T: Good afternoon, everyone! I mean you, students, and our highly respected guests. Having nervous jitters? – So am I. Before we start our talking I`d like you to watch video. T: We have just watched the music video and it`s not by chance. The reason why we have chosen the topic “Environmental problems” is quite vivid. Why? Student 1: Because our planet is on the verge of a Global Ecological Catastrophe. T: You are absolutely right. What do you think we are talking about? St. 2: Firstly we shall have to give a general idea of the ecological situation on our planet. T: Right to the point. What else? St. 3: We have to highlight the most dangerous tendencies that have deadly consequences for us. T: What must we do it for? St. 4: We must find the ways of saving our planet, of solving ecological problems. T: You have got the case. And now let`s brainstorm these dangerous tendencies. T: And now let`s consult the diagram on the screen and compare our answers and see if we have missed anything important. (Демонстрируется слайд презентации) T: On the previous lesson everybody got a task: to highlight one of the ecological problems, to perform a presentation and to show the ways of solving the problem. You will perform your problems in chain. The rest of the students and our dear guests will evaluate your performances and give you marks. St. 1: Air Pollution About 150 years ago the air was pure and clean. Then people started building factories and many of the things they make, like cars, put a lot of harmful gases into the air. Today the air is so polluted in some places that it`s not always safe to breathe there. Many cities around the world have air polluted with “smog”. This is so strong in some places that the air, which should be a beautiful blue, looks brown. Polluted air is not only bad for people and animals, but also for trees and plants. And in some places it`s even damaging farmers` crops – the food we eat. So it`s very important for us to “clean up our act”, and clean up the air we all breathe. To stop air pollution we must:
St. 2: Acid Rains When we look up, we see the clouds and the blue sky. But there are other things in the sky that we don`t see. Some of them are harmful to the Earth. When power plants burn coal to make electricity, and when cars burn gasoline, invisible gases are released into the air. Some of these gases can mix with water and make it acidic, like lemon juice or vinegar. Sometimes the gases get into rain clouds, where they get mixed with rain or snow. This is called acid rain. When acid rain falls in lakes, it changes them. The lakes and rivers become more acidic. It kills the plants and animals that usually live in the water. That is why fish are dying. The scientists are finding other effects of acid rain. In some large areas trees are dying. Some kinds of trees cannot live in the soil that is very acidic. It`s very important for us to stop making acid rains. One good way to do it to drive our cars less. Another good way is to save energy. The less energy we use, the less coal those power plants will have to burn. To stop pollution from power plants we need to design, build and use solar, wave, wind, -geo-thermal power plants. St. 3: Water Pollution The planet Earth is mostly water. Oceans cover the biggest part of it – and there are lakes, rivers, streams, and even water underground. All life on the Earth – from the smallest bug to the biggest whale – depends on the water. It`s precious. The greatest environment disaster afflicting the planet is not GM (genetically modified) foods or crops, the felling of tropical rainforests or even global warming, but the scourge of dirty drinking water. It kills 2.2 million a year in developing countries. Most victims are children. 40% of people live in countries where water is scarce: by 2025 this is expected to rise to 66%. About 1.2 billion people do not have adequate sanitation. Hundreds of millions suffer repeated, enervating bouts of diarrhoea and other diseases – sapping their ability to work and grow food. To stop water pollution we must:
St. 4: Land Pollution When you throw something away, it goes in a garbage can. Once a week a garbage truck comes and the can is emptied, and that`s the last you see of it. But what do you think happens to the garbage then? Does it just disappear? No way! Almost all garbage is taken to a garbage dump, or landfill, where the garbage trick empties it onto the ground. After the truck leaves, a big tractor comes along and pushes dirt on top of the garbage. So, most of our garbage is just buried. Now we are making so much garbage that in many places, there is not enough room to bury it all. To stop land pollution we need to:
