Victorian attitudes about how children should be brought up have largely disappeared and for many children family life has become more relaxed and less strict. The Queen Mother

… My parents often get annoyed with me because I spend a lot of time going shopping. There are many supermarkets in the centre of the city and I like to go through all of them. And what about you? Speaker 1

Charles I (1600 – 1649) was not born to be king and did not expect to rule. He only inherited the crown following the death of his elder brother, Henry, in 1612. A slight man of diminutive stature, he had a slight stammer, reflecting his shyness and lack of self-confidence. He was an intelligent man and a great patron of the arts. He carried a dignified air, far removed from the terrible personal manners of his father, James I.
Speaker 2

George VI (1895 – 1952) assumed this name on his coronation. He was the monarch not groomed for kingship. He was an intensely shy man, nervous in public, and suffered from an acute stammer. Once he confessed to his cousin that he was not ready to become king of England. Nevertheless, George proved himself more than equal to the task, especially during the years of the Second World War. He refused to leave England even after Buckingham Palace was bombed in 1940.

Edward VII (1841 – 1910 was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His relationship with his parents, especially his mother, was often strained. Even though he took over many of her administrative duties as Prince of Wales, his mother did not entirely trust him. She often excluded him from any real involvement in governmental matters. He lived life to the full, which earned him both popularity and derision. He was married to Princess Alexandra, of Denmark.

George III (1738 – 1760) was the first of the Hanoverian monarchs to be born in England. He succeeded to the throne in 1760 on the death of his grandfather, George II. He took an immediate interest in affairs of state. He regarded himself as English and the people warmed to his simple, direct manner. His long reign spanned almost the entire period now termed the 'Industrial Revolution' and saw many changes. But he is perhaps best remembered for the loss of the American colonies in 1783.

James II (1633 – 1701) was a proud, haughty man, who believed strongly in the doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings. He was the second son of Charles I. He spent much of his early life in government office and was made Lord High Admiral, serving in the Dutch wars. He aroused considerable opposition from Parliament because of his strong Catholic views. Although tall, handsome and by all accounts well-mannered, he never won the popular support of his people.

Henry VIII (1491 – 1547) came to the throne at the age of 17. He was an extravagant person who had not been groomed for kingship. He only came to the throne because of the premature death of his elder brother Arthur, in 1502. He was very much liked at first. But in later years, he became a tyrant, particularly if he did not get his own way. He is best remembered for breaking with the Church of Rome, establishing the Church of England and for marrying six times.

William: You know, Ann, I'm not much of an art lover. I seldom go to art galleries. But I always find myself talking about sports, cars or politics.

Ann: Some people here do keep up with everything. They see – the latest Broadway productions and read new writers and poets.

William: You know, our pastimes are much less intellectual than you are used to. The problem is that in the American lifestyle other values come first. Ours is a country of fast cars, hamburgers and instant coffee. And a boss who is always saying, “it should have been done yesterday”.

Ann: Your heroes are usually rich businessman, gangsters and movie stars.

William: Yes, we are told from childhood by our parents, teachers and books that we must become rich and, if possible, famous.

Ann: Marilyn Monroe is a perfect example of this, isn’t she?

William: She had all that most of us dream of – beauty, fame, and wealth – and then, as the story goes, she went and killed herself. There is a lot of stress here, and peer pressure too. Since early age we have been competing in school, and at work, climbing the social ladder.

Ann: Americans don’t like to depend on others. And I know how highly they think of self-made men, those who have achieved everything on their own.

William: Yes, it is freedom, independence and competition that are traditional American values. And, of course, you must work hard.

Ann: The competition for a better life in America never ends.
