Halloween

When autumn comes round with its red and yellow leaves and chill air, girls and boys start thinking of Halloween. On the last day of October in the in the evening is when this holiday is observed.

Every year children eagerly look forward to it and prepare for it. In the display windows of the shops there are false faces, party; decorations, paper Jack O'Lanterns and black cats and witches. Round yellow pumpkins are brought in from the fields to be made into grinning Jack O'Lanterhs. Great preparations are made for the costumes to be worn on this night of nights.

Halloween in England and America is the children's own festival. Everywhere on this night the boys and girls-dress up, some of them in fancy costumes and others in funny attire. Then they mask and go to visit their fiends or to parties or to take part in a parade. They set out for an evening of fun and they are sure to find it. Those who go disguised to the homes, of their friends and neighbours are given nuts, glasses of sweet cider, apples arid cookies.

In many towns there is a big parade, in which anyone may enter and compete for prizes given, for the best costumes. The grown-ups as well as the children will spend several weeks getting their costumes ready.
Answer the questions:

1. When is Halloween observed?

2. What pagan rituals do you think this festival goes back to?

3. Why is a pumpkin such an important symbol of Halloween?

4. Why is it "children's own festival"?

5. What are children's favourite Halloween occupations?
Victoria at School

Victoria goes to Carlton Hill Primary School. The school is about ten or eleven years old. Altogether there are only about 100 children in the whole school. There are four classes with about 25 children in each. Vicky is in an introductory class which means her class has some four-year-olds and some five-year-olds. When Vicky reaches six she will go into another class.

There are a lot of interesting things on the walls such as Alphabet posters, shapes, numbers, picture cards with words to learn, posters of animals, paintings done by the children.

There is a nature table with buds and flowers. All the different kinds of flowers are labelled.

There are shelves with books on and a rack covered with books.

There is a lovely Wendy House which takes up one corner of the room. It is hand-made out of wood. You can fit about six or seven children in without being cramped together. It is just like a miniature ideal home. Near where all the books are, there is a big carpet with an armchair where Miss Cull, Vicky's teacher, sits when she reads to them, and when they sing songs, all the children gather round her on the carpet.
Answer the questions:

1. Why is Vicky's class called introductory?

2. Why are there only five desks in the classroom?

3. Why are there pictures on the pegs?

4. Explain the choice of objects you can see on the wall.

5. What is the function of the nature table?

6. Why is the wooden house called Wendy House?

7. Is it a good idea for the children to play on the carpet?

8. Can you think of some other things that can be found in Vicky's classroom and that are not mentioned in the text?
Why do Children Play?

Play is the core of a child's development in the world. A recently born child is new to the world and the World is new to him. As play begins, the child learns: about himself or herself, about other people about the world and how it works.

Play can take up all of the child's attention, for there is so much to explore in the world, such as: shape (round or square), texture (rough, smooth, slippery), consistency (hard, soft), taste.

Children of different ages reach different "play. stages'', and progress through these stages is a matter of maturity. Knowledge of the average ages at which a child masters certain skills will help the adult to know what to expect and be able to provide play opportunities, which will help the child on to the next stage of development.

As adults we must be aware of the importance of children's play and it is our job to:

– provide play space

– organise the play materials

– allow opportunities for messy play

– join in throwing a ball, playing board games, etc.

– make opportunities for children to be together so they can play

We are there to extend the child's knowledge, to encourage and praise him when a new skill is acquired. It is also our role to explain new techniques and always to be ready with kisses' arid cuddles when things go wrong.
Circus

Leslie was out in the street watching the circus coming. It.came in a long procession.

When the beginning was just beside her she could not see the end. The band came first. They wore red jackets and blue trousers with lots of gold on them and they played a marching tune. Some children were marching along with them, but Leslie stood still because she wanted to see everything in the procession.

Next came the elephants. The biggest elephant had a man sitting on his shoulders. Each of the others was holding, onto the tail of the one in front.

Then came a lorry with a cage on it, and in the cat was a lion. After the lion came two clowns. One had a large red nose. The other had fuzzy yellow hair and he carried a bunch of balloons. He gave Leslie a blue one.

Next came all the performing animals. Leslie saw the dogs, the chimp, the sea-lion, and the ponies. She liked the ponies best of all. One pony had a girl on its back. But she was not sitting or» it. In stead, she was standing. Leslie wished she could be a circus girl.

At the end came the strong man and another clown on stilts. All the circus people went into a big field and the men started to put up the tent. They watched the men working until the tent was ready. Then inside the tent the band started to play.
Answer the questions:

1. Why was Leslie out in the street?

2. Did the procession impress her?

3. Who came first? What were they wearing?

4. Were there many animals? What were they?

5. Who else took part in the profession?

6. Po you think Leslie liked the circus? Why? And you?

7. What did She like most of all?

8. Do you think adults like circus performances? Why?
