About Myself and My Family My name is Natalie. My surname is Ivanova. I was born on the 9th of September, 1992 in Karaganda. My address is Flat 2, 19, Pichugin Street. I am tall. I am not very thin. My face is round. I have a fair complexion. My forehead is narrow and low. I have a straight nose and protruding chin. My eyebrows are bushy; my eyelashes are thick and long. I am fond of reading, listening to music and playing computer games. I like to read historical books, books about adventures and detective stories. My musical tastes depend on my mood. I think every apple is good in its season. My favourite groups are “Queen” and “Beatles”. Sometimes I like to listen to the Russian classical music. My favourite sport is tennis. I have not much time to watch TV, but sometimes I spend an hour or two watching an interesting film or a news program. I have many friends. We spend much time together, going out to the cinema or to a disco party, speaking about lessons, music, discussing our problems. I’ve just finished a school and now I am a student of Karaganda State Technical University. I am going to be an engineer. I like my future profession. I am going to do my best to become a good specialist. The family plays a very important role in everybody’s life. Labour achievements, mood and what is called happiness depend on the family relations. My family is large. We are the family of seven: my mother, my father, my grandmother, my grandfather, my sister, my brother and I. My mother’s name is Olga. She is forty years old. She is a teacher. She is very calm, kind, and clever woman. She is well-bred and talented. My father’s name is Oleg. He is forty-three years old. He is a doctor. He is a man of strong character. He is very experienced, responsible, and reliable. He often tells me interesting stories about different countries. My father can do a lot of things. He teaches me to drive a car, to fish and other things. All of us love him very much. My grandmother’s name is Lena. She is seventy years old. She doesn’t work now. She is a pensioner, but she has a lot of work to do about the house. All of us try to help her. My grandmother’s hobby is knitting. My grandfather’s name is Vlad. He is seventy-five years old. He is a pensioner too. He likes to repair furniture. My brother and sister are pupils. Their names are Victor and Svetlana. They are younger than me. They are twins. They are very naughty, sociable and energetic. My sister is fond of swimming. Everybody has own duty about the house. As for me I must go shopping, clean the rooms. It is not difficult for me. I like our home to be clean and tidy. In the evenings we like to watch TV, to read books and newspapers, to talk about different things, to discuss our problems together. When the weather is good we go for a walk. Our family is very friendly. We love each other very much. I think home is the nicest place. As proverb says, “East or west home is best”. 1. a) Two young people, George and Ann, meet after a long time. George: I wished to see you very much, Ann. Ann: I am very glad to meet you too. It’s a long time since we have met last time. George: It is, indeed. I think it’s about eight years, isn’t it? Ann: It must me eight, I think. George: You have changed, Ann. Ann: Have I? George: Yes, a great deal. Ann: Am I like what you expected me to be? George: No, Ann. You are much more beautiful. Ann: Am I? George: Yes. But do you know, last night I was trying to imagine you as a … Ann: A fat, blonde girl, with round blue eyes and short curly hair? George: No, Ann, but as a tall and slim girl with a sleek long hair, with dimples in your cheeks. Ann: Oh, yes! That’s just like me, isn’t it? You must have seen me before you came here! George: No, indeed I was only guessing. Ann: Good guessing! You know, George, when I got your email yesterday, I also tried to imagine you. George: Well… Ann: I won’t tell you. At least, not now. George: When? Ann: Sometime later. b) Marry discusses her family. Alex: Hi, Mary. Marry: Hi, Alex. Alex: So, um, how big is your immediate family? Marry: Ah, there are four of us. Alex: Four people, OK. Who’s in it? Marry: Not big really. Well, there's my mum and my dad and my older brother and then there's me. Alex: Oh, I see....Does everybody still live together? Marry: Well, actually at the moment my brother lives in London and my parents live in Moscow and I live in Karaganda but very soon we are all going to move back in together. Alex: So who is the oldest person in your family? Marry: The oldest person is probably my great aunt and she's 80. Alex: Oh, and who is the youngest person in your family? Marry: Actually, my cousin was born about two weeks ago. She's called Ema. She's two weeks old. Alex: Wow! Did you see a picture of her? That's really exciting. Marry: Yes, it was nice. Alex: And how big is your extended family? Marry: Well, I'm not from a really big family. My dad has got three sisters and my mom has got one brother. So you know, some people are from the large families with ten children, and they have lots of aunties, and uncles. It's not like that in my family. Alex: Oh, I see. OK, well thanks for that story, Marry. Marry: Oh, no problem. Thanks, Alex.

JUST FOR FUN THE CROWD Brown was out walking one day with his wife and his very large family. In the street he was stopped by a policeman who grabbed him by the shoulder.   "Hold on!" protested Brown. "What have I done?" "I certainly don't know what you've done," answered the policeman, "but I do want to know why the crowd is following you!"  IN A TRAIN CARNick with his father went to see Grandmother. In the train Nick every minute put his head out of the window. His father said, "Nick, keep quiet! Don't put your head out of the window!" But Nick went on putting his head out of the window. Here his father took Nick's cap quietly, hid it behind his  back and said, "You see, your cap has flown." Nick was afraid. He began to cry. He wanted to have his cap back. His father said, "Well, whistle once! Perhaps, your cap will come back." Nick came up to the window and whistled. Nick's father put quickly the cap on Nick's head. Oh! It was wonderful! Nick laughed. He was pleased. He took quickly his father's cap and threw it out of the window.
