3.1 Вводная беседа по основным моментам темы. Устройство на работу. Требования к работе. Оформление резюме (8 мин).

What is a job? (It is what we do regularly to earn money (most often), especially in a particular company or for a person. There are different types of jobs. On one hand, it can be full-time, i.e. a job that you do for at least the same number of hours a week as people usually work. A part-time job is a job you do for fewer hours a week than people usually do). And on the other hand – mental and physical.

Have you already had a job? Are you still working? Do you think it is important for a person to make a career? Which one would you like to have? (I always wanted to be …) Give the examples of full-time and part-time jobs?

Full-time jobs are: lawyer, manager, teacher, doctor, builder, driver, scientist, seller, pilot, engineer, cosmonaut, hairdresser, designer, dressmaker (tailor), baker, fireman, policeman etc.

I think during your students` life you may have already tried a part-time job. A lot of organizations need assistants in the summer. There you can be offered work to design sites, to look for information in the Internet, etc. Anyway, you have a chance to try to work! When trying a job you find out what you want and the inclinations you have.

You may try occupation of part-time jobs: taxi-driver, baby-sitter, shop-assistant, consultant in computers, designer of sites, promoter, distributer, guard, consultant in a phone company, photographer, DJ etc.

Where to work? Which of us hasn’t asked this question? And which of us hasn`t found an appropriate place in advertisement, announcement? It’s not easy, is it?

What is the first step?

St.1 Some people think that when you are a student, it’s too early to think about such things. Of course they are right in some ways, but I don’t agree with them completely. As to choosing a job, it’s the right age to get information. Students have more free time for example. They have the opportunity to prepare themselves for any activity. (Эльмира)

St.2 If a student is keen on computering, he may decide to connect his life with this science. In his spare time he can read a lot of specific literature, work in the Internet, and simply spend a lot of time learning how to work with a computer. It’s also possible for him to visit different sorts of computer classes, etc. This is the first step in defining what will be of his future job. (Даша)

And what is the second step?

St.3 The second step is consulting with friends or relatives working in this area. It’s always useful to get advice from an older and more experienced person. Our parents always take into consideration the main reasons for our choice: prestige, fashion, money, an opportunity to get a good job and later on a promotion. (Алина)

So, the main thing for students is to choose the area of activity. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You can try yourselfe in any areas you like. If you are offered to work as a promoter – try! It’s not the best job, but it isn’t the worst either. It gives you an opportunity to associate with people, to know their demands and tastes. This job can give you a basic knowledge of advertising. Well, who knows, maybe you`ll train yourself in PR-activity, for example. There is only one unchanging thing: every experience is useful.

And what about you? You`ll finish our Ufa State college of radioelectronics soon, I`d like to know what possibilities are open before you? Who will you be after finishing our college?

St.4 Our qualification by the diploma will be specialist in state municipal management. In other words we can be secretaries in tax-department, law-court, administration, economist, lawyer etc. So we should find out as much as possible about our profession: we may view a list of job offers, visit a likely place of work, get some information on working conditions, working hours, perspectives and salaries. (Лена)

As for me, I formulized some rules for a beginning worker. Here they are, but they are in uncorrect order, try to put them in appropriate place.

  • Do not expect too much from your first job.

  • Every mistake is more useful than success.

  • Do not depend on anybody except yourself.

  • Never let a job harm your health.

  • Be proud of the job you have.

  • Write down your job advantages and disadvantages. Analyse them.

  • Improve yourself constantly.

  • Try yourself out in various areas.

  • Do not wait for help – ask for it, or correct the situation yourself.

Now, let’s think of what you should do to get a job. (You should write a letter or fill in a form that will be sent to your potential employer, to be intervewed)

-Do not mix up employer and employee: employer is a person, a company or an organization that pays someone to work for them as a member of their staff and a employee is someone who is regularly paid for work.

- You should also send to the employer your CV, or Curriculum Vitae, which is a document giving details of your qualifications and the jobs you have already had. Normally, there are special rules for writing a CV. We also had a practice in writing CV. Show me your CVs. Who wants to introduce us your CV? What should a CV look like? At the top of your CV you should write your name, address, telephone number and your e-mail. Then date & place of birth, marital status, nationality, qualifications, employment history, languages and IT Skills. Also you can take into consideration your personal qualities and work style, creativeness, motivation, work requirements, goals, leadership style, self-education etc.

(St.5 reads her CV)

3.2. Аудирование и просмотр видеоролика “Applying for a job” с нацеливанием и обсуждение (12 мин).

  • Listen to four people talking about their approach to applying for a job. Take notes and match the people to the summaries below (Listening over cassette).

  • Which speakers do you agree with? Which approach do you think would be the most successful? Try to differentiate what you should and shouldn`t do when applying for a job.

You should be (have):

  • Self-confident

  • Willingness to learn

  • Loyalty

  • An easy person to work with

  • To show 1 or 2 weaknesses you want to improve

  • Be honest, specific

  • A desire to fulfill the potential of the background

  • Have a lot to offer and need an opportunity to show it

You shouldn`t be (have):

  • Over-qualified person

  • Falsely modest

  • To use such adjectives like “excellent”, “outstanding”

  • Don`t blame your current employers

  • Don`t give irrelevant information

  • Don`t sound negative

  • Don`t be vague

  • Don`t create a bad working atmosphere

Our students also had a try to applying for a job. Let`s watch a video and analyse it.

