International etiquette

The British are happy to have a business lunch and discuss business matters with a drink during the meal; the Japanese prefer not to work while eating. Lunch is a time to relax and get to know one another, and they rarely drink at lunchtime.

The Germans like to talk business before dinner: the French like to eat first and talk afterwards. They have to be well fed and watered before they discuss anything.

Taking off your jacket and rolling up your sleeves is a sign of getting down to work in Britain and Holland, but in Germany people regard it as taking it easy.

American executives sometimes signal their feeling of ease and importance in their offices by putting their feet on the desk whilst on the telephone. In Japan, people would be shocked. Showing the soles of your feet is the height of bad manners. It is a social insult only exceeded by blowing your nose in public.

The Japanese have perhaps the strictest rules of social and business behaviour. Seniority is very important, and a younger man should never be sent to complete a business deal with an older Japanese man. The Japanese business card almost needs a rulebook of its own. You must exchange business cards immediately on meeting because it is essential to establish everyone's status and position.

When it is handed to a person in a superior position, it must be given and received with both hands, and you must take time to read it carefully, and not just put it in your pocket! Also a bow is a very important part of greeting someone. You should not expect Japanese to shake hands. Bowing the head is a mark of respect and the first bow of the day should be lower than when you meet there after.

The Americans sometimes find it difficult to accept the more formal Japanese manners. They prefer to be casual and more informal, as illustrated by the universal "Have a nice day!' American waiters have a one-word imperative 'Enjoy!' The British, of course, are cool and reserved. The great topic of conversation between strangers in Britain is the weather - unemotional and impersonal. In America, the main topic between strangers is the search to find a geographical link. *'Oh.really? You live in Ohio? I had an uncle who once worked there."

Business Ideas

If you think you want to start your own business you have to first eliminate any doubts you may have about yourself and your abilities. That means that you have to first identify your own strengths and decide if you're the type of person who can build a business and make it a success. Once you have determined that, then you need a good - no, make that a great - idea for a business.

Have you ever thought you had a great idea for a business but didn't do anything about it, only to find out that, a short while later, someone else did? How do you know if you'll be able to make the business work?

There are some basic skills that you, as a potential business owner, should have. If you don't have them then you need to at least have a friend or family member who does or be willing to pay an outside service or consultant to do these things for you. These skills include (but certainly aren't limited to):

Financial management and accounting - If you don't have the skills now, you either need to take the time to learn, or have someone else you can depend on to handle this side of the business for you.

Marketing - You have to be able to sell yourself or your business. If people don't know about you then you won't get any business, and if you don't have any business then, technically, you aren't really in business. So, marketing is a very important part of your skillset. Fortunately, it is also an easy skill to farm out to experts.

Management skills - You must have the management skills and organizational skills to wear the many hats you'll have to don in order to ran your business. If you have no management experience at least start reading management books of all type that would apply to your business.

Determination, enthusiasm, energy - No one ever said being your own boss was easy! In fact, you'll probably work harder than ever-you'll just get to reap more of the benefits. You have to have the energy to make your business succeed. If you have any doubts then maybe you should rethink the idea. If you read the success stories behind many businesses, you'll see the recurring theme that the business owner had no doubts that he or she would succeed, or that the thought of failing never entered their minds.

People are starting their own businesses every day. If you're thinking about joining them, you probably have a vision of what you want that business to be. What may excite you about your business is the product or service you have to offer, the success that you imagine, and the freedom of lifestyle that you are sure will come - in time. What may bore or even frighten you is the plethora of numbers you have to wrestle with. You will be asked business questions that may elicit a blank stare as your response. Cash accounting? Accrual basis?Profit and loss statement?Projections? Whether you want to create fine oil paintings or sell pork bellies on the street, your business will require some form of accounting.

It is a tool that will help you "account for" what your business has done, is doing, and hopes to do in the future. Accounting can be a bit like painting a picture, and a little like solving a puzzle.

The Verger.
There had been a wedding that afternoon at St. Peter's Church, and Edward Foreman still wore his verger's grown. He had been a verger for 16 years and liked his job. The verger was waiting for the vicar. The vicar had just been appointed. He was a red-faced energetic man and the verger disliked him. Soon the vicar came in and said:» Foreman, I've got something unpleasant to say to you. You have been here a great many years and I think you've fulfilled your duties quite satisfactorily here: but I found out a most striking thing the other day. I discovered to my astonishment that you can neither read nor write. I think you must learn, Foreman." "I'm afraid I can't now, Sir. I'm too old a dog to learn newtricks.» In that case, Foreman, I'm afraid you must go.” "Yes, Sir, I quite understand. I shall be very happy to hand in my resignation as soon as you have found somebody to take my place."

Up to now Foreman's face hadn't shown any signs of emotion. But when he had closed the door of the church behind him his lips trembled. He walked slowly with a heavy heart. He didn't know what to do with himself. True, he had saved a small sum of money but it was not enough to live on without doing something, and life costs more and more every year. It occurred to him now that a cigarette would comfort him and since he was not a smoker and never had any in his pockets he looked for a shop where he could buy a packet of food cigarettes. "That's strange", said Edward. "I can't be the only man who walks along the street and wants to have a smoke", he thought. An idea struck him. Why shouldn't he open a little shop here? "Tobacco and Sweets».» That’s an idea", he said. It is strange how things come to you when you least expect it."

In the course of ten years he acquired no less than ten shops and was making a lot of money. One morning the bank manager said that he wanted to talk to him. "Mr.Foreman, do you know how much money you have got in the bank?" "Well, I have a rough idea." "You have 30 thousand dollars and it's a large sum. You should invest it. We shall make a list of securitieswhich will bring you a better rate of interest than the bank can give you." There was a troubled look on Mr.Foreman's face.» And what will I have to do?". "Oh, you needn't worry", the banker smiled. "All you have to do is to read and to sign the papers." "That's the trouble, sir. I can sign my name but I can't read." The manager was so surprised that he jumped from his seat. He couldn't believe his ears. "Good God, man, what would you be if you had been able to read?!" "I can tell you that, sir", said Mr.Foreman. "I would be verger of St.Peter's church."
