The School Party

English for Pleasure”

11 steps
Teacher: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! Glad to see you at our school party! I hope, today we’ll have a good time, because three teams of our graduates will show us their knowledge of English language, intelligence, talents and skills. Let’s have a look at them. We all greet the team of 11th A (B, V).
And of course I must introduce you our strict and fair jury.
JURY: -
Teacher: Today we shall go up your school English stairs step by step. You’ll have to read, write, speak English, recite English poems and sing English songs. OK, time is money, that’s why let’s start! Let’s have “ENGLISH FOR PLEASURE”!

SONG
Teacher: And our first step is “Here We Are”. Let’s listen to our teams. What are they?
STEP 1 “HERE WE ARE”

We’d like to tell you about our class,

Now, everybody, please listen to us.

Here we are and now you see

Students from grade eleventh V.

We are energetic, we always move.

We are very clever, today we’ll prove it.

We like to study, we like to work.,

We like to play games and we like to talk.

We are good actors, we dance and sing,

We are creative and can do everything.

We are good friends, we are a team,

We want to win, it’s our dream.

We live in Mordovo, study in Oborona.

Here we are and now you see

Students from grade eleventh B.

We are able to:

  • study well,

  • work to tight deadlines,

  • work in a team,

  • cope with stress,

  • make decisions,

  • solve problems,

  • and support each other.

We differ from the rest

Because we are the best.

Teacher: My dear friends, do you remember your first English lessons? What did you do? Now look at the screen. You’ll see different pictures. Your task is to remember their names.
STEP 2. “DO YOU REMEMBER THEIR NAMES?”

Teacher: Well-done! Thank you very much. Let’s go on our moving up the stairs. Step 2. Do you remember the English Alphabet? You are to look at the table and find these words in it. You may look diagonally, horizontally, vertically.
STEP 3. “DO YOU REMEMBER THE ENGLISH ALPHABET?”
Teacher: Everyone knows and loves proverbs. And what about you? Let’s try. A bird may be known by its song.
STEP 4. DO YOU KNOW ENGLISH AND RUSSIAN PROVERBS?

Teacher: My dear friends, tell me, please, do you like poems? Do you know any poems? Take these sheets of paper. You will listen to Russian ones and find and read their English equivalents.
STEP 5. CAN YOU FIND ENGLISH EQUIVALENTS
TO THESE RUSSIAN POEMS ?

Listen, understand, find the English equivalent and read it.

4 As Tommy Snooks and Bessy Brooks

Were walking out the Sunday,

Says Tommy Snooks to Bessy Brooks

Tomorrow will be Monday

  1. Brave news is come to town,

Brave news is carried,

Brave news is come to town! –

Jemmy Dawson’s married.

First he got a porridge pot,

Then he bought a ladle,

Then he got a wife and child,

And then he bought a cradle.

  1. Mirror, mirror, tell me

Am I pretty or plain?

Or am I downright ugly

And ugly to remain?

Shall I marry a gentleman?

Shall I marry a clown?

Or shall I marry old Knives-and-Scissors

Shouting through the town?

Стережет в горах овец;

1

Sleep, baby, sleep,

Thy father guards the sheep$

Thy mother shakes the dreamland tree

And from it, fall sweet, dreams for thee,

Sleep, baby, sleep.

6

Social mechanism

When people always try to take

The very smallest piece of cake

How cant it also always be

That that’s the one that’s left for me.

8

Enough is enough

The powerful and wise must steer

Our destinies from year to year

To keep things going hour by hour

Is all that is within my power.

5

Form and Content

Most design is sheer disaster

Hiding what one doesn’t master.

7

If you know what I mean

A poet should be of the

Old-fashioned meaningless brand:

Obscure, esoteric, symbolic, -

The critics demand it;

So if there’s a poem of mine

That you do understand

I’ll gladly explain what it means

Till you don’t understand it.

