- For several lessons we have been speaking about environmental problems of our town, our region, of our country. Can you name the main ecological problems we face daily? У ч е н и к и :
We suffer from pesticides in our food.
We face the risk of a nuclear accident and of a chemical works explosion.
Acid rains and destruction of wild life are also a serious problem.
We drink water which is poisoned and unfit for drinking.
The depletion of natural resources is another alarming problem. A great amount of various natural resources are misused.
Citizens of large cities suffer from noise, pollution and stress of our life.
Lots of animals, birds and plants have disappeared from our forests. Many species are extinct.
On the whole, nature is under threat. Our forests, rivers and lakes are sacrificed because people are greedy. They exploit nature and its resources foolishly.
etc.
У ч и т е л ь :
How would you characterize the ecological situation in Russia?
У ч е н и к и :
alarming
awful
terrible
irrecoverable
urgent
serious
У ч и т е л ь :
Are only ecological problems so serious? Read and translate the words by V. Rasputin… Do you agree that the danger of destruction of culture is as urgent as the ecological issues? Are these problems connected with one another?
The story “The Smile” by Ray Bradbury proves this connection. Let us remember the plot of this story.
У ч и т е л ь :
Now let’s look through the text and find the words that characterize the place where everything happens, the time, the people in this story. Write out the words the author uses to describe these.
У ч и т е л ь :
And among these disgusting people in this awful place we see a boy. He is the only one who we sympathize with. Why?
The painting is the only beautiful thing in the whole story. And the boy is the only one who sees this beauty and who wants to save it, or just a piece of it – the smile. He saved a piece of this beautiful picture and the beautiful smile of “hers”, the beautiful smile of Mona Lisa prevented him from taking part in the awful destruction of the picture, of the beauty and saved his soul.
“SOMEONE’LL COME SOME DAY. SOMEONE WITH A HEART. SOMEONE WITH A SOUL FOR PRETTY THINGS. MIGHT GIVE US BACK A KIND OF CIVILIZATION, THE KIND WE COULD LIVE IN IN PEACE… IT’LL BE DIFFERENT…”
Can art save people’s souls? Is our soul under threat nowadays? Are moral values disappearing? Do we suffer from the destruction of our culture? Who is to blame? Why is it important to save culture? What can help us improve the situation? Who can help us? What should we do to save our souls?
