T. Dear boys and girls!

Dear teachers and guests! We’re glad to see you here today!

P.P. Yes, of course.\No, we don’t. It’s not so fine.\ It’s fine. Are you fine today?

P.P. Yes, we are.

T. Please, look at the things on the table and guess, what kind of lesson we’ll have.
P. I think, our lesson will be devoted to different holidays.
T. You are absolutely right. We’re going to have an unusual lesson today, devoted to holidays in English-speaking countries.

I believe, that holidays are always great, whether they are just school holidays or festivals in different countries.

Do you like holidays? Why? What can you do during your holidays? (pupils answer the questions)

We can have a rest, enjoy ourselves, do what we want, go and visit our friends and relatives, go to different excursions and to different places.

T. Let’s start then! I wish you all the best! Today we’re going to speak about celebrations and festivals in the USA and in Great Britain, to work with a presentation, to listen to short texts about holidays, to read and to do many other interesting things.

II.BRAINSTORMING (КОРРЕКЦИЯ ФОНЕТИКИ, АКТИВИЗАЦИЯ ЛЕКСИКИ):

Holidays are important in my life because ….

Аудирование коротких текстов по теме:

Speaker 1. On that day people send cards and presents to their husbands, wives, boyfriends and girlfriends. You can also send a card to a person you don’t know. But traditionally you must never sign it.

Speaker 2. It’s a religious holiday. People go to church services. Woman bake hot cross buns and prepare tasty dishes. Children like the holiday very much, because the have an opportunity ti find a chocolate egg in the house or in the garden.

Speaker 3. No doubt, this is the most beautiful and the most important holiday for all the English-speaking counries. The streets and houses are decorated, everybody is smiling and laughing. Pudding is one of the traditional food there.

Speaker 4. It’s a very funny day. People play jokes at each other, but one mustn’t be rude! People like this day, because they have a lot of fun and merriment.

Speaker 5. On this holiday people wear masks and dress as ghosts and witches and some people make special lamps from pumpkins.

As English people say: “Well begun is half done”.

Thus, we begin with New Year’s Day (slide 8, 9 ). New Year is not as important in England as Christmas. Some people don’t celebrate it at all. Many people have New Year’s Parties. The party usually begins at 8 o’clock and goes on until early in the morning. At midnight they listen to the chimes of Big Ben, drink a toast to the New Year and sing Auld Lang Syne.

Make a dialogue, using given word combinations.

- I say, … , what British or American holidays do you like most of all?

- As for me, I like … very much.

- Why?

- Because it’s fun. Besides, you can receive presents.

- I see.

Does the New Year celebration in Britain differ from one in Russia?

P.: Yes, for the English and the Welsh it isn’t the greatest holiday of the year. People in England and Wales go to bed as usually while the Russians and the Scots prefer to see the old year out and the New Year in during the whole night. They call New Year’s Eve-Hogmanay

III. T. And now, let’s talk about the most popular holiday in all th English-speaking world-Christmas . (Slide 11-15 )

P. Christmas Day , December 25, is probably the most popular holiday in Great Britain and the USA. It is a family holiday. Traditionally all relatives and friends get together and give each other presents.

P. People send X-mas cards to their friends and relatives. People buy Christmas trees and decorate them with toys, tinsels, coloured balls and lights. Children wake up early to find stockings full of small presents on their bed.

P. The typical dinner consists of turkey with potatoes and other vegetables such as carrots and sprouts. In Britain this is followed by Christmas pudding - a sweet pudding containing a lot of dried fruit and often covered with burning brandy. Other traditional dish in Britain is a Christmas cake – a cake containing a lot of dried fruit and usually having a covering of icing.

T. Listen to the sounds of music, what is it about? By the way what holiday do they celebrate in February?(slides 16-18)

P.: The 14th of February is St. Valentine’s Day. It’s considered to be the day for the people, who are in love. They send romantic cards called valentines, give presents. The most popular wish is “Be my Valentine!” It is believed that Valentine was a Roman priest who married lovers. It’s becoming a tradition in our country to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day with the whole world. I’ll give everybody a heart, write you a wish and give it to your desk-mate and say “I love you”.

T. April Fools' Day, also known as All Fools' Day is certainly not a holiday, but everybody likes it so much!

April Fool’s Day is on the 1st of April. English children like this day very much. They play jokes and tricks on other people, even on teachers.

