Why an exchange project?
Students of my group needed a 'real' communication task, the opportunity to communicate with other students.

That’s why I decided to encourage them making a video film about their speaking activity in the group. My idea was to make a video film and to post it to students in an English speaking country, as an exchange project.

The idea of the exchange project was introduced by me to the students and I also told them about the video programme.

I think that exchange projects offer students many benefits:

The opportunity for learners to communicate in a real way about their interests.

The opportunity to use a wide range of skills.

A variety of activities, which accommodate different learning styles.

A change from 'routine' class work.

A sense of achievement.

Immediately the students began sharing information with each other and in a week the topic of discussion was chosen. Traveling was the topic, which interested them most of all. . Then in groups they wrote a spidergram of the courtiers they had been to. They then talked about the countries they had enjoyed most: the land of Pharaohs, the unique blend of North Africa, southern Europe and Middle East. We would send the video to other teenagers in a different country since they would find the content informative and this would promote meaningful communication. For the video, the students would present their information in pairs and each pair could speak for 2-4 minutes.

Since the video programme would be in the form of an interview, it seemed appropriate to tell students to prepare questions. These questions would form the basis of the interview. Students were encouraged to include some questions based on factual information and some designed to elicit their personal opinions. Then each student prepared 3 or 4 questions, which they themselves would like to be asked, to which they knew the answers. This way, the students could focus on the delivery of the information rather than the content. In pairs, they checked each other's question forms and corrected any mistakes while I monitored.

After the initial language input (topic-based vocabulary and appropriate structures) and practice, we were able to complete the project within a week

Students then rehearsed in pairs and timed themselves. Then they rehearsed with different pairs and gave each other feedback. In fact, all the necessary research was conducted in the classroom. For some topics, geography, for example, the students needed to do some research. I monitored throughout, noted and corrected, any misuse of vocabulary or grammar.

I told the students that we would record ‘live’ lesson so if they made a mistake we should just carry on.

I introduced the programme, because I played the part of the interviewer and welcomed the students to the studio and they began talking about their travelling.

The other students asked the questions they had prepared. . As a result, the recording didn't take a long time. Each pair's interview took between 3 and 5 minutes to record a video so it took us around 30 minutes.

After the break we watched this film about ourselves and commented on the performance .The film was a success. We have done it!

The task of creating video exchange project benefited the students. They welcomed the opportunity to communicate and they were keen to share information about travelling. Moreover, they were motivated to use the target language and communicate effectively. After watching the video, it was clear that they were proud of their achievement, and so was I. Unfortunately, we found only our own school to send the video film to.

We would like to find a partner school to do another exchange project.

Lesson plan

Objectives: to master skills of monologue and dialogue, while creating video exchange project, to master skills of listening and understanding foreign language.

Warm-up

Teacher Dear friends! . The lesson Video exchange project is the most interesting. Our students will take part in shooting video film that deals with presentation about travel.

On behalf of the participants, it’s my honour and duty to introduce the students - Ann, Daniel, Alex, George, Peter, Kate, Boris, Dan and Eleanor. They are well-known travelers; thought travelling has always been dangerous. While traveling we can be bitten by poisonous snakes, or killed by wild animals. In spite of danger there is paradise in the world the courageous travellers would most like to go back to. Everyone remembers their favourite holiday.

Teacher-. To travel means to go on a journey and visit different places. Many people like travelling. Their trouble is that they don’t want to miss out on any chance. . People want to go everywhere and see everything and take every opportunity that comes. How about you?
T – When did people begin to travel?

Who were the firs travellers?

Where and why do people travel nowadays?

Why is it interesting to travel?

Have you ever travelled?

Do you like to travel?

Teacher: Now I’m going to ask you each to make a very short presentation for the students

Will you listen and decide which of the places described you would most like to visit.

Student1 - -Hello everybody. Glad to meet you. Some people can’t do without traveling. It’s very good that you are interested in discovering new places.

S- What places would you like to tell us about?

S1-(Dan) - I have been to many fascinating places but my favourite is Venice, which I visited a few years ago. Venice had everything – beautiful historic buildings, interesting museums and delicious Italian pizza!

S - What is the most memorable trip?

S1- I’ll never forget my trip in a gondola along the canals that Venice is famous for. It was so relaxing. Gondola is a narrow boat with curved ends that you move using a long pole. I’d love to go back there again soon, but this time with my friend.

S2(Ann) – My most memorable trip was last year when I visited the beautiful old “Silk Road” towns of Bukhara, Samarkand and Khiva. These are the towns in Central Asia

S - But what was you favourite town?

