Ход урока

I. Организационный момент

— Today you will try to be journalists. You will learn to write an article. But first we shall check up your homework.

II. Фонетическая разминка

— As usual, we begin with pronunciation. Open your workbooks at p. 40. In ex. 1 you see some words. Some of them are pronounced with the sound [s], others — with the sound [0]. Learn to differentiate the sounds. Complete the columns with the appropriate words. Do it in writing.

- Do it in a turn. Now if you are ready read the words correctly. Sasha will read only the words with the sound [6], Vova will read only the words with the sound [s].

  • OK, let's revise the information from the articles. Open your books now, look through the texts again and say if my statements are true or fa

7. Finally the work was completed in 1994. (You ar&perfectly right. Finally the work was completed in 1994.)

8. The Gorbachev Foundation got a home on Leningx-adsky Prospect in Moscow. (You are perfectly right. The Gorbachev Foundation got a home on Leningradsky Prospect in Moscow.)

9. It was founded to help businessmen. (I'm afraid you are not right. It was founded to support research and teacher training financially and to solve environmental problems!)

IV. Проверка домашнего задания

- Well, I see that you know the text quite all right. What about your homework? Please, read your variants of the sentences. We will discuss all of them and choose the right one (ex. 44, p. 71).

Примерный ответ:

1. Former Soviet President finally got a home for foundation. Or: Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev got a home for his foundation.

2. A video in English — looking very like a CNN advertisement — was shown to the guests.

3. The Gorbachev Foundation offers financial assistance for research and teacher training.

- I see that you are tired. Stand up, please. Let's have a rest.

VI. Обучение письму

- You have read and discussed three different articles. Say what style every article is written in. (The first article is written in an

informal style because there are contractions: "don't", "it's". The second and the third articles are written in a formal style because there are special words of a formal style.)

— OK. Look at the cards. Read the strategies how to write an article.

На карточках:

1. Decide who your article is addressed to and what style it must be written in.

2. Begin your article with an intricate statement to make readers be interested.

3. Use short sentences, be laconic.

4. Write only the truth.

5. Use 80—90 words.

— Choose any headline in ex. 38, p. 70 or invent your own one. Use the strategies and write an article. Use the dictionaries if you need.

- Was it difficult to write an article? Do you feel to be a good journalist? Have you ever consulted a special career centre?

Урок 59.

Тема: Скромность - это хорошо?

Цель: развитие навыков монологической речи на основе текста.

Ход урока

I. Организационный момент

- Today we continue talking about newspapers. So, I am interested to know what newspapers you and your relatives read. Besides, we will discuss the problem of being shy and try to give advice to such people.

II. Фонетическая разминка

- First we are going to work on our pronunciation. Look at the blackboard. You see a tongue twister. Listen to my reading first.

- Translate the tongue twister into Russian. Learn to read it slowly. Then read the tongue twister in a natural manner. And at last read it as quickly as you can. What sounds do you hear more often? (M, [r], [p], [1], [9].)

Name other words with these sounds.

[k] - hurricane, earthquake, Milky, climb, create, etc.

[r] — run, write, read, rain, hurricane, etc.

[p] — pilot, play, spaceship, present, past, etc.

[1] — lion, fly, little, lunch, less, etc.

III. Речевая разминка

- Let's pass over to the media. Open your books at p. 71. Look through the texts in ex. 40 again. Then answer the questions in ex. 21, p. 87. Olga is a teacher. She will ask you the questions.

1. There are special centres which help teenagers to plan their future. They can also find the necessary information in the Internet.

2. Two world wars made the tunnel dangerous for Britain. Britain preferred to be safe from Europe.

3. It will offer financial assistance for research and teacher training. It will do a lot to save the environment in Russia.

IV. Обучение речи

  • - I would like to know what press your family is interested in. Open ex. 45 on p. 71 and fill in the table in writing.

— Now work in pair and compare your tables. Report to the class about your partner's results.

— We are going to read another type of articles where there are some problems of the youth discussed. But first look at the photos. Say where these people are; what they are doing and what they are like. (They are pupils of a school. They are sitting at the desks in a classroom. I think, they are going to have a lesson. They seem to be cheerful and sociable.)

- What about the girl, is she sociable? (Well, I don't think so. She is not sociable, she is shy.)

— Now read the article about shy people and give it a headline. See ex. 46. (It is a local article. It is advice to young people how to behave in different situations if you are shy. Its headline is "Dealing with Shyness " ("Don't Be Shy ", "Take It Easy ").)

— Before we go on discussing the problem have a rest.

VI. Развитие коммуникативных навыков

— We come back to the article now. It is easier to give advice than do something correctly. Try to do it yourselves. In pairs discuss the problem and write your advice completing the sentences in ex. 47, p. 72.

