Ход урока

  1. T: You are invited to participate in the conference devoted to environmental problems « We and Our Environment » . We invite the citizens of St. Petersburg , specialists and educators to join it and share their views on the urgent global and local ecological problems.

  2. The Chairman: Today we’ll have to give a general idea of the ecological situation on our planet. Our planet is on the verge of a Global Ecological Catastrophe , so we have to highlight the most dangerous tendencies that have deadly consequences for us. Some people live in a town environment and the other -in a country one. The air we breathe, the soil on which we stand and the water we drink are all parts of our environment. Now Man is beginning to realize that environment is not just his own town or country, but the whole earth. Whether Man survives or not, depends on his ability to live in harmony with his environment. Now let’s look at this diagram.

About two hundred years ago Man lived in harmony with nature, but now it’s a dramatic situation. We have a lot of problems. ( a 2 minute talk on the greatest threats to the world’s environment)

  1. Reporter: Can you give a more detailed picture of these problems?

  2. Scientist : We have been monitoring air pollution round the world for 8 years, we measure two things: the amount of sulphur dioxide (SO 2) in the air and the amount of suspended particles, in other words smoke. Sulphur dioxide is produced when fossil fuels such as gas, oil and petrol are burnt. Rain washes it out of the air but this creates 'acid rains' which pollute water supplies, damage crops, forests and buildings and may also affect people's health. Water pollution has become a serious problem in many seas and rivers.

  3. Reporter: Are all big cities equally affected by the pollution?

  4. Scientist: The cities most affected by sulphur dioxide are Milan, Prague, Santiago and San Paulo. But some cities with the reputation for clean air get worse in winter. Helsinki, for example, becomes one of the cities with the most sulphur dioxide content in the air in winter. This must be because of the great increase in fossil fuel and wood burnt to heat the buildings. Glasgow and Warsaw suffer in the same way.

  5. Reporter : Does the pollution of the air depend on the part of the world, where the city is situated?

  6. Scientist : In accordance with our investigations in some hot countries strong sunlight can change the exhaust gases from automobiles into stronger pollution. There may be desert dust in the air mixed with smoke.So there is some dependence on the climate. And such cities as Teheran. Baghdad, Delhi, Calcutta are among the smokiest cities.

You are a reporter from a newspaper…… and you are present at the conference “We and Our Environment”. You have a task to write a report about the problems of pollution. You ask a famous scientist , a member of the Environment Protection Committee Mr/Mrs Smith. Ask him/her about:

  • Kinds of pollution

  • Causes of pollution

  • Results of pollution

  • Who suffers because of it

  • Possible problems

Remember to:

    • Be polite and active

    • Ask all the questions

    • Find out as much information as possible

    • Finish the conversation properly



Role-play card 2 (for a scientist)

You are a famous scientist, a member of the Environment Protection Committee Mr/Mrs Smith. and you are present at the conference “We and Our Environment”. You are asked a number of questions covering the points:


  • Kinds of pollution

  • Causes of pollution

  • Results of pollution

  • Who suffers because of it

  • Possible problems

Remember to:

    • Be polite and active

    • Answer all the questions

    • Give as much information as possible

    • Finish the conversation properly



  1. Reporter: Pollution is not the only ecological problem of the Earth. What are other ecological problems?

10. The Chairman: It’s a disaster and it's still happening. But not all the news is bad. In the last 20 years there has been a Green revolution. Today, many scientists and world leaders realise that the Earth is in danger. It's really very simple. Either we stop killing the Earth or we will kill ourselves. We need a cleaner, healthier planet. Millions of ordinary people- both young and old - understand this too. Some of them belong to Green organisations in countries all over the world.

( a 2-minute talk on the problem: What should be done to stop worsening of the ecological situation?)


  1. Homework: a debate on a simulated situation (pair work)


You are invited to work in the commission on environmental problems. Which problem do you consider to be the most important for StPetersburg. You have 4 options:

    • Industrialization

    • Waste problems

    • Flooding

    • Water pollution

Remember to :

  • Discuss all the options and choose one that you both consider to be the most serious problem

  • Take an active part in the conversation and be polite

  • Come up with ideas and give good reasons

Задачи урока:

Учебные: развивать разговорные навыки (монологической и диалогической речи), чтения и аудирования Развивающие: развивать способность к аналитическому мышлению, к обобщению, анализу, логичности; развивать умения выражать своё отношение к обсуждаемому вопросу, выяснить и обсудить мнение и отношение собеседника к обсуждаемому вопросу.
