About Myself Let me introduce myself. My name is Alexander, Alec for short. My full name, is Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov. Orlov is my surname, Alexan der is my first name and Sergeyevich is my patronymic. I am nearly nineteen — next Thursday is my birthday. Now I am a first-year student at the University. My parents have two more children besides me. Thus I have got an older brother and a younger sister. My sister Helen is just out of school. She is seventeen. She is very fond of music and her dream is to become a pianist. My brother, whose name is Michael, is eight years my senior. He is twenty-seven already. He is a builder. He is married and has a family of his own. They are four in the family. He has a wife and two children — a son and a daughter. They are twins. His wife's name is Nina. She is a surgeon by profession. They are not in Leningrad. They are in the Far East. My parents are not old at all. Father is fifty, and Mother is three years his junior. The attitude of people to a person depend on many things: his character, mind, manners, behaviour, abilities and appearance. If a person good-looking he feels more confident. Unfortunately, to be pretty or handsome doesn’t mean to be happy. Very often beautiful people are stupid, stubborn and arrogant. And unattractive people can be intelligent, kind and generous. That’s why people say: “Do not judge by appearance”. I have many friends, but Jane Brown and Andy Johnson are my special friends. Andy is tall (short) and lean. Jane is middle-sized (of medium size). She isn’t slim, she is pretty plump. Andy is strong and well-built. As for Jane, she doesn’t care about her figure. She is never on a diet and hates doing morning exercises. That’s why she often puts on weight. John took after his father in appearance and character. His face is long and thin (square). His features are regular and stern a bit. His complexion is ruby (fair, dark, clear). His forehead is broad (doomed) and high (law, narrow). He has got large (small) wide-set (close-set) and deep-set eyes (building eyes). They are hazel (green, steel-grey). People remember his eyes because they are piercing (curious, prying). His nose is straight (aquiline, hooked). His cheeks are hollow (plump, chubby). He has got thin (full, thick) lips. He is brunette (blond). He has got chestnut (auburn, red, dark, black) straight thick (thin) hair. Jane looks like (resembles) her mother. She is a blue-eyed girl. Jane has plump cheeks with dimples in them. She never worries about her hairdo (hairstyle), because she has got beautiful, long, thick, curly (wavy) hair. She thinks she would look nicer with a short haircut, and she wants to change the colour of her hair, but her mother doesn’t let her do it. To look more attractive she sometimes wears make-up: she puts a little black mascara on her eyelashes and some eye shadow on her eyelids. She hates lipstick and never applies it (puts it on) because she believes that her well-cut lips are good enough. As for their characters, I kike them both. Let me give a touch on Jane’s character. It is easy to get along with her. People find her sociable and easy-going. Nobody can call selfish (unselfish), greedy (generous), ill-bred (well-bred), angry (kind). She is reserved, modest (shy) and good-tempered (hot-tempered). I think she is of romantic nature, she is interested in music, art, theatre. She is keen on literature especially she likes poems. She is good at writing verses. A lot of my classmates envy that my best (good, bosom, true, faithful) friend is Andy. I respect many traits of his character. He is honest, brave (courageous), cheerful with a good sense of humour. He is always the life and soul of the party. I am proud of my friends because they are caring, faithful (sympathetic) and sincere. They are ready to help you when it is necessary. We have much in common, we spend plenty of time together and I appreciate their charming (magnetic, dynamic, striking, strong) personalities more than their appearance (looks). Family and Friendship A 'typical' British family used to consist of mother, father and two children, but in recent years there have been many changes in family life. Some of these have been caused by new laws and others are the result of changes in society. Members of a family — grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins — keep in touch, but they see less of each other than they used to. This is because people often move away from their home town to work, and so the family becomes scattered. Christmas is the traditional season for reunions. Although the family group is smaller nowadays than it used to be, relatives often travel many miles in order to spend the holiday together. In general, each generation is keen to become independent of parents in establishing its own family unit, and this fact can lead to social as well as geographical differences within the larger family group. Relationships within the family are different now. Parents treat their children more as equals than they used to, and children have more freedom to make their own decisions. The father is more involved with bringing up children, often because the mother goes out to work. Increased leisure facilities and more money mean that there are greater opportunities for the individual to take part in activities outside the home. Although the family holiday is still an important part of family life (usually taken in August, and often abroad) many children have holidays away from their parents, often with a school party or other organized group. We recently got a new flat. It is a fine flat indeed. We have a living-room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bath-room and a lavatory. In the living-room we have our meals and gather in the evening. In the kitchen mother cooks the food. Of course we have running water, a gas range and elect ric light. We also use electricity for our vacuum cleaner, refrige rator, for ironing clothes, and so on. In the living-room there is a big table, a cupboard, a sofa, an arm-chair and several chairs. On the beds there are big soft pillows with neat pillow cases, sheets and blankets. In every room we have a number of pictures on the walls. Besides, in the living-room you can see a number of photos of all our relatives. A radio set (wireless) stands on a special little table. We enjoy listening-in (to the radio). A few days ago we bought a TV set and yesterday we all came together to watch television.
