A. Morris Dance is a traditional English ceremonial dance for men. It is part of a complex of men’s springtime ritual found throughout Indo-European regions. Morris dances in central England are performed by a team of six dancers decked with ribbons, rosettes and flowers. Jingles are strapped to their legs. They dance with an upward-jumping step, often swinging handkerchiefs or clashing thick wooden sticks. The Morris Dance reached the height of its development in 15th and 16th centuries, survived through the 1800s and enjoyed a notable revival after World War I. B. Every year, thousands of people come from all over the world to Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, England, for the Robin Hood Festival. For five days, they celebrate the life and legend of the most famous outlaws in English history, Robin Hood and his Merry Men, who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. They are said to have lived in this forest more than six hundred years ago. Ten miles from Sherwood Forest is The World of Robin Hood, a theme park devoted to the story of the outlaw and his world. C. Robin Hood is known to be a legendary figure in English epic writing. According to the descriptions found in manuscripts, which date from about the fourteen hundreds, he was quite short but had very broad shoulders, which would have coincided with him using the bow. To use a longbow you needed to have a lot of upper body strength. He could have been a son of a nobleman, which is also part of the legend, who was found hunting in the forest. Of course that was against the law during the reign of King Richard the First, so he was outlawed for this. D. This amazing tree is called the Major Oak. It is believed to be over a thousand years old. Robin Hood and his Merry Men are said to have hidden here from the Sheriff of Nottingham. The Major Oak stands at the heart of Sherwood Forest. In Robin Hood’s time, the forest was very large. It must have been easy for Robin Hood and his men to hide here. Today, the Sherwood Forest Trust is planning to plant large numbers of trees and to restore a huge area of the forest. E. According to legend, the Isle of Skye located off the northwest coast of Scotland was inhabited by Cailleach Bhur, the goddess of winter. She had enslaved a beautiful girl, the sweetheart of Spring, who appealed to the Sun for help. In response, the angry Sun buried his burning spear at Cailleach Bhur as she rode across Skye. But he missed his mark and destroyed the landscape which broke into a range of hills. These hills are rarely covered with snow even in winter. They stand dark against the sky. F. Broadstairs is a small, unspoilt seaside town on the Kent coast in the south east of England, about 75 miles from London. English people have been coming to Broadstairs for holidays since the middle of the last century. Every August, there is a folk festival in Broadstairs. Musicians and singers come from all over the world. There are several language schools in Broadstairs. A lot of young people go there to improve their English. Broadstairs is a pleasant small town on the seaside with a wonderful beach, a nice centre, and old buildings. G. Frank Butland was a famous English eccentric who lived in the 19th century. His house was full of all kinds of animals, most of them running free. His monkeys lived in the sitting room and used to bite his guests. Every night the caring master gave them beer and they were fond of a drop of sweet wine on Sundays. Frank also liked to cook and eat animals. He ate mice on buttered toast or a bit of lion that died in a nearby zoo. The only thing he hated was flies. He never ate them.
Recovery from jetlag can take as long as a day or two for every time zone crossed. So if you are flying east-west for holiday or on business, it is likely to mean A ______________________________ . A Strange Story In the northern part of Austin there once dwelt an honest family by the name of Smothers. The family consisted of John Smothers, his wife, himself, their little daughter, five years of age, and her parents, making six people toward the population of the city when counted for a special write-up, but only three by actual count. One night after supper the little girl was seized with a severe colic, and John Smothers hurried down town to get some medicine. He never came back. The little girl recovered and in time grew up to womanhood. The mother grieved very much over her husband’s disappearance, and it was nearly three months before she married again and moved to San Antonio. The little girl also married in time, and after a few years had rolled around, she also had a little girl five years of age. She still lived in the same house where they dwelt when her father had left home and never returned. One night by a remarkable coincidence her little girl was taken with cramp colic on the anniversary of the disappearance of John Smothers, who would now have been her grandfather if he had been alive and had a steady job. “I will go down town and get some medicine for her,” said John Smith. (for it was none other than he whom she had married). “No, no, dear John,” cried his wife. “You, too, might disappear for ever, and then forget to come back.” So John Smith did not go, and together they sat by the bedside of little Pansy (for that was Pansy’s name). After a little, Pansy seemed to grow worse, and John Smith again attempted to go for medicine, but his wife would not let him. Suddenly the door opened, and an old- man, stooped and bent, with long white hair, entered the room. “Hello, here is grandpa,” said Pansy. She had recognized him before any of the others. The old man drew a bottle of medicine from his pocket and gave Pansy a spoonful. She got well immediately. “It was a little late,” said John Smothers, “as I waited for a street-car.” (By O. Henry)
