Ход урока

I Организационный момент

We need to learn some more new words to speak about the media. Then you will learn to differentiate the words that sound similar and to make your own dictionaries.

— Learn to pronounce the new words. Open your books at p. 68 see ex. 22. Repeat the words after me.

III. Речевая разминка

— Learn to use the new words. Do ex. 23, p. 68 in writing. Keys:

1. Do you think she'll manage to pass her Maths exam?

2. Sir, I've finished writing my tests. Can I quit?

3. During the World War II Russians proved their courage many times.

4. Teenagers are hard to manage. But our teacher does it quite successfully.

5. Radio proved to be the most common mass media.

6. Can you prove that you are right?

7. My mom is always at home. She quitted working last year.

— Read your answers.

— See ex. 26 on p. 68. Read the conversations. Translate them into Russian. Choose one of the dialogues and act it out.

— Last lesson we began with the pronunciation of words that sound alike. Can you name any of them?

— Now try yourselves. Open ex. 24, p. 68. Listen and read the words. Do the task under the letter b). Check your answers in groups of four.

Ход урока

I. Организационный момент

— Today you will listen and watch much. We are going to revise some grammar and learn to use it in your speech.

II. Фонетическая разминка

— Begin with the tongue twister. Look at the blackboard. Listen to my reading.

When a twister twisting would twist him a twist, For twisting a twist three twists he will twist; But if one of the twists untwists from the twist, The twist untwisting untwists the twist.

— Translate it. Read the tongue twister slowly after me. Train reading it in pairs. Then read the tongue twister in a natural manner. And then try to read it as quickly as you can. What sounds do you hear more often? ([t],[w], [i], [s],[rj].)

— Name other words with these sounds. Примерный ответ:

[t] — try, tongue, two, tornado, star, etc. [w] — what, when, where, why, weather, etc. [i] - it, ill, in, still, till, etc. [s] - space, spaceship, save, spacesuit, star, etc. [rj] — monkey, uncle, morning, evening, writing, etc.

— Look at your cards. Read the definitions and say what it is. На карточках:

1. A short informative film describing and praising some product.

2. A serial about people's relationships especially love and friendship.

3. A film about nature or a historical event with real people in it.

4. A TV programme where people discuss a problem.

The media with the help of which people communicate with each other or can find the necessary information.

6. New information about sports presented in a short TV programme.

7. A programme about weather.

8. An intellectual programme with a lot of questions on different topics.

Один ученик отвечает, остальные соглашаются или не соглаша-с ним, используя выражения «Yes, she/he is right», «I'm afraid ilii /lie is not right».

IV Обучение речи

Do you like quizzes? Is it difficult to answer the questions? Listen to the dialogue where the speakers answer the questions of a quiz. Listen to it and say what the fourth question was. (The fourth question was "Do you like salad?")

Open your books at p. 69, ex. 28. Listen and read the dialogue. Now work in pairs. Make up a dialogue. Start with the questions in ex. 29, p. 69. Change the first dialogue to make your own one. Act it out. Listen to your classmates and say which dialogue you like most. Примерные вопросы:

What kind of magazines do you prefer?

Do you look for specific information or just watch photos?

Do you think teen magazines are useful?

Do you think it is good when magazines give us some advice?

Do you follow the advice given in the magazines?

Do you like to do psychological tests?

VI Обучение грамматике

As I have promised you, we are going to deal with grammar. Read the information in ex. 30, p. 69. Use the example and malce up your own sentences. The chart will help you.

- Use your imagination and complete the sentences in ex. 31, p. 69. Do it individually in writing.

- Learn to use the structure. Watch the video. Complete the dialogue in ex. 32, p. 69. Before you do it try to guess the answers.

Keys:

- Do you like working? Yes, I do. I like the Royal Family very much. Do you like opera? No, I don't. I'm a very nice person. No, you're not.

- What kind of a person is Martin? What about you? Are you a good person? Do you like quizzes? What do you think of them?

- We will continue at the next lesson.

- So, was it difficult to understand the dialogue? What kind of a person is Martin? Do you mind having a quiz at every lesson?

Ход урока

  1. Организационный момент

We will start our lesson with a test. Then you will learn to make up a quiz and use it in a dialogue.

  1. Фонетическая разминка

We begin with pronunciation to repeat the words you learnt at

home. Look at the blackboard. Read the words in transcription

I. Организационный момент

— Our theme today is "Do You Read Newspapers on Sundays'' What do you think we are going to speak about? (I think we an going to speak about newspapers.)