Which of the students have more chances to apply for a job?

Who was more confident?

Were some of the people negative? (Everybody was presentable, communicative, dynamic, neat, honest)

Who was worried? How do you guess about it?

So, go ahead to applying for a job, be attentive in what you do, how you speak, how you behave yourself, take into consideration all the advice which you know now. I`m sure you will have a success in it.

    1. Систематизация грамматического материала «Passive Voice». Выполнение упражнений по учебнику p.114 -115 (7 мин).

3.4 Причины увольнения с работы. Дискуссия по тексту «Prize winner fired» Ex.2 p. 62 (13 мин)

Now let`s consider an aspect that a person can be laid off? Why can an employee be fired? What are the reasons? Who have looked at the Labour Code?

Due to the Labour Code there are several reasons of firing: (Оксана)

  1. Retiring on a pension

  2. Moving to another city

  3. A disease preventing from the work

  4. Staff reduction

  5. Not passing test term

  6. Unsufficient qualification

  7. Revealing company`s secrets

  8. A lack of higher education

  9. Appearing at the work in a drunken state

  10. Absenteesm

  11. A personal will

Are there any ways to avoid it? (to keep the health, to pass test term successfully, to get sufficient qualification, don`t reveal company`s secrets, to get higher education, don`t appear at work in a drunken state, don`t miss workdays)

What other reason of firing have we already read about last lesson? Now I`d like to know how you remembered the content of the text “IBIZA PHONE-IN PRIZE WINNER FIRED”

(retellings of Лена, Фатима /Яна, Лиля)

Thanks for retelling and now a few questions.

-Do you think the sacking was justified?

( I think her sacking wasn`t justified because people should be allowed to take part in such activities if it surely happens not every day, if it happens in her spare time. In this case her employer even may congratulate her with it). (Аделя)

St. – And I disagree. I have the latest news because I had been there after this accident. Listen another side of this story….. (On two occasions in November Ms Nicola Williams, an employee in the assembly plant, was warned that using a mobile phone in work hours was against the company rules. Both these warnings were given by another supervisor, and were noted in her file. Then, in December, on a further occasion, she was given a written warning. Finally, On Friday, 12 January at 10.30 I was informed of a problem on the factory floor. When I arrived there, I found a lot of noise and shouting going on. Ms Williams was using participate in a radio phone-in programme. Apparently she had won a prize. I asked her to put the phone down immediately, and to come in to my office. I decided to terminate her employment, and in the presence of Ms Jones, my deputy, Ms Williams was told that she was being sacked. She became hysterical and abusive, and was asked to leave the factory immediately. She was informed that her possessions would be forwarded to her by post). (Настя)

  • Would it be possible in your country?

( To my mind, it is surely can happen in our country, because there are so many companies, firms and enterprises, so many people and accordingly there are different cases take place, because people spent the most part of their life at work) (Диана/Лена )

  • What advice would you give to Nicola?

(Firstly I would recommend Nicola to pay more attention on warnings, secondly, to entertain herself during the lunch break and thirdly, be responsible for her job and worth what she has in the present moment and of course don`t forget about her daughter). (Эльмира)

- Well, let`s discuss which of these candidates we should choose for our sales team.

- OK, let`s just summarize what we know about these two young people.

- Sure. First, there`s Sara Chambers. Yes, well she was born in London, but grew up in Frunkfurt. And the other is Mark Horder, right?

- Yes, he was born in States, eh, Colorado and came over here to do his university at the degree the university of Warick.

- I`ve quite impressed by Mark, it is suddenly a difficult decision. I like Sara, she so neat and presentable. She go down well with the clients.

- Yes, but she has not much sales experience, just a couple of months at Hamburg in a junior sales position.

- But it doesn`t matter. We can give her product training. She is self-confident and willing to learn

- OK. Remind me about her qualification.

- Sure. She has Advanced Certificate in Sales &Marketing.

- Mmm… Ok. To be frank, I prefer it Mark. He seemed to be quite dynamic.

- Mark? Dynamic? Well, I`m not so sure. He exaggerated about his linguistic skills. He said he could speak German and French, but his score over his test show he is really not know it fluently either. On the other hand, Sara`s bilingual in English and German. Mark seems to be … well, I`m not sure. He is not very modest.

- You may be right, but his sales record is impressive.

- Yes, but he has no Sales&Marketing Qualification at all. He just did it degree in Law and Business Studies at the university.

- Yes, but you don`t actually need sales qualification to be a good sales person. Do you?

- Fair enough. When did he start M&S?

- He join them early last year, so he`s been at least 12 months.

- And before it he worked for B&Q for 6 months. He didn`t stay long. Did he? That doesn`t show much loyalty or commitment. Look, he may even be…lazy. Can he use a computer?

- He is proficient in Access and other data bases programmes.

- Well, Sara is an excellent using Word and all the Microsoft Office applications. And her actual sales performance was outstanding.

- Yes, but that may just of beginning as a luck. Look, we need to go back to original job specification, we don`t really have an ideal candidate.

- All I can suggest is calling them both back for a second interview.

- Oh, no. I want refer ….much more.

- Well, we can give them an aptitude test.

- It will take too long. I suggest we make a decision this afternoon. After all in my view we should appoint…
