Can I make an appointment to see one of the doctors today, please? I can give you 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon or 9 am on Friday. Nothing earlier? I'm feeling really terrible and I'm sure I'm running a temperature. Sorry! The doctors are all fully booked up today. If you need emergency treatment, I suggest you go to the hospital. B: Thanks.

Dialogue В

A:

Oh, good evening! I'd like to see one of the doctors, please.

B:

Sure. Take a seat and I'll be right with you.

A:

Thanks.

B:

Now, before you can see the doctor, I need you to fill out this form so that we can get your details. Have you been to this Casualty Department before?

A:

Uh... No, I don't think so.

B:

Can I have your name?

Dialogue С

A: Excuse me. I'm looking for the Medical school. Do you know if I'm going in the right direction? B: Sure, urn. Go along this road, here, past the library and past the Great Hall. The Faculty of

Medicine is on your left. It's about three minutes' walk from here. A: Thanks very much.

Dialogue D

Next, please!

Good morning. Yes! I'd like to pay off my overdraft, please. I think I owe $50,00. Right. Do you have your account here at this branch? Yes, I do.

What's your account number? Um... I think it's this one here.

Yes. That looks right. How would you like to settle that? In cash...

Now we are ready to start.

Speaker A

There was a sign on the door saying the lock didn't work properly but I didn't see it until after I'd pulled the door closed. I wasn't really worried at first because I was pretty sure there were still some people in the building but after I'd spent about half an hour making as much noise as I could ... shouting at the top of my voice, banging on the door with my shoe-that didn't work!-I realised everyone else must have gone home. Then I had a few moments panic before I remembered I had my mobile. I rang my friend and ... well, eventually I got out.

Speaker В

I got to the hotel where the receptionist said I had no reservation. I thought, "Oh, great, just try to communicate through this." Only after an hour she found the error, and I was able to check into my room. To my disappointment the hotel had nothing to do with the one I'd booked. To get to the centre the metro I had to go nine stops! The only way I could tell where to get off was to fold back a finger at each stop. I knew absolutely nothing and got completely lost in the unknown town I was for the first time.

Speaker С

Susan warned us not to go into the water because there was a very strong current but it was the first day of our holiday and I couldn't resist. Then it all happened so quickly. Eddie and I were swept quite a long way out to sea before we noticed. I knew he wasn't a strong swimmer and I could see he was beginning to panic-so I just said to him very firmly 'Trust me'. I used the surf rescue technique I'd been taught and managed to get us both back to the beach. It was only then I realised how brave I'd been. It was just an automatic reaction.

Speaker D

No one remembered the last place we'd seen him but we all set out to look for him around the area of the picnic ground. It wasn't a very well-organised search and it was getting dark. We searched all the light and by morning things were looking bad. And then we heard a noise-a crying sound. I thought it was an animal. Then I realised it was a child calling. We ran forwards and then saw him. He'd fallen into a hole and broken his leg-but he seemed to be all right apart from the pain.

Speaker E

Hardly anyone used the pool in the winter and that day was so cold even the caretaker had gone inside to have a cup of tea or something. The trouble was he'd taken away the ladders that you use to get out of the pool. I didn't notice until I decided to get out. I tried to lift myself out but my arms weren't strong enough. After trying for ten minutes without success I was getting very cold. I tried to keep swimming but I couldn't breathe properly and it was difficult to move my arms and legs. I had swallowed quite a lot of water, and then I actually thought I was going to die. Then the caretaker came back and pulled me out-just in time!

This is the end of the task. Now you have 20 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 20 seconds.)

Now we are ready to start.

Greg: What are you doing for your holidays then, Tricia?

Tricia: I'm going to Italy, to Rimini, with my sister Kerry.

Greg: Lucky you! When are you leaving?

Tricia: Next Friday, actually, on the evening flight. It leaves at nine.

Greg: Where are you flying from? Birmingham?

Tricia: No, from Manchester. My brother Dick's driving us to the airport.

Greg: How long are you going to be in Italy?

Tricia: Three weeks. We're coming back on August 30th. That's a Friday, too.

Greg: What are you going to do there? Lie on the beach and then go and dance the night away in a disco?

Tricia: No, actually, not all the time. In fact we're going to study painting, and learn some Italian. And if there's time we want to visit Florence and Bologna.

Greg: Good luck!

Tricia: Thanks. What about you? Where are you off to, Greg?

Greg: Oh, I'm off with some friends from work, to Greece. We're taking caravans.

Tricia: That sounds great. When are you leaving?

Greg: We're catching the midnight ferry from Southampton on Friday August 15th...

Tricia: The midnight ferry? That's a good idea. And then you're driving through the night, are you?

Greg: That's right. And we're hoping to get across France and Italy in time to catch the ferry from Brindisi to Patras on Sunday the 17th.

Tricia: Ah, so you're stopping one night in Italy, are you, on the way out?

Greg: Yes, and one night in France on the way back.

Tricia: What are you going to do in Greece, then?

Greg: Well, we've got three weeks, so we're spending a week on the mainland to visit Athens

and Corinth and Delphi and so on, then spending the rest of the time visiting the islands.

Tricia: That sounds pretty active, too! And when are you coming back?

Greg: All being well, on September 7th, the Sunday, but you never know with caravanning!

Tricia: Hope you have a lovely time, anyway.

Greg: Thanks. Same to you. I hope you enjoy your painting!

You have 30 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 30 seconds) Now you will listen to the text again. (Repeat)

This is the end of the task. Now you have 20 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 20 seconds)
