6. He was the top student in the language class. Interviewer: We are speaking to the leader of a Russian group called Western-S. Morning, Sergey. Your group is quite popular in Omsk, as far as I know, and you had several successful tours round the USA. It’s high time the British audience learnt about you. It’s a bit weird that you sing only in English being a Russian group- I wonder why… Can you possibly start from early days… How did it all start? Sergey: You know it started long ago… My passion for English and music began simultaneously. The reason for both was the Beatles. Their influence on my life was so big that I became their fan in everything- music, language, looks, behavior. Of course, I wanted to understand what they sang… Interviewer: They sang about… Sergey: Yeah… and how they played guitars. Interviewer: No wonder! So…what did you do? Sergey: So I asked my parents to buy me a guitar, but actually it was my aunt who bought me my first guitar. It was very primitive but it had 6 strings and sounded like a guitar. Interviewer: How old were you then, I wonder? Sergey: I was around 14 then. I shared my passion for the Beatles and the guitar with the boy living next door. He had a guitar about the same quality. We often dreamed about being in a band and playing the Beatles songs. Interviewer: I guess, you started doing that… Sergey: Yeah, no wonder I started to imitate my idols’ singing, learning their songs by heart and playing my guitar by ear. Interviewer: Sounds like a hard work… Did you get any musical education or any help from professional musicians? Sergey: No, not really, I mean that no music school could give me that kind of practice. I had only basic understanding of musical notation (and still have, to be honest) but it was enough to learn the basic chords and play accompaniment. Interviewer: And your English, Sergey, what about your English? Did you study it at school? Sergey: You know, learning English lyrics was a great practice in actual studying at school. As a result I was the best student in my English class. |
