The theme of the lesson is ‘The Animals of The Arctic Circle’
So, we are going to learn more about the Arctic animals. You will listen to a text,
read a story and have a talk about some of these animals.
T: Let’s start with phonetic exercises.
What are these letters? m, n, s, ch, sh
What are these sounds? [n], [m], [s], [∫], [t∫]
Let’s match these letters with their sounds (How do we read the letter ‘m’? and etc.)
Let’s read some words:
[m] moose, ermine, many, much
[∫] (is) noshing, mush
[t∫] much, chipmunk
There is a tongue-twister for you. Try to read it as quickly as you can
Moose is noshing much mush.
What does it mean? What animal is mentioned in the tongue-twister? Is it an Arctic animal?
T: To understand the texts about other Arctic animals better, you should know some English words. Let’s work in groups. There are cards with the words about ‘Animals’ on your desks. 1) The first group should find out the names of the Arctic animals. 2) The second group should find out the parts of the animals’ bodies. 3) I’d like you to find out the types (kinds) of animals, please.

Polar bears are mammals and feed their babies on milk.
They live in the Arctic areas of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia.
They are about two metres tall and they weigh about 400 kilos. Polar bears have a small head, powerful jaws, a black nose and a tongue. They have got 42 teeth, their tail is small. Polar bears have cream-coloured fur which keeps them very warm. They can swim very well because their front legs are very strong.
They eat seals and fish, but they don’t drink water.
They don’t live in big groups like many other mammals. They live for about twenty-five years.
