Elena Chekalkina Understanding the Trans-Pacific Partnership The report covers the key issues of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). With the Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations at an impasse, the TPP negotiations have taken center stage as the most significant trade initiative of the 21st century. The TPP serves as an instructive negotiating laboratory that could yield useful precedents for other trade initiatives in the APR. The TPP is a central pathway for economic integration in the APEC region and hopefully will also inspire new global trade talks. Perhaps even more important is its strategic value in reinforcing economic and political relationships among the Asia-Pacific countries. Despite this effort, however, the TPP is not well understood. In part, the reason lies in the dynamism of the TPP initiative. Unlike other free trade pacts, the growing membership as the talks have proceeded and the broad range, complexity, and novelty of the issues on the agenda have made it difficult to track the substantive detail and progress of the talks. Today the interest to the problem concerning German colonists in the Volga region has increased. “The Diaries of Martin Klaassen”, written in the middle of the XIXth century, is a brilliant source for history of the Volga German Mennonite community. Martin Klaassen (1820-1881), the author of “The Diaries“, was a school teacher in Köppental – a small Mennonite colony on the bank of the Tarlyk River. “The Diaries” represents the pictures of the Russians and Germans everyday life in the middle of the 19th century.