P.: It’s April fool’s Day in Britain and Russia on the 1st of April. In the early Roman calendar, April 1 was the first day of spring, the spring equinox, and before 154 B.C. it was New Years Day. In 1564, King Charles IX decreed that with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, New Year's be moved to January 1 from what was April 1 and those that celebrated the Old New Year's Day on April 1 were Fools.

 P. Most April fool jokes are in good fun and not meant to harm anyone. The cleverest April fool joke is the one where everyone laughs, especially the person upon whom the joke is played.

T.: Look at the slides and read some popular pranks (slides 19-23)
T. One of the most important religious holiday is Easter(slides 24-29)

T. You have heard a lot of information about Eater and now you’re going to look through the text and do some tasks to it.

Look at the sheets of paper on your desks.
Easter is the oldest and one of the most important festivals of the Christian community that is celebrated to mark the beginning of the spring season. There are a few things, such as the Easter eggs, bunnies and chocolates that are common to Easter celebrations. Easter is considered as a day of parties, gift-giving and moreover, the rise of the good from the evil. Easter is celebrated in England over a long week. The three most important days are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The main symbols of Easter and spring include bunnies and rabbits.

It is tradition to eat hot cross buns on Good Friday, as they symbolize the cross on which Jesus was crucified. People exchange Easter Eggs, Easter bread, hot cross buns and other gifts.
Easter bunnies are made and sold in large numbers and are an integral part of Easter celebrations in England. These bunnies are hidden along with Easter eggs in the house. Children are supposed to search and find these sweet treats. Easter greeting cards are confined to close friends and family only.

P. I’ve learned new facts about some Easter traditions. I’ve never heard about them before.

T. And now let’s have a rest. Stand up, please.

T. I think, we should also mention such nice holidays as Mother’s and Father’s Day, because these two persons are very important in our life.(slides 30-33)

P. On the second Sunday in May, British children of all ages treat their mothers to something special. It is the one day out of the year when children, young and old, try to show how much they love and appreciate their mothers.

T. Americans celebrate one more holiday, it’s Independence day. What do you know about it? Just a few words.

P. The 4th of July, an Independence Day, is the biggest national holiday of the USA. On this day in 1776 a document, known as the Declaration of Independence, was adopted. During this holiday American cities have parades, people shoot off fire-works in parks and fields.(slide 34)

T.: It’s October, 31 now.

P.:Look here! What is it? It’s a pumpkin lantern. (slides 35-38)

P.: The British celebrate Halloween on the 31 October. In late October the days get shorter and the nights get longer. The year is ending and everything is dying. Winter is coming with its long dark nights. It is time of Halloween. It was time of fear. In the past people believed in ghosts and witches and stayed at home.

P.At Halloween the ghosts of the dead and the witches rode in the sky on their broomsticks. Many countries celebrate Halloween but in different ways. Now ghosts and witches are people and children dressed in old and funny clothes and make a pumpkin lantern. Children go from house to house and say “Trick or treat”, which means “give us something to eat or we play a trick on you”. People give them fruit, sweets, cookies or chocolate.

T. Now let’s remember such nice holiday as Thanksgiving day. It’s also celebrated only in America.(slides 39-40)
P. Thanksgiving Day comes on the fourth Thursday of November. When the first settlers landed in America, their first year was very hard and 50 of 100 people died. But the Indians taught people how to plant corn and wild vegetables and in autumn they got a large harvest. Thanksgiving Day was their holiday, the day of giving thanks to God. It is a family holiday and Americans try to gather all family at home on this day.

T. Why celebrate holidays? (slide 42)

(Pupils give their answers)

* Now try to make a short story about British holidays.

(По каждому празднику – When is it celebrated? What people do on this holiday? Do you like this holiday?

Example: Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December. People usually have turkey and pudding for dinner. Besides, they sing carols. As for me I like this holiday because it is fun.

V. HOME – TASK:

Our lesson has come to an end.

I want you to make Holiday Cards. (slide 41) I advise you to make EASTER cards, because it’s the nearest holiday.

Look at the slide, please.

Besides, I advise you to think of your own holiday. I think, it’s so interesting!

VI. CONCLUSION:

a) SUMMARY

T. When we get acquainted with the culture, traditions and customs of another country, we begin to understand its people, their way of life and their views better.

Good Bye!