- Now if you are ready share your ideas with the class. Примерный ответ:

2. ...don't worry, just prepare for the exam on time.

3.... take your friend with you.

4.... try to travel by train more often.

5.... go in for climbing with your friends every weekend.

6.... work during your summer holidays to get money.

7. ...ask your best friend to come to you.

- Look through the text in ex. 46 again and prepare a short summary of it. Ex. 48 will help you. If you are ready come up to the blackboard and advise us how to behave.

- At home write your opinion on the sections of your local newspaper. Use the information form the exercise

- Which summary do you like most? Why? Do you know how to behave in different situations if you are shy? The most active pupils today are... Thank you for your work, see you next time.

Ход урока

I. Организационный момент

- We will start our lesson with your homework. Then we will discuss if it is dangerous to be a reporter and read some information about this job.

II. Фонетическая разминка

- Let's revise the previous tongue twister. Look at the blackboard and complete the lines.

Keys: Three; Cripple gate; Cripple gate; three.

- Now read the tongue twister as quickly as you can. Who is the winner?

III. Речевая разминка

- Let's check up your homework. Work in pairs. Compare your answers and report to the class about your partner's ideas.

IV. Обучение речи

— What job is connected with the media? Of course, it is a commentator, a TV or radio host/hostess, a journalist, a correspondent and a reporter. Let's discuss them. Do ex. 50 on p. 73. Work in pairs.

— You know, speaking about different people and things you must be politically correct. What does it mean? Read the information in ex. 51, p. 73. Now try to give correct answers to the questions.

Keys: a) elderly people; b) size-friendly clothes; c) special people.

— What do people of different professions do? For example, teachers? (Teachers leach people.)

— What is the result of their work? (The result is clever pupils.)

— Look through the words in ex. 52, p. 73. Put them into two columns like in the table. Now listen to the tape and check your answers.

— Do you want to know about people working in the media? Then read the text in ex. 53, p. 73. Give it a title. ("Why Do They Do It?" ("Is It a Dangerous Job?").)

— Why do journalists and photographers put themselves in dangerous situations? Discuss the problem working in groups of 3—4. Think of more reasons than in ex. 54, p. 73.

Now if you are ready share your reasons with the other students. Make a list of most important reasons and less important ones. Примерный ответ:

1. People are fond of scandals.

2. Photographers' pictures are of a high quality.

3. They enjoy their jobs very much.

4. They earn a lot of money for their job.

5. They are the only source of information during a war.

— At home continue your work with the words connected with jobs.

Ход урока

I. Организационный момент

— Today you will learn to use prepositions and pronouns. Besides, you will try to become a reporter.

II. Фонетическая разминка

- Start with pronunciation. Open your workbooks at p. 43. See ex. 1. First write the words, then pronounce them correctly. Pay attention to the length of the sounds in the middle: [i] or [i:]. (Live - leave; ship - sheep; fit -feet; sit - seat; it - eat.)

III. Речевая разминка. Проверка домашнего задания

- At home you did the task connected with different professions. Let's check it up. Read your sentences (ex. 25, p. 88).

Keys: 1. inventors; 2. reporters; 3. photographers; 4. talk show hosts; 5. architects; 6. producers.

IV. Обучение лексике

- What qualities do you think a good journalist must have? Open ex. 2 on p. 44 in your workbooks. Think for a while. Use dictionaries if you need. So, what is your choice?

Примерный ответ:

I think a good journalist should be courageous, because he may be in dangerous situations.

I think a good journalist should be curious because he must be eager to learn something new.

I think a good journalist should be smart and educated to know much.

I think a good journalist should be tactful and polite because he must communicate with other people.

- Which of the qualities are of good teacher (psychologist, poet, actor).

- There are a lot of prepositions in the text about reporters and photographers. Don't look at the text; try to complete the sentences in ex. 55, p. 74.

- Now if you are ready check your answers looking through ex. 53, p. 73. Have you got any mistakes? It's time to have a rest. Stand up, please.

- Now we are going to learn to use some pronouns. Study ex. 56 on p. 74.

- Do ex. 57, p. 74. Translate the sentences into Russian.

- Open your workbooks at p. 44. Translate the sentences from Russian into English. Use the necessary pronouns.

Для быстроты выполнения задания можно распределить предло­жения между учащимися.

Примерный ответ:

1. Whoever he is, tell him that I am busy.

2. Whatever they say, don't believe them.

3. However late you are, call me.

4. Wherever you go, I will go with you.

5. Whenever you ask for help, I will help you.

— As I have promised, you will learn to be reporters. To be a success you must think over typical reporter's problems. See ex. 58, p. 74. Choose the two most serious problems. How can you solve the problems?

— At home make up ten questions that reporters usually ask.

- What new words have you learnt today? What qualities do you have? What do you want to be? That is all for today. Bye.