S2 - I think Bukhara was my favourite.I have seen ancient minarets for the first time there. Minaret is a tall tower that is traditionally part of a Muslim religious building where someone stands to call people to prayer I spent hours sitting in the shadow of ancient madrasas with amazing minarets, sipping green tea and chatting to the local people.

Presenter - - I wonder, can you speak Uzbek?

S2- No, I can’t. But even without a common language, it was really surprising how well we could communicate! The people were so friendly and relaxed. That’s why I’d like to return there.

S3(Alex)- I like holidays in the mountains or at the seaside, where I can be active. I’ve just returned from a wonderful two-week holiday on Peter Island in the Caribbean Sea. It was a very private place with good food and lots of exciting things to do. Of course, I’m at home in the water, so I really enjoyed the windsurfing and water-skiing

S - Windsurfing is a sport, isn’t it?

S3 – Yes, it’s a sport in which you move across water standing on a flat board with a sail that you can move. We also played a lot of volleyball on the beach and went for long bicycle rides around the island. It sounds rather an exhausting holiday, doesn’t it?

S-What kind of holiday would be boring for you?

S3 - For me a holiday without action would be boring. That’s why we’re planning to go back there next year.

Presenter -Where was your last trip to?
S4 (George)– I love the jungle. That’s why my last trip was to the Amazon, which is famous for its massive trees and exotic wildlife. The Amazon jungle is not a place for people who like to travel in luxury. I was often exhausted and sometimes terrified. One day I was suddenly attacked by an ocelot, whose picture I was trying to take.
S -How did you protect yourself and how did the ocelot look like?
S4- I had to protect myself with my camera tripod. Ocelots usually look like yellow-brown domestic cats, with black spots, but this one was much more frightening!

Despite the hardship and the danger, I know I’ll go back there again. It’s always satisfying to travel to places where so few others have been.

S – Where do you usually spend your vacations?

S5(Peter)- If I stay more than one or two days in the countryside I become bored. I spend most of my vacations and short breaks in cities. I think my favourite city is Sydney, where I went last year.

S - What do you remember?

S5 - I remember sitting in a cafe in the harbour, dining on a plate of fresh prawns, sipping a glass of juice and watching the boats in the clear blue water. And all the time the astonishing modern architecture of the Sydney Opera House was in view. I can’t think of a better way to relax. I’d go back there next summer if I could.

Representer -- let’s go on talking about your travelling

It is a modern trend making a journey into space isn’t it?

S-6- (Elenour) Yes, it is. And I have been living in space for over two days. It’s so difficult to describe the feeling I had while travelling in space. Orbiting the Earth is an extraordinary and unforgettable experience. It was incredible to look down on the Earth and see the sun rising behind it. I was amazed at how small and fragile it looked from space.

MS-What was shocking?

S-6 We still haven’t realized how unique and precious our planet is, that was shocking. Of course I’d love to visit space again, but I’d like others to experience it too.

S- Would you really fly to the moon?

S6-It’s my dream. I would if I could

Representer: Where do you spend your holidays?

S-7(Boris) I want to go everywhere and see everything. I take every opportunity that comes. I am still young but I don’t want to miss out on any chance.

S-What place is the best of all for you?

Last year I went to China. I was greatly impressed by the Great Wall of China. It runs for 6,700 kilometers from the east to the west of China. It is one of the greatest wonders of the world.

Representer :It’s interesting to know, why was it built?

S-7 The Great Wall was built in order to protect that country from different aggressors. The Great Wall of China is a Symbol of wisdom and bravery of the Chinese people.
Representer:
S-8(Kate) All my life I have been a skier- both downhill and cross country. The trouble with a skiing holiday however is that all it takes is one small accident to ruin everything. This year I was in the French Alps. Everything was going really well until the second day of a two week trip.

S-

But as I returned to the chalet a complete beginner lost control and crushed into me on the driveway. A cleanly broken ankle was the result, followed by three days in a French hospital and the rest of the holiday watching my friends having fun.

S-9(Daniel) I never took a holiday abroad. To be honest it is too expensive for my family. My hobby is ecotourism. I try to damage the environment as little as possible. I visit places of natural beauty in my native country and I usually travel on food or by bike, so there is no pollution. I stay in local houses and eat local food. My aim is to enjoy nature without polluting or destroying natural recourses. I follow the principles of eco-tourism :“Leave nothing behind you except footprints and take nothing away except photographs. Ecotourism is becoming popular and fashionable all over the world.
