel and 2 pennies on the chewing gum. A stick of gum costs 12cents. Which of the four coins will be left over?

  6. Jane took a nickel, 2 dimes and 1 quarter. How much are they worth?

  7. Peter has 1 pound and 20 cents. His sister gave him 5 pounds and 50 cents. How much does he have?

T: You are good not only at English, but at Maths too.

T: Let’s turn back to the song , listen to it again and complete the missing words.

Money, money, money

I work all night, I work all day,
to pay the bills
I have to …
Ain't it sad
And still there never seems to be
a single penny left for ….
That's too bad
In my dreams I have a plan
If I got me a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work at all,
I'd fool around and have a ….

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world
Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world
It's a rich man's world

A man like that is hard to find
but I can't get him off mу …
Ain't it sad
And if he happens to be free
I bet he wouldn't fancy …
That's too bad
So I must leave,
I'll have to go
To Las Vegas or ….
And win a fortune in a game,
my life will never be the….....

They all rhyme with the word at the end of the previous line. Before it, look at the glossary, please. (дети слушают песню и вставляют пропущенные слова).

T: Now, lets check. (проверяют пропущенные слова). Did you understand the song?

P1: Yes, I did. I think the singer is poor, she works very hard but she doesn’t have enough money. She wants to have a lot of money and she is ready for almost everything to get it.

T: It means that money plays an important role in our life, doesn’t it? I want you to think about it. Work in small groups again. Discuss this issue. I will give you few minutes. Take red and green paper and write down your thoughts: write about negative influence of money on a person on the red paper and positive on the green.

So, it’s time for you to express your opinions. Let’s make a chart on the blackboard and put your green and red paper on the topic and listen to your opinions. Who wants to start?

P1/P2/P3

  1. Заключительный этап урока:

T: You are absolutely right that money is important. We need it in everyday’s life: clothes, food, education, travelling, relaxation and so on. But we mustn’t forget that money is not everything in our life. There are many negative aspects of money as well. As the proverb says: “Health is better than wealth.” We can’t buy our health, we need to keep fit. We discussed it at our previous lesson and we are going to work on it during the next few lessons.

I want to say “thank you” to you, my friends. It was a pleasure for me to work with you. Take a small sheet of paper and write down how you have worked at the lesson: excellent, good, not bad etc. and show them to me. Write down your homework, please: ex. 9, p.120, to learn new words. I’ll give “fives” “fours” to…… The lesson is over. Good-bye.