— You're perfectly right. You will read the text and learn what typ< of newspapers there are. Besides, you will learn to talk about yom favourite newspapers.

— Let's begin with the tongue twister. Let's revise one of them. .

— As for the newspapers I would like you to answer the main quest i< > 11 of the lesson: "Do you read newspapers on Sundays?" (Yes, I do I read newspapers on Sundays and every day /No, I don't. I neve i read newspapers.)

— If you want to know what types of newspapers there are then read the text in ex. 34, p. 70. First study the task. Now that you have read the text answer the questions.

Примерный ответ:

a) National newspapers express a political opinion. Local newspaper contain a lot of advertisements, news and information about films, concerts other things that are happening in the local area.

b) Daily newspapers are published on every day of the week excepi Sunday. Sunday newspapers are published only on Sunday Besides, they are larger than daily newspapers.

c) Quality/serious newspapers have many detailed articles aboui national and international events. Tabloids are smaller in size, have more pictures and shorter articles about less important events or about the private lives of well-known people.

IV. Обучение речи

  • Give the examples of every kind of the newspapers in Russia Which of them do you (your relatives) prefer reading? What kind of information are you interested in?

(Continue the discussion in pairs. Answer the questions in ex. 35, p. 70. Report to the class. Begin with the words: "We think that..."

  1. Обучение диалогической речи

learn to use the new information in your speech. First read the dialogue in ex. 36, p. 70 and say what the Greens do on Sundays. (The Greens read The Sunday Times.)

Have you ever read The Sunday Times or The Sunday Telegraph! ( Yes, I have/ No, I haven't)

I ook through the dialogue again and offer your changes. What can you change in the conversation?

Act out the dialogue.

Watch the video "We play golf and say what else people do at the weekend. (The Greens usually play tennis on Saturdays, and

they work in the garden and read The Sunday Times on Sundays. The Browns usually play golf on Saturdays, and they work in the

garden and read The Sunday Telegraph on Sundays.)

What about your family? Discuss this question in groups of four.

Then report to the class what the Ivanovs or the Petrovs do on Saturdays and Sundays.

Now watch the video again then act out the conversation using the information about your classmates' families.

At home prepare a short story about your favourite or any Russian newspaper.

— Today you will learn to read the articles quickly and try to guess the contents of the articles looking at their headings.

II. Фонетическая разминка

— Let's begin with the previous tongue twister. Look at thel blackboard. Complete it with necessary words.

— Now try not to look at the blackboard. Recite the tongue twister as quickly as you can. Who is the best actor?

— I remind you that we speak about the media. What types of the media do you know? Which of them do you prefer? Why?

— Now look at the photo on p. 70. Say if you agree with my sentences. Use the expressions from the blackboard.

- Study the list of news possible in ex. 38, Here you see the headlines. Guess which of them they are. Discuss in pairs.

— Now you are ready to read the articles. See ex. 40, p. 71. Look through the articles quickly. Guess their headlines from ex. 38, p. 70.

Keys:

1. "Who Knows Where You'll Travel? \

2. "False Starts".

3. "Foundation Gets a Home".

— Answer the question in ex. 41, p. 71. Explain your choice.

Примерный ответ:

The first article contains local news as it explains for teenagers where to apply for the necessary information.

The second article contains international news as it is about relations between two countries.

The third article has national news as it is about a foundation which is necessary for the Russian people.

— Read the articles carefully. Let's discuss them. Look at the task of ex. 42. So, your task is to find the international words. Say them in a chain. Others must translate them very quickly. For example, Vova says "planning", Kate says «планирование».

PI -> P2 -> P3 -»P4.

— The questions under the letter b) should be answered now. Work in pairs, please. Report to the class what you think about the problem of choosing the career.

Примерный ответ:

We should start thinking about our careers as early as we can because we must prepare for special exams to enter institutes. We must be ready for the future.

  • I have heard of the special centres which help teenagers to plan their career. I would ask such questions as " How could I define what my career must be connected with?", "Are there any special tests to define my preferences?".

— Pass over to the second article. Put the phrases from ex. 43 on p. 71 into the sentences they were taken from, see the example. (Britain preferred to be safe from Europe while the European countries were fighting. The two countries which were building the tunnel from each end finally met in the Tunnel in 1994.)

— The lesson is coming to an end. At home continue working on the last article.
