Reading Fill in the gaps (1-6) with the phrases (A-G).There is one phrase that you do not to use. Anyone For a McJob? A McJob? What on earth is that? Well, according to a recently-added dictionary entry, a McJob is a low-paying job that requires little skill and provides little opportunity for advancement. You dream of a job like this, right? A monotonous, tedious job 1. _____? No? Then, why are thousands of educated young people spending hours each day folding jumpers, grilling burgers, serving cappuccinos and unpacking boxes of books? Katie Underwood, a twenty-three-year-old university student, has had around twenty jobs just like this. She has worked night-shits, has been told she can’t have a break or a day off 2.______. Fast food adverts and movies may make us think that these jobs are held by pink-cheeked, trendy teens 3.______, but an actual fact, most people in these jobs are in their late teens and twenties. Like Katie, these youngsters are juggling these part-time jobs and university classes 4._____. So, how sorry for yourself should you feel if you have to take a McJob? Well, perhaps you’re actually one of the lucky ones! First of all, some well-known former McDonald’s workers include Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com and Carl Lewis, Olympic gold medalist, and according to a recent article, around 20 of the 50 top word-wide managers began by grilling burgers! Secondly, most young people who take these jobs have little or no previous work experience. Learning how to get to work on time, operate a machine, count change, serve customers politely, co-operate with fellow workers and accept orders from a boss are skills 5._____. So, a McJob might be boring, tiring and badly-paid, 6._____. Undoubtedly, it will also make you appreciate just how lucky you are when you finally get your dream job! Writing Personal letter. You have received a letter from your English pen-friend Melanie.
Write back to Melanie answering her questions. Write 100-140 words. Remember the rules of letter writing. Материалы для учителя Tapescripts You'll hear people talking in eight different situations. For Questions 1-8, choose the best answer, A, B or C. 1. My previous car was running really well – after all, I’d only had it for six months and bought it brand new. But this letter from the car manufactures was such a good deal, it was difficult to resist. The difference in price between what I would get for my old car, and what I would have to pay for a new model was so small – I’d have been silly not to accept. And I’d always wanted a silver car, although colour doesn’t really matter that much. 2. I only left the office for a short time. I popped into the canteen to get a coffee and was back at my desk within five minutes. It wasn’t until lunchtime when I went to pick up my bag that I realized it wasn’t where I always leave it. Someone had obviously stood on my chair and instead of putting the bag back under my desk had left it on a very high shelf where we keep the plants – needless to say my purse wasn’t in it and I had quite a lot of money in it, unfortunately. 3. A: Where were you? I waited ages outside the cinema. B: So did I! I couldn’t find you anywhere. A: That’s ridiculous. You said seven o’clock and I was there, especially early so we could have a drink before the film started. In the end I just went home. B: But we agreed on the late night showing at eleven, so that’s the one I went to – alone I might add! A: Oh, no, and it was the last night that film was on and I was so looking forward to it. 4. It’s interesting to look at the latest research into the importance of a baby’s first year. Some early findings suggest that by the end of the first year a child’s character has been formed for life. In fact some of the researchers claim that these tests show whether a baby will grow up to be a shy or a bold person. However, part of the problem surrounding this research is the fact that babies can’t speak for themselves and so the researchers rely on experiments which involve the baby’s parents and brothers or sisters – if there are any. I’m surprised they don’t bring in the grandparents as well! 5. A new health and fitness centre opens this week in the heart of the city, close to the local technical college. It’s been built on the site of an old department store and has been developed with money raised by local businesses. It’s hoped that the facilities which include a swimming pool and gym will enable office workers to make the most of their lunchtime break. It will open early and close late five days a week; there are no plans to stay open at weekends, which will disappoint the students who live close by. The centre manager feels that at weekends families and friends are the priority, not exercise. 6. A: So why are you going? B: No one particular reason, really. I’ve been fed up with the pressure for some time – but that’s true of many jobs these days – and although the money’s important it’s not everything. In fact, I shall miss my generous salary and the working conditions. A: So why not stay then? B: Well, if I don’t make a move now I might regret it in the future. It’s so comfortable and it’d be the easiest thing in the world to stay. But there has to be more to life, something more challenging. And who knows: I might find a job where I earn even more! 7. Well, I’ve no complaints really, just one or two little niggles. The weather, which had been quite cold, turned out to be just right that evening – warm and cloudless. The organizers had laid out the tables and chairs under the trees in the shade, to keep the food cool, I imagine. Incidentally, the food was much better than last year. Anyway, I don’t suppose anyone could’ve done much about the mosquitoes. And once it got dark and the candles were lit, along came the moths to join in the fun aw well! 8. I think this new hotel is brilliant. It’s right on the beach and provides everything you need. Obviously it’s pretty basic – no luxuries, no fancy furnishings. There are single and double rooms, all with their own bathrooms, TV and internet access. I know some people don’t like the idea of hidden cameras, but if you are coming back late at night, it’s really good to know there’s a system out there to make sure you’re safe. It gives the night porter a view of what’s going on and that for me is probably the best thing of all. Ключи LISTENING