St. 5: Disappearing Animals Every day there are more and more people living on the Earth. All these people need room to live. So they move into the places that are already homes for plants and animals. Forests are cut down, and wild areas are filled with houses and stores. When people move into a new land, the plants and animals that live there can become endangered – which means they begin to disappear because there`s no place for them to live. Some even become extinct – which means that they all die out, and are gone from the Earth forever. We enjoy pictures and stories about dinosaurs that lived on the Earth many millions of years ago. They`re all extinct now. It is too late for a fifth of the world`s freshwater fish species, which have vanished for ever. And about three- quarters of the wild relatives of crops, which are vital for preserving and increasing food supplies through interbreeding, have been lost over the past century. To protect wildlife we must:
(Демонстрируется презентация учащихся) St. 6: Depletion of the Ozone Layer Up in the sky, above the air we breathe, there`s a layer of gas called ozone. It helps us by blocking out the sun rays that can harm our skin, and by letting the rays that are good for us come through. We are lucky to have the ozone layer to protect us. The protective layer of the Earth, the ozone layer, which protects the Earth from the sun`s destructive UV (ultraviolet) rays, is being damaged by chlorofluorocarbons. They are released by the daily use of industrial and household products: refrigerators, air conditioners, foam insulation, cleaning chemicals, food packaging. In the ozone layer they attack the ozone molecules making a hole. This “hole” allows more UV rays to penetrate the atmosphere and get to the Earth. It increases the risk of skin cancer, weakens the immune system of people. Besides, UV rays negatively affect the growth of plankton in the oceans, an essential part of the marine – life food chain, reduce economically important crops (rice, cotton, soy beans). The life cycle is going to be undermined by the ozone. To stop the depletion of the ozone layer we must:
(Демонстрируется презентация учащихся) T: There is a very good Russian poem about the depletion of the ozone layer: Озоновая дыра над Антарктидой! T: Of course, speaking about ecological problems we should mention those of our region. St. 7, 8: ECOLOGY IN THE BELGOROD REGION The Belgorod Region is situated in the central part of Russia. It borders on some Russian regions and the Ukraine. Our region connects Moscow with southern regions. It is densely populated (55men/km2), has highly developed industry: mining, chemical, and metallurgical. The Belgorod region is intersected by a great number of roads. There are 10 large plants of building materials, 2 cement plants, 90 mine quarries. Every year the region industry pollutes the atmosphere with 290.00 tons of harmful substances. The industry and population of the region use a great number of fresh water (410 mln m3). Industrial enterprises emit tons of industrial wastes. These emissions have consequences for nature and man's health, weakening the immune system of people. The by-products of man's activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we grow grain and vegetables on. Environmental protection is of a universal concern. That's why serious measures to create a system of ecological security, to improve the ecological situation have been taken by the Belgorod authorities and the Duma. The range of environmental problems is wide. The initial steps onward to protect nature, to stop accommodating rubbish in the countryside have been taken. These measures also include:
The region Duma and the governor adopted the programme of Ecological Improvement of the Belgorod region. Л great sum of money will be used to fulfill it. We must consume less, recycle more, conserve wildlife and nature, act according to the motto "think locally, think globally, act locally", remove factories and plants from towns, use modern technologies, redesign and modify purifying systems for cleaning and trapping harmful substances, protect the greenery, broaden ecological education. (Демонстрируется презентация учащихся) T: You have seen all the presentations made by the students. Let us sum up all mentioned above and dwell upon the ways of solving ecological problems. What must we do? You`ll see what is being done in some countries. For example, we can take a lesson from the attitude of the British people to the problem of preserving surrounding. (Демонстрируются слайды презентации) T: I want you to read the quotations of the famous people about ecological problems and our attitude to their solving. T: Today we`ve tried to discuss the main ecological problems, to find out the ways of solving them. If we think globally and act locally, I`m sure we`ll survive. Our lesson is practically over. We`ll finish it by reflexing our attitude to the discussed problems. I want you to choose a smile-picture of a definite colour to demonstrate your attitude to the importance of problems discussed today: Yellow colour means that you are in a good mood and you like everything discussed today. Green colour means your indifference to the discussed problems. Some things were interesting for you, some things not. Violet colour means that you are in bad mood, you don`t like our lesson, you are not interested in the discussed topic. T: Thank you. Please, collect evaluation cards. Your marks for the lesson are… Thank you for the lesson. |
