Lesson 1

Цели и задачи:

  1. Тренировать учащихся в чтении текста «Pages from Dima’s Diary» с полным извлечением информации.

  2. Повторить ранее изученную и научить правильно использовать новую лексику по теме.

3. Повторить и закрепить ранее полученные знания учащихся по данной теме.

Оборудование:

  1. Учебное пособие «Совершенствуй свой английский».

  2. Раздаточный материал по новой лексике (лексические карточки).

Ход занятия:

    1. Hello! I think that all of you like holidays. Of course, every country has its own traditional holidays. As for me I like holidays very much. Most of all I like New Year’ Day, because it’s family’s holiday, and of course my own birthday. And what about you?

    2. - What Russian holidays do you know?

- What is your favourite Russian holiday?

- What is the favourite holiday of Yakut people?

- What other Yakut holidays do you know?

- Do you know any British or American holidays?

  1. OK. Now let’s read the text “Paeges from Dima’s Diary”. We’ll read about our country’s holidays and how Dima’s family celebrates them.

  1. Now I’ll give you some cards with the dialogue and turn on our tape-recorder. Listen to this dialogue, translate and practise it.
Dialogue

The task: You are going to have a party. Invite your classmate. Give him/her your address and explain how to get to your house.

You: What are you doing tomorrow?

Classmate: Nothing special.

Y: We are having a party. I hope you can come.

C: I’d be very glad to come. Thank you. What time shall I come?

Y: Come around 5 if you can. And take down my address.

C: Wait a minute, please. I’ll get a pen… Yes, go ahead.

Y: I live at number 17, Lesnaya Street. My flat is 26.

C: Where is it?

Y: Oh, that’s easy. You could take a bus №3. Get off at the post-office. Walk to the corner and then turn to the right. You’ll see an old church. My house is opposite that church.

C: Thank you. Shall I bring some cassettes?

Y: That’ll be great. I know that music is your hobby.

C: OK. See you tomorrow.

Y: I’m glad you can come. Bye.

You are a student from Moscow school. You have to know more about Yakut national holidays. Please, talk with your friend from Yakutsk about it. Ask him some questions about his national holidays and tell him about your own Russian traditional holidays. (Women’s Day, May Day, Victory Day, Maslenitsa).

Student B


You are a student from Yakutsk. Your friend wants to know about your national holidays. Answer his questions and tell him about yhyakh, the Republic’s Day, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day. Then ask your friend about his national holidays.



  1. Now let’s read and translate the text “Decorating the tree” and then you’ll act it using these pictures.

Decorating the New Year’s tree

Right after lunch on Thursday, the boys goy ready to decorate the New Year’s Tree. Their father had put the tree up in the living room earlier in the day.

As the boys unpacked the boxes of decorations, Vanya asked, “Where’s your sister Olga? She’s going to help us, isn’t she?”

“She went to the library,” Kolya said. “She’ll help us when she gets home.”

“What’ll we do first?” Vanya asked.

“We’d better put the lights on first,” answered Kolya. “The old ones are in this box. The new ones are still in that package over there.” He took the old lights out of the box and began to wind them around the tree.

Vanya opened the package of new lights and took them to Kolya. Kolya wound them around the tree too.

“OK, they’re all on the tree now,” said Kolya. “Turn them on, Vanya. Let’s see how they look.”

Vanya turned the lights on. “Oh, they’re beautiful!” he said. “This tree is almost as bright as the one downtown.”

“Fine,” said Kolya. “Now you’d better turn them off again so we can finish decorating the tree.”

Next, the boys hung coloured glass balls on the branches of the tree. “We’re almost finished,” said Vanya. “If Olga doesn’t come home pretty soon, she won’t be able to help us at all.”

Just then Olga came in. “You’ve already finished decorating the tree!” she exclaimed. “I wanted to help you!”

“You can still help us,” said Kolya. “You can put the star on the top. Here. Stand on this chair.”

Olga put the star on the top of the tree. Then she got down off the chair and carried it to the other side of the room. “The tree looks beautiful!” she said. “It’s the best one that we’ve ever had!”

“It was fun to decorate it,” Vanya said.

I. Hello! Now we know that there are very many different holidays and every nation celebrates them in its own way. But there are some immortal things. I’ll name these things and you should try to guess the name of holiday.

II. Love to women and mothers – the 8th of March, Mother’s Day

Respect to heroes – Victory Day, the 23rd of February

Love and respect to our fathers – Father’s Day

Trust in God – Easter, Christmas

  1. And now I’ll read you a text. Listen to it and then tell me who is the heroe of this text.

APRIL, 12

On April 12, 1961, at seven minutes past nine in the morning, Moscow time, the sputnik-spaceship “Vostok” was launched into space with a man on board. It was launched from Baikonur cosmodrom in West Siberia. At 10.55 after a round-the-earth flight the sputnik-spaceship landed near the village of Smelovka, Saratov region.

