Rock and kinds of rock

Rock music is a form of popular music with a prominent vocal melody accompanied by guitar, drums, and bass. Many styles of rock music also use keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, or synthesizers. Other instruments sometimes utilized in rock include harmonica, violin, flute, banjo and less common stringed instruments such as mandolin and sitar. Rock music usually has a strong back beat, and often revolves around guitar, either electric or acoustic.
Rock music has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll and rockabilly, which evolved from blues, country music and other influences. In the late 1960s, rock music was blended with folk music to create folk rock, blues to create blues rock and with jazz, to create jazz-rock fusion, and without a time signature to create psychedelic rock. In the 1970s, rock incorporated influences from soul, funk, and latin music. Also in the 1970s, rock developed a number of subgenres, such as soft rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock. Rock subgenres from the 1980s included synth-rock, hardcore punk and alternative rock. In the 1990s, rock subgenres included grunge-style rock, britpop, indie rock, piano rock, and nu metal.

Progressive rock bands went beyond the established rock music formulas by experimenting with different instruments, song types, and musical forms. The Who popularized the rock opera. Some bands such as Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, and Deep Purple experimented with new instruments including wind sections, string sections, and full orchestras.

Rock became popular in different countries of the world.

By the late-1960s, German audiences began listening to progressive rock bands from Britain and the United States. During this period, avant-garde musicians in Germany were playing electronic classical music. These German avant-garde musicians adapted their electronic instruments for a style of music that blended progressive rock and psychedelic rock sounds.
In Italy progressive rock was also popular in the 1970s.

Pakistan has a long history of rock music. Pakistani progressive rock is slowly gaining popularity and more bands are making this kind of music.

There are a few rock bands in India, like Silk Route or Euphoria. The music is mainly targeted at young adults and is gaining more acceptance in recent years.

In Turkey progressive rock began to grow with Barış Manço in the mid-1970s. His symphonic-progressive rock album 2023, released in 1975, is one of the most important albums in Turkey. He made a contribution to the other genres of rock music with his other albums and became a famous rock star in Turkey.

Rock has deep roots in Russia too. Everyone in our country knows such groups as the Time Machine, the Aquarium, the DDT, the Kino and others. The names of their leaders are familiar both to teenagers and adults: Andrei Makarevich, Boris Grebenshchikov, Yuri Shevchuk, Victor Tsoi. We are glad to realize that our Bashkir rock musicians contribute to Russian rock. I think everyone knows Zemfira or Lumin.

  1. Учитель: Thank you very much. Now let’s listen to the students who want to tell us about the first known rock group – the Beatles.

The Beatles

At the end of 50th – the beginning of 60th young people decided to build their own world, their own culture. They created their own music, which was based on the music of black Americans and rock-n-roll. The symbol of the new youth movement and the synonym of its culture became the Beatles, an English group from Liverpool.

The old friends John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison started performing in their hometown in 1959 and later in Western Germany. In 1961 they made their first record and met Richard Starkey, who later became Ringo Starr and joined their group. Officially the Beatles began in 1962 when their manager Brian Epstain signed the contract with the recording company “Parlophone”. The Beatles made numerous concert tours, recorded their songs, appeared on radio and TV and in two musical films. They became the role models of the young generation. The most popular songs of this period are “Love me do”, “All my loving”, etc.

The Beatles brought together an appealing mix of image, songwriting and personality, and achieved an unprecedented level of worldwide popularity. After their initial success in the UK, the Beatles launched a large-scale US tour to a frenzy of fan interest known as Beatlemania, which spread worldwide. In 1964 the Beatles met an American singer Bob Dylan and changed their attitude to their songs. They brought social and protest notes to their work. “A hard day’s night”, “ Help”, “Give peace a chance” and some other songs proved it.

The Beatles protested not only in their songs but also in their life. They didn’t want to serve Beatlemania and stopped every concert activity and focused on recording of the new songs. The albums “Revolver”, “Sergeant Pepper Lonely Hearts (Club Band)”, “White album”, “Let it be” appeared in 1967-1970. There are no plain songs in their albums, every song is perfect. Their joint work lasted only 10 years, but it is unvalued.

( The students sing a song “Yesterday”)

  1. Учитель: Another famous British rock band which deserves being told about is Queen.

Queen

Queen are an English rock band formed in 1970 in London by guitarist Brian May, lead vocalist Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor, with bassist John Deacon joining the following year. Queen rose to prominence during the 1970s and are one of Britain's most successful bands of the past three decades.

The band is noted for its musical diversity, multi-layered arrangements, vocal harmonies and incorporation of audience participation into their live performances. Their 1985 Live Aid performance was voted the best live music performance of all time in a BBC poll.

