Ход урока

  1. Warm-up Discussion

T: Ladies and Gentlemen, May I welcome you as participants of our project-conference «Education for a Happier Life»! Some world known educators and teachers come to our conference. The motto of the conference invites its prospective participants to focus on any aspect of secondary education. Today we’ll speak about education as a tool of making our life more productive, successful and happier. We have two working groups.

We consciously know nothing at birth. Everything we know came through a process of education-through other people teaching us.

T: So what does modern education mean to us?

The groups are expressing their ideas and thoughts on this problem.

2. Main Body.


  • Discussion (a group work)

T: Our conference looks at education because « the fate of empires depends on the education of youth» (Aristotle, 384-322c. ВС, Greek philosopher). We have a lot of problems for our debates and I'd like the working groups to think and express their ideas on some problems.

The groups are given cards with different problem situations. They read and discuss the problem within the group (1 minute), then they share their ideas and thoughts. ( содержание карт проецируется на экран)


Group 1 : Situation No 1.

Speak about the importance of being a well-educated person. Do you think good education should prepare you for life in general or for a particular job? Give your reasons.





Group 2: Situation No 2,

Some people say that school is your second home. Prove your point of view. Do you think that school is the right place for all children to learn? Give your reasons.




Group 1; Situation No 3,

In Russia , the last few years have seen increasing interest in learning foreign languages. What are the reasons for learning foreign languages? Give your reasons.




Group 2; Situation No 4.

The new educational standard in Russia emphasizes the importance of new forms of examinations. What do you think about changes in teaching and what innovations are you expecting? Give your reasons.

T: We asked the students of our school to investigate if they were satisfied or dissatisfied with education receiving in our school.

You and your mother/ father/ friend are thinking of what foreign language you could learn at school. Discuss the following options and choose one you both like most of all.

Italian

Italian is spoken only in Italy. Italian language isn’t as easy as it seems to be. There isn’t any special Italian course for schoolchildren.

We love opera and Italian operas are the most beautiful. We have some Italian programmes on our TV. You have a very experienced teacher at your school.

Japanese

It usually takes about six years to learn to read Japanese. It would be a great problem to have language practice with native Japanese speakers in our town. Your memory needs training before you start learning Japanese.

I know nobody who could say any Japanese words. I’ll be proud of you. Practical and economical contacts between our countries are growing and learning Japanese will be of great demand. You’ll be able to translate books on ikebana; it’s my hobby!

Latin

It’s a dead language nowadays. You’ll be able to read only Latin proverbs and quotations. You love singing and there isn’t any song in Latin.

If you learn Latin, it’ll help you in learning Italian. You’ll learn a lot about Roman culture. You’ll be able to read doctor’s prescriptions.

German

I can’t help you in doing your homework because I know only few words in German. I don’t like it how German words sound. German grammar is very difficult.

You have a very nice teacher at school. There are a lot of German books in our home library because our grand-grand-father was a German teacher. German is spoken in most European countries.


  • Discursive Talk.

T: Nowadays there are a lot of talks about the State Russian Exam. Some people are for such kind of examination, others are against. What do you think of it? One group speaks for it, another- against it.

Taking Exams


FOR

  • exams encourage students to study

  • exam grades give students an idea of their progress

  • exams are the quickest way of testing students

  • some students are really lazy and need pressure, they only work hard when they’ve got an exam

  • exams should be combined with continuous assessment

AGAINST

  • exam results may depend on how you feel on a particular day

  • if students get nervous, they will not perform as well as they could

  • students can cheat and get a mark they don’t deserve

  • if students run out of time, they cannot show what they know

  • some students do well in exams simply because they have got good memory

Interviewer: Welcome to another edition of The Sunday Papers. On today's programme, we'll be speaking with Mr Alistair

Gunn, an animal protection activist from a group called Save the Animals. Welcome, Alistair.

Alistair: Thank you, Leslie.

Interviewer : Alistair, what is Save the Animals' current project?

Alistair: Well, our main goal is to educate the public about the dangers that many species are facing, and to protect these

animals where possible. One of the main problems we're concerned about now is habitat destruction. The human population

is growing, and is crowding animals out of their natural homes.

Interviewer: What can be done about that?

Alistair: Firstly, financial support for poorer countries is important. People in poor countries are destroying jungles and

forests because they need farmland to feed their families. Therefore, jungles and forests need to be protected so that animals

can continue to live in their natural habitat.

Interviewer: Will that stop the threat to animals?

Alistair: No, it's only one part of the solution. Pollution is another problem. We're trying to identify those industries which

are doing the most damage, and encourage them to use cleaner methods of production. Also, we're trying to educate the

public about the importance of recycling , since recycling helps save trees and other natural resources. Everyone should do

their part to save animal habitats.

Interviewer: Is there anything else your group is working on?

Alistair: Yes. Illegal hunting must be stopped, too. This can be accomplished only if governments introduce harsher

punishments for illegal hunters. We're also trying to raise public awareness about endangered species and encourage people

to stop buying products which are made from these animals.

Interviewer: Unfortunately, that's all the time we have today. Thank you for telling us about the work of Save the Animals,

Alistair, and I wish you every success.

  • animals used for scientific research

  • animals killed for their fur or skin

  • animals killed for food

Remember to:

  • be polite and active

  • ask all the questions

  • find out as much information as possible

  • finish the conversation properly

1. Warm-up discussion. (Topic: Animal Intelligent)

T: Today we have a debate-lesson. Our subject is " Us and Animals". We'll cover 4 main problems:

  • Animal Intelligence

  • Animals in Danger

  • Animals' Rights

  • Our Pets

First let's compare and contrast humans and animals.

*T: Say what human beings and some animals (apes) have in common and what things make humans different from animals.

T: So, animals can solve different problems

*T: Say a few words about animal intelligent, how you understand it. Can you give some examples to show it?
2. Main part.

  • Discursive Talk (Topic: Our Pets)

T: Humans and animals have much in common; maybe for this reason a lot of people enjoy keeping pets at home.

*T: Say what is good about keeping animals at home and what kind of animals we can keep.

T: So, a lot of people keep either a dog or a cat. Let's have a discursive talk.

Is' group: You are cat-lovers and you speak about the advantages of keeping a cat at home.

2nd group: You oppose, because you are dog-lovers and you speak about good points of having a dog and bad points about keeping a cat.

*T: Which make better pets- dogs or cats?

  • Opinion Talk/Discussion Talk (Topic: Animals' Rights)

T: We have spoken about the domestic animals, but there are a lot of wild animals. Where can we see them? Let's watch a short section of the video film about the London Zoo and then discuss the problem:

Animals in the Zoo are well fed and taken care of, so they are happier than in the wild.

Then I'd like you to present either an opinion talk or a discussion talk.

  • Listening and Speaking ( Role play: Animals in Danger)

T: Look at the table, then listen to a radio interview with an ecologist and say which solutions are mentioned.
