The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then he/she will ask you some questions. C3 Student Card Task 2 (2-3 minutes) You've come to a language school. You would like to take an English course. Your parents can pay £30 per week. You have time to study on weekdays in the afternoon. • Greet the course administrator and ask about the school. • Ask questions and find out all the information you need: the timetable and the starting day, the price, the entrance exam (if you have to take it or not), etc. • Decide on the course you will take. You begin the conversation. The examiner will play the part of the course administrator. Remember to: - find out the needed factual information asking questions; - make suggestions; be polite. Dialogue С A: Do you need some help or are you happy just browsing? B: I'm okay, thanks. A: Just let me know if you want to try anything on. We've got more sizes out the back in case you can't find your size on the racks. B: Thanks. I'm fine. A: Right you are! Dialogue D A: I'm doing a survey on shopping habits. Would you mind answering a couple of quick questions? B: OK. As long as it doesn't take long. A: How often do you eat hamburgers? B: Never. I'm a vegetarian. I don't eat any animal products. A: Right. Can I just ask you? Are you wearing leather shoes? В: Yes, I am. A: Don't you think that's rather hypocritical? B: No, not really. A: I would have thought it was, myself! Speaker A Every weekend I go to clubs and parties and this is when I wear something stylish, something I would never wear to university. Then I just wear jeans and T-shirts, kind of casual clothes. But when I go to a party I wear some nice skirts or black pants with a nice top to match and I put on high-heeled shoes. I guess that makes me look more grown-up. Speaker В Oh, when do I dress up? Every day and for every event. I have developed my personal dress code. There are many different levels of dressing up. There is 'going drinking and dancing' dressing up, when I usually wear pants with a cute shirt. And then there is 'going to a wedding' dressing up, when it's more formal. And finally, there is work dressing up, and that's when I am more professional. Speaker С I have a very individual style of clothes, even in everyday life. And I like to put an effort into how I look when I go to parties or when I go to the nearest shop. I put on something very bright and a bit crazy. Some people are shocked when they see me in jeans or T-shirts but I do want to look cool. I like it when people look at me in clubs or at parties. Speaker D When I dress up, I usually wear trousers even to attend my friend's wedding or to go clubbing. It doesn't matter because I feel most myself when I am wearing trousers or jeans. I wear jeans a lot. I sometimes buy designer jeans though they are exteremely expensive. Speaker E When do I dress up? Well, I would say it depends on what I am going to do. For example, if I am going shopping, I put on dark jeans and old snickers. If I am going out with my friends, I also wear inexpensive, sensible clothes, like a black skirt and a sweater. I often buy them in second hand shops. I don't want to spend much money on clothes. You have 20 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 20 seconds) Now you will listen to the text again. Now we are ready to start. Maria: Hi, Steve. How are you? Steve: Good, thanks Maria. I'm fine. I was going to ring you tonight so it's a good thing I've run into you. I wanted to remind you about the field trip next week. Maria: What field trip? Steve: The Geography field trip to the Warragamba Dam and the Water Treatment Plant. It's a compulsory part of the first year Environmental Science course. Didn't you know about it? Maria: No! I must've missed that piece of information; this is news to me! But give me the details, please. Steve: Sure! Well, we have to meet outside the Library next Monday at 7 in the morning or you can meet us at 7.45 at the bus station in time to catch the coach which departs at 8 o'clock. Maria: Oh,.alright. And how long does it take to get to this place? Steve: Well, once we're on the coach, it will take about two hours... Er, no! Actually more like two and a half at that time of day. And it could take as long as three hours to come back the next day because of the evening traffic. Maria: And what's the purpose of the trip? Steve: Didn't you get the course outline? You don't seem to know anything about this course! Maria: Well, remember, I only started at the university a month ago, so I joined the course two weeks late and I've been trying to catch up ever since! Steve: Oh, of course! Well, we spend the first day visiting the dam. I believe we actually go inside the wall of the dam, which is really quite interesting - to see the dam functioning, you know, how much they regulate the water supply each day, depending on how much water is needed downstream in Sydney. Maria: Oh. OK. And um, so, if this is a two day trip, where are we staying? Not camping by the dam, I hope! Steve: No, no. Not camping. They do actually some overnight cabins near the dam for visiting groups, but we're spending the night in a youth hostel, in a town nearby. That's all been arranged by the university. Maria: And what about meals? Should we take our own food along? Steve: No, you won't need to do that. The hostel provides two meals, breakfast and an evening meal and we can find a cheap place to buy lunch. Maria: Great! So, is this the only dam that supplies water for Sydney? Steve: There are a couple of others too, but this is the main one. Maria: Well, with a population of over four and a half million people, I suppose we do use thousands of litres each day. Steve: Absolutely! In fact, according to my notes here, they pump the water through something like 20,000 kilometres of pipes and canals and store the water in 262 service reservoirs. And each day we use enough water to fill 600 Olympic swimming pools... Maria: OK, then. See you on Monday, and thanks very much for letting me know. You have 30 seconds to complete the task.
