Read the text and choose which answer is correct:

Two Peas in a Pod

Two peas in a pod, they called us. Two drops of water. And then there were our names. It was crazy – they called us Edie and Evie! Even our names were almost identical.

They even dressed us the same. My mother said that it was easier for her just to buy two of everything. Sometimes it was the same clothes but in different colours – a red top for me, and a yellow one for my sister, for example. When we changed the clothes they still couldn’t tell us apart. Not even our parents could tell us apart. Our schoolteachers never could.

Sometimes we could hardly tell ourselves from each other. At least when we were small. But as we grew up things began to change.

Everybody thinks identical twins are, well, identical. But if you’re a twin you’ll know that it’s not true. Physically, yes, we were almost identical. I say almost, because there was the birthmark. My sister has a very small brown spot on her left shoulder. I don’t. This was the only way we could ever be told apart.

But other than that, twins, even identical ones, are different inside. I think we started to change when we started school. I was always very good. I never got into trouble, I always did all of my homework and did very well in all the tests and exams. Evie wasn’t like that. Evie was always getting into trouble. Evie never did her homework. Evie was a really bad student who never studied and never learned anything. She would have failed her exams – but of course she didn’t. Why? Well, it’s simple, isn’t it? If you have an identical twin, how do you know which is which?

Read the story and answer the questions:

You would not believe what happened two days ago. My fiancé and I were busy working when we noticed our two chocolate labs were nowhere to be found. How could this be? We have a big backyard for them to run around in and a fence closes it off so that they cannot get out. Well it turns out somebody and we still do not know whom, left our gate open! When our dogs realized the gate was open they ran for the hills, and I mean literally!

It took us an hour to realize that they were gone and we had no idea where to look. Our house is on a hill and there are tons of other homes and fields that surround us. My fiancé and I jumped in the car as fast as we could and drove around looking for them for hours. After a good couple of hours we knew we had to come home and wait to see if anybody turned them in. Now these two dogs would stick out to anybody. They are best friends and so they always travel together. Also they are both about 90lbs so they look like miniature horses.

The dogs got out about 10am and at 3pm somebody had taken them to the dog shelter and that is where we found them. We ended up having to pay an impound fee and now we are researching who could have possibly left our gate open. What a crazy day!

Read the story “Dinner” and comment on the title.

Dinner.

A father came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.

Son said: “Father, may I ask you a question?” Father replied: “Yeah, sure, what is it?” Son asked: “Father, how much do you make an hour?” Father said angrily: “That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” Son replied: “I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” Father answered: “If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”

“Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Father, may I please borrow $10?”

The father was furious, “If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard everyday for such childish behavior.”

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. Father sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so the father had calmed down and started to think, maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often.

The father went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” Father asked. “No, Father, I am awake,” replied the little boy. “I have been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the father. “It’s been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here’s the $10 you asked for.”

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh, thank you, Father!” He yelled.

Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The father, seeing that the little boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father. “Why do you want more money if you already have some?” the father grumbled. ‘Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” the little boy replied. “Father, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.”

Say “true”, “false” or “not stated”:

  1. The father came home after 10 o’clock in the evening.

  2. The boy wondered what the father did at work.

  3. The father explained why he was so late.

  4. The boy asked for some money without any explanation.

  5. The father was always furious.

  6. The boy didn’t sleep when the father came into his room.

  7. The father wanted to find out why his son needed the money.

  8. The boy gave all his money to his father.

  9. The boy wanted to show something to his father and asked him to come early.

  10. The boy needed his father’s company badly.

Do You Think Mass Media Play an Important Part in the Life of the Society?

I. Read the text quickly and answer these questions

  1. What part do mass media play in the life of society?

  2. Why does TV dominate the lives of the most families?

  3. What is a forum?

  4. What kinds of programmes attract vast audiences?

  5. How do mass media stimulate science and progress?

  6. Why are the people annoyed by TV commercials?

It goes without saying that mass media has become part and parcel of any contemporary society. The press, the radio and television play a very important role in the life of the society. They inform, educate and entertain people. They also influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. In other words, mass media plays a very important role in moulding public opinion.

Millions of people watch TV and read newspapers in their spare time. The daily paper dominates family life at breakfast. Most of people can't do without a newspaper in the underground or during the lunch break. Say, my family subscribes to Izvestiya and Komsomolka, because they are informative, interesting and objective.

TV also dominates the life of the family most of the time. It's needless to say that the TV set is not just a piece of furniture. It is someone who is "one of the family". It is also a habit-forming drug impossible to resist. The radio is turned on most of the time, creating a permanent background noise.

Generally I'm not very keen on politics, but I do watch news and various commentary and discussions called forums. At a forum several authorities exchange views on social, economic and political problems, as well as on books of common interest.

Various radio and TV games, such as a panel game or a quiz programme also attract a large audience. During a radio panel-game people send questions to the studio to be answered by the members of the panel, who compete for the best results.

It's no secret that some of the TV and radio stations are owned by big corporations, thus the owners can advertise whatever they choose. Very often the firms and joint ventures sponsor shows and programmes, thus giving common people a good chance to make a fortune or to win a valuable prize.

I dare say that mass media stimulates science and progress. To advertise their goods commercial firms buy TV and radio time. So most of the up to-date goods, new inventions and technologies become popular and well known with the help of mass media. So mass media promotes quality and progress into our every day life.

Of course advertising promotes business and benefits businessmen. However it annoys the general public. The play you are watching on TV may be interrupted several times by an appeal to use a new perfume or detergent, or drink a certain beer.

However it wouldn't be fair to say that our mass media do not try to raise the cultural level of the people or to develop their artistic taste. I'm generally too short of time to attend an exhibition or to go to the theatre, but I watch a play or a ballet on TV with great pleasure. Thus mass media can save us a lot of time, money and efforts, keeping people aware of what is happening in the world around us.