Queen had moderate success in the early 1970s, with the albums Queen and Queen II, but it was with the release of Sheer Heart Attack in 1974 and A Night at the Opera the following year that the band gained international success. All of the band's studio albums reached number one on numerous charts around the world. Since 1973, they have released fifteen studio albums, five live albums, and numerous compilation albums. According to Ohmy News, the band have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, including more than 32.5 million in the United States alone, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists.

Following lead vocalist Freddie Mercury's death and bassist John Deacon's retirement in the 1990s, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor collaborated with Paul Rodgers.

  1. Учитель: Now listen to their song “We are the Champions” and fill in the gaps some missed words.(Учащиеся прослушивают песню, вставляя пропущенные в припеве слова)

We are the champions, my friends,

We’ll keep on fighting to the end.

We are the champions, we are the champions,

No time for losers,

‘cause we are the champions of the world.

  1. Учитель: The next group will tell us about the most tragic rock band of the USA Nirvana and their leading singer Kurt Cobain.

Kurt Cobain and his group Nirvana.

Kurt Donald Cobain was born on the 20th of February 1967 in a small port town of Hoquam, state Washington. His family moved to a nearby town Aberdin when Kurt was only six month. Kurt’s family was numerous, he had 8 aunts and uncles. His father, a German in background, was an auto mechanic. His mother Wendy changed a lot of professions.

As a child Kurt was a very shy boy with artistic skills. He received some awards for drawing and design when he was a schoolboy. Although he didn’t have any chances for better life, his only passion was music. He began playing the guitar when he was 7 years old. And in 1975 he was a member of the school rock group.

During his childhood Kurt suffered from hyperactivity and depression. He was fond of rock music, listened to such famous American groups as “Kiss”, “Led Zeppelin” and others. Kurt became a fan of the local punk group “The Melvins” and made friends with the members of the group.

Meanwhile the wellbeing of Kurt’s family came to an end. His parents divorced, and the boy suffered very much. First he lived with his mother, then with his father traveling in a wagon. He finished high school in 1984and decided not to study anymore. His mother was against it and he left home.

Just at that time he began taking drugs and formed his own group “Nirvana”. Despite the fact that musical style of the group (grunge) wasn’t very popular they were a success. But Kurt wasn’t in peace with himself. On Friday, on the 8th of April 1994 he was found dead in his house. The police stated it had been a suicide.

  1. Учитель: Now let’s watch a video about Kurt Cobain’s death and listen to his song. You must answer the following questions after you have watched:

  1. When was Kurt Cobain’s body found?

  2. Who was worried because Kurt had been missing for 6 days?

  3. Who found the body?

  4. How old was Kurt when he died?

And you can sing together with Kurt one of his most famous and most beautiful song “The Man Who Sold the World”:

We passed upon the stairs, we spoke in walls and web

Although I wasn’t there, he said I was his friend,

Which came as a surprise. I spoke into his eyes.

I thought you died along, a long long time ago.

Oh no, not me,

We never lost control.

The face to face

Of a Man Who Sold The World.

  1. Учитель: Kurt Cobain influenced the young lovers of rock all over the world. And even in our town there are his fans who organized their own groups. Let’s listen about rock in Davlekanovo.

Rock in Davlekanovo

In our town Davlekanovo rock music is being developed and gone ahead. Only three and a half years ago there were no rock groups in Davlekanovo. There had been “Khugin” before but its members grew up. After them there appeared a group “Gvozdi”. They played music in the direction of punk rock. They had been playing together for more than 2 years before they departed. Davlekanovo audience liked to listen to famous hits but some young musicians of the group wanted to play their own songs. That was the main reason of the departure.

Last year there appeared new groups. They are RIP and KVINT. RIP have been playing for a year and have made good progress. The group consists of four members: Lukyanenko Nikolai, Vlasenko Andrei and Vitaly and Ageyev Marsel. They have appeared on different concerts in our town this year. RIP started playing punk rock but now they are changing to alternative rock. They have recorded their first album but only at the “home” studio of group “Junk”.

The group “Junk” consists of school leavers of school №1Tavliyarov Damir, Skripnikov Artem and Babich Andrei. The musical style of the group is difficult to determine. Some of their songs belong to hard-core, some to punk rock, but they are melodic and not very hard. They recorded their first album in 2007. The group participated in the concerts not only in our town but also in Rayevka and Belebei and was awarded a diploma for the participation in the first Festival of Youth Culture in Belebei.

What can we say in the conclusion? I’d like to wish our young musicians good luck, new talented songs, understanding and support of the audience.

  1. Учитель: So, our project is completed now. I think that you learned a lot while working on it and you deserve good and excellent marks.(Выставление оценок и подведение итогов урока)

  2. Учитель: Look at the screen, please. You can see different words. Choose those which best reflect your impression of rock.

Cheerful, gloomy, brilliant, difficult , pessimistic, boring, optimistic, merry, it makes me think, strung, mystical. Учащиеся выбирают эпитеты и записывают предложения с ними.
