Breastfeeding Breastfeeding is the feeding of an infant or young child with breast milk directly from female human breasts rather than from a baby bottle or other container. Babies have a sucking reflex that enables them to suck and swallow milk. Most mothers can breastfeed for six months or more, without the addition of infant formula or solid food. Breast milk has just the right amount of fat, sugar, water, and protein that is needed for a baby's growth and development. Because breastfeeding uses an average of 500 calories a day it helps the mother to lose weight after giving birth. The composition of breast milk changes depending on how long the baby nurses at each session, as well as on the age of the child. Benefits for the infant include: greater immune health, fewer infections, protection from SIDS , higher intelligence ,less diabetes, less childhood obesity , less tendency to develop allergic diseases , other long term health effects ,less overweight. Breastfeeding is a cost effective way of feeding an infant, providing nourishment for a child at a small cost to the mother. Frequent and exclusive breastfeeding can delay the return of fertility through lactation amenorrhea, though breastfeeding is an imperfect means of birth control. During breastfeeding beneficial hormones are released into the mother's body and the maternal bond can be strengthened. Breastfeeding is possible throughout pregnancy, but generally milk production will be reduced at some point. First find a comfortable position, either sitting upright, well-supported or lying down. Then turn your baby towards you with the head and shoulders opposite your breast, and the nose opposite your nipple. Support your baby with a hand across the shoulders not behind the head. Now brush your baby’s lips against your nipple to get her to open her mouth really wide, and then draw your baby to your breast quickly. If your baby is correctly positioned, there will be more of your areola showing above the top lip than below the bottom lip. Start each feed on alternate breasts. Let your baby decide when he or she has finished the first breast before switching to the second. Sometimes babies only need one breast at a feed. Mastitis Mastitis is what they call it when tissue in your breast becomes painfully inflamed. It generally affects one breast at a time. The area may be red, sore, hard to the touch, or unusually warm. The swelling may or may not be caused by an infection. Signs of an infection include chills, fever and fatigue. Mastitis that's not due to an infection may be caused by milk staying in the breast this is called "milk stasis" or plugged milk ducts. A breast infection may be caused by any of these as well as cracked nipples, which allow germs to enter the breast. Stress, fatigue, and being a first-time mom can increase your risk of mastitis. It can occur any time while you're breastfeeding. Try applying moist heat a few times a day, and nurse your baby frequently to keep the affected breast empty. In the meantime, you can take ibuprofen to ease the pain. If your symptoms don't improve within 24 hours of trying these measures, see your healthcare provider. She may prescribe antibiotics, rest, and pain relievers in addition to hot compresses. If you have an infection and it's diagnosed early, it's easy and quick to treat. You should start feeling improvement within 48 hours of starting antibiotics. Ignoring mastitis can cause complications. An untreated infection can lead to breast abscesses, which require antibiotics and surgery to drain the abscess. The best way to avoid mastitis is to get plenty of rest and eat a healthy, balanced diet while you're nursing. The more run down you are, the more susceptible you become. In addition, avoid letting your breasts become overly full or engorged. If your breasts are not empty after nursing or pumping, or you have a plugged duct, use warm compresses and massage to get the milk out. Avoid underwire bras and bras that are too small. It's important that you continue nursing through the inflammation. Although nursing may be extremely painful at times, you need to let your baby feed frequently to keep your milk supply flowing and avoid further blockage. Try applying warm compresses to your breasts for several minutes before each feeding. This should help stimulate your letdown reflex and make nursing more tolerable. If your baby doesn't empty the inflamed breast during each feeding, finish the job yourself with a breast pump. But don't rely on this solely to get you through the mastitis, as your baby can "pump" your breasts more efficiently than any device. Mastitis won't hurt your baby, though it can reduce the milk supply in the affected breast. Mastitis can increase the sodium (salt) content in the milk, so most providers avoid giving this milk to an infant in the intensive care nursery.
