Reported speech means that someone's words (direct speech) are reported in the form of indirect speech. Sentences with reported speech are complex sentences with object subordinate clauses. Direct and reported speech give us a great opportunity to understand how the rules of the sequence of tenses work. For comparison, the examples below are given in pairs: the first sentence is in direct speech, and the second is the same sentence in reported speech. (Слайд 2) Т. Do you know the term “"sequence of tenses"? (Слайд 3). T. The term "sequence of tenses", i.e., the agreement of tenses, refers to the choice of the verb tense in the subordinate clause depending on the tense of the verb in the main clause. The rule of the sequence of tenses means that the tense in the subordinate clause is determined by the tense in the main clause and should agree with it both logically and grammatically. The term "sequence of tenses" is often translated into Russian as "the agreement of tenses". If the verb in the main clause is in the present or in the future, the sequence of tenses in reported speech shouldn't be a problem because the tense in the subordinate clause doesn't change. But note that the word order in the subordinate clause of the reported questions is that of a statement. The same as with other object clauses, when the verb in the main clause is used in the past tense (usually, the Simple Past of the verbs "say, tell, ask, answer"), the verb in the object subordinate clause in indirect speech should be also used in one of the past tenses. Generally speaking, the tenses in the object subordinate clause change in the following way: the Simple Present is changed to the Simple Past; the Present Progressive is changed to the Past Progressive; the Present Perfect is changed to the Past Perfect; the Present Perfect Progressive is changed to the Past Perfect Progressive; the Simple Past is changed to the Past Perfect; the Past Progressive is changed to the Past Perfect Progressive; the Past Perfect and Past Perfect Progressive remain unchanged; the Future tenses are changed to the Future in the Past (i.e., "will" is changed to "would"). (Слайд 4) Past Perfect is often used in Reported speech with the verbs said, told, asked, thought, explained, wondered. I said I had never been to India. Т. In addition, when you change sentences from direct speech to reported speech, it is often necessary to replace some pronouns in the subordinate clause. (Слайд 5). T. The adverbs of time and place that are usually replaced (Слайд 6).Т. Modal verbs are changed in this way. (Слайд 7). Т. (Упражнение на закрепление, работа в режиме Т-Рs) Report what John said. Use say tell, explain. (Слайд 8). Т. Note that the word order in the subordinate clause of the reported questions is that of a statement. The conjunctions "if, whether" are used in reported general questions, while reported special questions keep as conjunctions the interrogative words (what, who, when, where, why, how) that they had in direct speech. . (Слайд 9, 10). Т. (Упражнение на закрепление, работа в режиме Т-Рs) Report what John said. Use ask, wonder. (Слайд 11). Т. How many forms has Imperative mood?