The first man who made the first space flight was a Soviet man.

He was the first man who could see with his own eyes that the Eearth is round.

This flight opened up a new page in the history of the conquest of space.

Do you know this man? Yes, his name is Yuri Gagarin. And now look at these cards with new words and try to guess their meaning. (Учащиеся читают новые слова и выражения и пытаются «угадать» их значение).

And now listen to the text once again and tell if these sentences are true or false.

    1. My parents gave me a great present – a mobile telephone. They think that I’m safer if I have a mobile. But my parents made me promise that I wouldn’t spend a lot of time and money sending texts and would turn it off in classes. Of course, I promised.

    2. I adore giving presents. Though I have never been good at finding them in advance. I have one friend who buys gifts in the week after Christmas for the following year. But as for me, I rush around at the eleventh hour to do my Christmas shopping.

    3. It’s fun buying gifts for everyone. One problem is that you never have enough money. I get some money from my parents, but it’s not enough. So I can never buy what I want for my parents and friends. What exactly? Maybe, perfume for mum… Maybe a fluffy toy for my girlfriend.

          1. Hello! I think that now we know very much about holidays. So we’ll start our lesson from guessing riddles. Listen to the tape-recorder and then name the holiday.

II. 1) This holiday is celebrated as in Russia as in England. On this day you can meet someone who will try to pull your leg. Everybody likes to play jokes on this day. It is a day for fun. (April Fool’s Day)

2) It is a happy and nice holiday. On this day men give women flowers and presents, and do all the domestic work around the house. Sons and daughters help their mothers too: they make a cake, lay the table, wash the dishes after holiday dinner. (The 8th of March, Mother’s Day)

3) This holiday is very popular, especially with children. In every house there is a fir-tree. We like to decorate it with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and beautiful star on the top. It is a pleasant moment to get presents on this day. The presents are supposed to be sent by Father Frost and the Snow Maiden. (New Year’s Day)

4) This holiday has no fixed date. It is in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus. People greet each other by the words “Christ is risen” and the expected answer is “He is risen indeed”. People also paint eggs and give them to one another as a symbol of eternal life. (Easter)

5) It is a spring holiday. Usually it is warm during this day. A couple of years ago it used to be a great holiday in Russia. People used to go to demonstrations to show their solidarity with the working class all over the world. They would sing patriotic songs and carry slogans and flags. (May Day)

6) This holiday is connected with the wonderful birth of Jesus Christ as it described in the Holy Bible. On that day more than 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. It falls on December 25 by the Catholic Church and on the 7th of January by the Orthodox Church. (Christmas)

III. OK. Very good. I think that among these holidays you have your favourite one. Can you tell us about it? I think it will be not so easy. So to help you speak on this topic I give you topical patterns. (Ребятам предлагается текст-образец по теме «Мой любимый праздник».)

The 2nd group: You meet the group of tourists from the USA. They want to know about Russian national holidays. Please, tell them about the most popular holidays in our country and answer their questions.

  3. Now I’ll give you some cards with different situations. You should read the task very attentively and then act these situations.
Situations for individual work

1. Imagine you are a reporter who has a task to write an article about one Russian or Yakut holiday. What holiday are you going to write about and why?

2. The British TV center invites you to take part in the programme “Russian national holidays”. You are to speak on one holiday, but it must be your favourite one. Explain to the TV viewers why you like it most of all.
Make them like this holiday as much as you do.
Situation for group work

Student A

You are a famous journalist of the magazine “Leisure Time”. You should interview some famous Russian people to find about their favourite holidays. These people are the singer, the writer, the politician, and the young actor.

Student B


You are a famous Russian singer You should answer famous British journalist’s questions about your favourite holiday. You haven’t got a family, so you like all holidays, because on holidays concerts of pop-singers are very popular.

Student C


You are a famous Russian writer of detective stories. You should answer famous British journalist’s questions about your favourite holiday. You love your family very much (your wife, two daughters and a son, your parents). So your favourite holidays are birthdays of your relatives, the 8th of March, the Victory day.

Student D

You are a famous Russian politician. You should answer famous British journalist’s questions about your favourite holiday. You think that there are too many holidays in our country and you don’t like this fact, because people get into the habit to rest. Your favourite holiday is only New Year’s Day.

Student E

You are young Russian actor. You should answer famous British journalist’s questions about your favourite holiday. Your favourite holidays are New Year’s day, April fool’s Day and your own birthday.



  1. At home you should find more information about British and American holidays. We’ll talk about holidays and traditions of these two countries and compare them with Russian ones.
