UNIT 1

On Holiday

When was the last time you had a holiday? And did you organize the trip or did you take a package tour? These days, most people choose a package tour, especially when they go abroad on holiday. They pay for their travel and accommodation in their own country, and they take traveller’s cheques which they exchange for local money when they arrive in the foreign country. In many countries if you go to a travel agent you can buy a “last minute” package or package holidays that someone has cancelled for up to 50 % less than the original cost.

But in the past it was very different. In fact, before the middle of the nineteenth century, travelling for pleasure was rare and very expensive, and only a few rich people travelled abroad. But now everything has changed. Thanks to mass tourism, every one can get the benefits of travel.

Isn’t it wonderful to discover new places? Travel has always been a part of people’s education. It teaches people about art and culture. It teaches them to understanding. You can also improve your knowledge of foreign languages. If you ask a lot of tourists why they go, they will often mention world famous museums, national parks, castles and royal places as the main reasons.

I. Look at the types of holiday and choose the one you are interested in.

Types of holiday

 A holiday that is organized and paid for in advance is called a package holiday.

 Some common types of holiday:

- a seaside holiday (at a seaside resort)

- a walking holiday

- a camping holiday (at a camp site)

- a coach tour (going from place to place by coach)

- a cruise (going from place to place by ship)

- an activity holiday (doing a special activity, e.g. climbing, sailing, safari, horse riding, scuba diving)

 We say go on holiday and be on holiday: They’re on holiday in Italy.

 The period when children are not at school is called the holidays (e.g. the summer holidays) or the vacation (e.g. the summer vacation).

A day when people don’t work (e.g. May 1^st, New Year’s Day) is a national holiday or public holiday.
Festivals are special occasions (e.g. Christmas, Carnival) which people celebrate by taking part in traditional activities.

 You go on a journey, a trip, a tour, a picnic, an excursion (= short organized trip).

For activities we use go + ing, e.g. go skiing, go fishing.

 Cathedrals, castles, etc., are sights (=things people go to see). Tourists often go sightseeing or see the sights.

II. Some people think that tourists have no respect for the countries they visit. The beauty of many places has disappeared forever. Many places are polluted. Tourism destroys ancient cultures and traditional ways of life. So, who needs such holidays? Are you of the same opinion? Express your point of view for or against travelling. Use the expressions given below.

III. You’re planning a holiday but your partner has a different opinion about the way to travel, places to visit and the things to take with you. Try to persuade your partner to choose your kind of holiday because your choice is better. Use the expressions given below and make up a dialogue.

Holiday activities

Beach	sunbathing, swimming, windsurfing, scuba diving
Mountains and lakes	walking, climbing, skiing, camping, sailing, canoeing, fishing
Towns and cities	sightseeing, visiting churches, cathedrals, mosques, museums, art galleries, castles

Some things to take on holiday

Clothes	anorak, T-shirts, swimming costume, shorts, walking boots, trainers, sandals
Equipment	tent, sleeping bag, skis, face mask, map, camera, film, binoculars, beach mat, life jacket, compass
First aid kit	insect repellent, aspirin, suntan cream
Luggage	suitcase, bag, rucksack (or backpack)
Documents	passport, traveller’s cheques, tickets, (international) driver’s license, insurance

IV. Do you organise everything in advance? Do you leave everything till the last minute? Are you in between? What do you do first? At what times do you do the things listed in the table below?

make a list of things to do;

call for a taxi;

get a guidebook;

take your travel insurance;

arrange accommodation;

get a visa;

check your passport is in order;

hide any valuables;

get foreign currency

V. Read the advice for travellers. Say which is relevant to your country.

Advice for travellers

* Before you travel, tell someone exactly where and when you are going.

* Make sure you know where your country’s embassy is.

Luggage

 Carry your handbag with you at all times.

 Don’t leave your luggage unattended.

Money

 Don’t carry large sums of cash on you.

 Don’t carry your wallet in an outside pocket.

 Keep a note of the serial number of your traveller’s cheques.

 Leave large sums of cash and valuables in your hotel safe.

Documents

 Keep your passport with you at all times.

 Don’t leave personal documents in your hotel room.

Taxis

 Check the meter is on.

 Tip the driver 10%.

 Don’t use taxis without meters.

Exchange

 Don’t change your money with street touts.

 Use only banks, your hotel or official exchange bureau.

The City centre

 Don’t go to the city alone at night.

 Don’t use public transport late at night.

 Ask for details of unsafe areas at your hotel reception.

VI. What advice would you give somebody coming to your country?

VII. Write a composition starting with “There is nothing like a holiday in …..” The following questions and expressions in the box might be of help to you:

What was the best thing about your holiday?