A boy: Excuse me, is this the right bus for the central square?
A girl: Oh, no. this bus is going in the opposite direction. You’ll have to take a 15.
A boy: Can you tell me where to get off?
A girl: Certainly. I can tell you the way, because I live near the central square.
A boy: Is it far to walk from here?
A girl: Oh, no. It is no distance at all. I usually go there on foot, but it’s raining now and I have no umbrella.
A boy: I have. Can I offer it to you?
A girl: Thank you very much. You are very kind.
A boy: I’m ………

TOM GETS ACQUAINTED WITH BECKY
Persons:

  • Mr. Dobbins, a teacher

  • Becky Thatcher

  • Tom Sawyer

  • Tom’s classmates

Place: a classroom
(Mr Dobbins conducts a lesson. The pupils sit at their desks. The only vacant place is on the girls’ side of the classroom. A knock on the door is heard. The door opens and Tom Sawyer comes in.)
Mr Dobbins: Thomas Sawyer!
Tom: Sir!
Mr Dobbins: Come up here. Now, sir, why are you late again, as usual?
Tom: I stopped to talk with Huckleberry Finn!
(the teacher is shocked and stares at Tom helplelssly.)
Mr Dobbins: You – you did what?
Tom: Stopped to talk with Huckleberry Finn.
Mr Dobbins: Thomas Sawyer, this is the most astounding confession I have ever listened to. Take off your jacket. (the teacher gives him a hard whipping.) Now, sir, go and sit with the girls! And let this be a warning to you.

(Tom sits down on the end of the bench and the girl turns away from him. Tom puts a peach in front of her but she throws it away. Tom begins to draw hiding hid work with his left hand. She tries to see the picture.)

Becky: (in wisper) Let me see it. I like this house. It’s nice – make a man.
Tom: I’ll try. (Draws and gives the picture to the girl).

Becky: It’s a beautiful man – now make me coming along.
(Tom continues to draw. Then he gives the picture to the girl).
Tom: Do you like it?
Becky: It’s ever so nice – I wish I could draw.
Tom: It’s easy. I’ll teach you.
Becky: Oh, will you? When?
Tom: Good. What’s your name?
Becky: Becky Thatcher. What’s yours? Oh, I know. It’s Thomas Sawyer.
Tom: Yes, that’s the name they call me by when they punish me. I’m Tom when I’m good. You call me Tom, will you?
Becky: Yes.
(now Tom begins to write something hiding the words from the girl. But this time she begs to see.)

Becky: Tom, let me see what you have written.
Tom: Oh, it is not anything.
Becky: Yes, it is.
Tom: No, it isn’t. You don’t want to see.
Becky: Yes, I do, indeed I do. Please let me.
Tom: You’ll tell.
Becky: No, I won’t ever tell anybody. Now let me.
Tom: Oh, you don’t want to see!
Becky: Now that you treat me so, I will see.
(she puts her hand upon his, then Tom lets his hand slip by degrees till these words are seen: “ I LOVE YOU”)
Tom (reads): I love you!
Becky: Oh, you bad thing!

( She hits his hand, but she looks pleased, nevertheless.)

Meeting and Passing
(by Robert Frost)
As I went down the hill along the wall

There was a gate I had leaned at for the view

And had just turned from when I first saw you

As you came up the hill. We met. But all

We did that day was mingle great and small

Footprints in summer dust as if we drew

The figure of our being less than two

But more than one as yet. Your parasol

Pointed the decimal off with one deep thrust.

And all the time we talked you seemed to see

Something down there to smile at in the dust.

Something down there to smile at in the dust.

(Oh, it was without prejudice to me!)

Afterward I went past what you had passed

Before we met and you what I had passed.

A POEM BY ROBERT BURNS.
O, my Love’s like a red, red rose

That’s newly sprung in June.

O my Love’s like the melody

That’s sweetly played in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonny lass,

So deep in love am I.

And I will love thee still, my dear,

Till all seas gang dry.
Till all the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt with the sun.

I will love thee still my dear,

While the sands of life shall run.
And fare thee well, my only Love!

And fare thee well a while!

And I will come again, my Love,

Though it were ten thousand mile.
