Task 1. Key
Put the sentences in the right order. Play your part and tell the journalists what happened one early spring with you.

  1. On Saturday it began to rain so hard that I thought the sky would fall down. I thought it was great and I wanted the rain last forever because I didn’t want to have a math test on Monday.

  2. Linda’s words made me furious. You know rain can be a disaster. I listened to the daily weather forecast. It couldn’t make me calm. They promised a rainstorm.

  3. On Sunday it was still raining. When I went to the river the wind and the rain tore my clothes and hurt my face. I had never seen anything so wonderful. Instead of our quiet narrow river there was a roaring yellow lion running away down the valley.

  4. Though it was nearly afternoon it was misty and you could hardly see because of the rain. I drove the cows when I saw Linda and asked her to help with the calves.

  5. After tea it rained harder than ever. The wind howled around the house and in the distance we could hear the roar of the river.

  6. Linda went to bed early that night but Ben and I didn’t sleep at all. We tried to save our animals and birds. In the morning it was still raining.

  7. Our house was sitting on the island. I could see the water dancing around the legs of my favourite calf and in a moment it was gone. The hungry yellow river had swallowed it, then the cows. It was going to swallow us all!

  8. Our dining room was full of animals and birds. Some of the pigs were by the fireplace. There were a lot of chickens on the sofa. The ship was tied to the door of the veranda. Ann was frightened but tried to smile and cheer up us.

  9. It took me a lot of time to make hot drink because everything was wet. I hoped the water would go down soon but it didn’t. We had to get onto the table and sat there watching the water. Ben gave Linda a hug. Trying to calm her he said that we were having an adventure.

  10. That morning I woke up and looked through the window. It was still raining and there was a lot of yellow water down in the valley. I thought that Ben’s family were in trouble and went to see them.

  11. Their house was surrounded by the water. I saw Ben open the window and wave. Ann looked tired. Linda was frightened. Nobody talked much. We made our way through the yellow water to my house on high ground at the other side of the valley.

  12. Next day the water went down and we went back to the farm. I had to borrow money from the bank but I think we will be hard for a long time.

On Saturday it began to rain so strong that you could think the sky would fall down.

On Sunday it was still raining. The wind and the rain tore your clothes and hurt your face. Instead of the calm narrow river there was a roaring yellow lion running away down the valley. Though it was nearly afternoon it was misty and you could hardly see because of the rain. After tea it rained harder than ever. The wind roared around the house and in the distance you could listen the roar of the river. That night the Browns didn’t sleep at all. They tried to save their animals and birds.

On Monday morning it was still raining. The home was sitting on the island. The hungry yellow river had swallowed their cows. It was going to swallow them all. Their dining room was full of animals and birds. Some of the pigs were by the fireplace. There were a lot of chickens on the sofa. The ship was tied to the door of the veranda. Everybody was afraid but tried to smile and cheer up each other. While there is life, there is hope.

The Browns hoped the water would go down soon but it didn’t. They must get onto the table and sat there seeing the water. Trying to calm the girl Ben said that they were having an adventure…

Suddenly the Browns heard a motorboat. Now they were saved. It was their friend Ted Jackson, who lived on high ground at the another side of the valley.

Read the article aloud.
