The community gave them money so that their lives would not be difficult. They were seen as heroes when they won a competition. The ancient games continued until 394AD. Now we are ready to start. Speaker 1 Most businesses in the United States have conference rooms which are used for many kinds of meetings. In the company I work for there is only one conference room for several departments. So, employees have to sign up ahead of time for a specific time period. I’m responsible for that in the production department. I’m usually assigned to post a sign-up sheet on the conference room door or wall. The room also has to be set up. This involves cleaning it, making sure there are enough chairs, and stocking the room with any supplies that will be necessary for a meeting. Speaker 2 Conference rooms frequently have a large rectangular table in the middle of the room. I’m usually in charge of the meeting and I sit in a chair at the narrow end of the table or in the middle of one of the longer sides. The employees usually sit where they want, facing the person in charge, although, in some companies, higher-level workers might sit closer to the boss. These days in many companies, rectangular tables in conference rooms have been replaced by round ones in order to create a feeling of equality among the employees. Speaker 3 Our lives are full of conflicts which occur at work, at school, and at home. Serious conflicts sometimes require the intervention of another person who isn’t involved in a situation, can study the problem objectively and resolve it. Some people are paid to work as mediators whose primary aim is to resolve serious disagreements. This is what I do. It is a demanding job requiring someone who is a good listener as well as a diplomat. My work consists in finding a compromise solution that could suit everybody. This usually requires many hours of hard work. Speaker 4 Mediators are frequently used to resolve disputes between labor unions and companies. These disputes usually involve disagreements about wages, working hours, and benefits. Many professional athletes also use mediators when they negotiate their contracts. Recently, mediators have been working with couples who are getting divorced. Some couples feel that mediators are more effective than lawyers in resolving their conflicts. Speaker 5 In most people’s lives turning points occur when they have to make important decisions which are able to bring about radical changes. But often turning points result from unexpected circumstances. One example of a turning point is moving to a new city or town. That’s what I had to do several years ago. When people decide to live in another place, they may leave behind close friends and family. Usually they have few people to rely on in their new life. Most people go through a period of adjustment before they make new friends and take up new activities. Speaker 6 Almost everyone can think of a turning point in his or her life. An illness or an accident sometimes helps people become stronger and more optimistic than they used to be. When young people break up with a girlfriend or boyfriend, they often develop closer relationships with other friends. When teachers believe in their students, that encouragement can help students change their minds about future plans. I’m very grateful to my teacher of mathematics who was sure I would become a celebrated scientist. So I am. You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.) Now we are ready to start. Emma: John, you seem to eat a lot of breakfast in America. What’s the reason for that? John: You know, Emma, the early history of America is known to have been the time of small farmers. You needed a big breakfast before the long hard working day ahead. It usually consisted of bacon and eggs, pancakes and potatoes as well as toast or rolls. Emma: But you don’t need to go out and work in the field any more. And you still tend to eat a substantial breakfast in the morning. Why so? John: Yes, you are right. Our life has become less active, and we don’t eat quite as much. Some of us only manage to gulp down some coffee and a roll. But on Sunday, when we don’t have to hurry we are used to eating breakfast later like in the old days, and most of us will prefer a hearty meal. Emma: I’ve heard that maple syrup is what Americans eat with pancakes for breakfast. Is that really so? John: That’s right. By the way, bread made from corn was a traditional food of the Indians. In the past they would give corn cakes called hush puppies to their hungry dogs to make them silent. Nowadays, some people also prefer to have bread made from corn. They are sure it is good for health. Emma: Is it true that when it’s lunchtime most people go to a café or eat the lunch they have brought with them from home? John: Yes, it’s true. Such food is usually packed in a brown bag, so you call these people brown-baggers. Frankly speaking, I’m one of them, too. I always prefer something homemade to fast-food restaurants or snack bars. Emma: Another thing that seems very strange to me is eating a big dinner well after 7 p.m. Going to bed after such a substantial meal is no good at all, don’t you think? You are likely to get fat very soon. John: Yes, right you are! Probably that is why we have thousands of overweight people. Another reason is going to fast-food restaurants for lunch after which you always want to have a good meal at home. People who worry about health and fitness would rather buy organic vegetables and healthy food. But unfortunately, they are not numerous. You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.) Now you’ll hear the text again. (Repeat.) This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 15 seconds.) . Задания А8–А14
