Aim: to get new information about Robert Burns and his poetry.

Teachers: Today we’ll speak about one of the greatest poets of Scotland – Robert Burns, recite his poems. What do you know about this poet? Now, listen to th information about his life and get ready to answer m questions.

On the 25th of January, 1759, a son was born to William Burness. He was called Robert. His father William was a gardener on a small estate; he could understand people, their manners very well. And Robert learned from his father to understand people. Robert’s mother knew many old songs and ballads of the country-side. In the evenings she told the children folk-tales. The family was poor, but the father wanted to give the children the best education. When the children were young, he began to teach them to read and write.

When Robert was six, he and his brother Gilbert went to school. But a few months later the school was closed. But father and some people engaged another teacher. His name was John Murdoch. He was 18, but very clever. The teacher lived with each family in turn and taught the children. Robert interested him more than his other pupils. Soon Robert’s father decided to try his hand at farming and the family went to the Mount Oliphant farm. The teacher went to this farm too and stayed there for two years more.

When Robert was 13, he had to work hard on the farm. He died at the age of 37, in 1796. He is considered to be the national poet of Scotland, and the date of his birth, the 25th of January is always celebrated.

Robert began to write when he was 15. When his first book of poems was published he changed his name from Burness to Burns. He wrote poems in the dialect of his country. In his songs he showed his dislike for the rich, sympathy for the poor and made fun of the church.

Burns traveled much throughout Scotland collecting folktales and ballads. But he did not take money for his work. He did this for the love of his country and his people.
Now answer the questions, please:

  1. When was Robert Burns born?

  2. What was his father?

  3. When did Robert go to school?

  4. When did he begin writing his poems?

  5. What did Burns write is poems about?

  6. How old was Burns when he died?

Now, let’s listen to some of his poems. (the students read the poems)

My Heart’s in the Highlands.

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;

A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe –

My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,

The birthplace of valour, the country of worth;

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,

The Hills of the Highlands forever I love.

Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow;

Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;

Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;

Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;

A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe –

My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.

A Red, Red Rose.

O my love is like a red, red rose,

That’s newly sprung in June,

O, my love is like the melody

That’s sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, by bony lass,

So deep in love am I:

And I will love thee still, my dear,

Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,

Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,

And I will love thee still, my dear,

Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,

And rocks welt wi’the sun!

And I will love thee still, my dear,

While sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee well, my only love,

And fare thee well a while!

And I will come again, my love,

Though it were ten thousand mile!

Tho’ ‘t were ten thousand mile, my love,

Tho’ ‘t were ten thousand mile!

And I will come again, my love,

Tho’ ‘t were ten thousand mile!

Teacher: this poem was put on music. Many of Burn’s poems were put on music. We’ll listen to a very famous song, which is called “Honest poverty” – “честная бедность”. The signer is Elena Uvarova.

(the students listen to the recoding)

И легкий смех, как всплеск морской;

Teacher: You all know the song “Auld Lang Syne”. In Britain this song in sung on the New Year’s Day. Let’s sing this song all together.

Auld Lang Syne.

1. Should auld acquaintance be forgot

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

And days of Lang syne?

Chorus:

For auld Lang syne, my dear,

For auld Lang syne,

We’ll take a cup of kindness yet

For auld Lang syne.

2. And here’s a hand, my trusty friend,

And give us a hand of thine,

We’ll take a cup of kindness yet

For auld Lang syne.

Chorus:

For auld Lang syne, my dear,

For auld Lang syne,

We’ll take a cup of kindness yet

For auld Lang syne.

Teacher: Besides poems Robert Burns wrote epigrams. We’ll read them in Russian.

(the students in turn read the epigrams)

  1. “To the portrait of a clergyman” – “К портрету духовного лица”

  1. “About the head of a fool” – “О черепе тупицы”.

  1. “About the origin of one person” – “О происхождении одной особы”.

  1. “To a girl who is short” – “Девушке маленького роста”.

  1. “On the grave of a mean man” – “Надпись на могиле скряги”.

  1. “The label on the coach of a famous lady” – “Ярлычок на кресту знатной дамы”.

Teacher: I’ll give you some epigrams in English, try to find the Russian variant.

  1. That there is falsehood in his books,

I must and will deny:

They say their Master is a knave,

And sure they do not lie.

(Answer: “To the portrait pf a clergyman”)

  1. Ask why God made the gem so small,

And why so huge the granite? –

Because God meant mankind should set

That higher value on it.

(Answer: “To a girl who is short”)

  1. In se’enteen hunder’n forty-nine,

The deil ga stuff to mak a swine (=devil got)

An’coost it in a corner; (=and cast)

But wilily he chang’d his plan,

An’ shap’d it somethinglike a man,

An’ ca’d it Andrew Turner. (=and called)

(Answer: “About the origin of one person”)

The students read the epigrams loudly and find the Russian variants.

Teacher: I hope you’ve enjoyed our party, you’ve known some poems of Burns and some facts about his life. I thank all the students who has taken part in today’s party.
