T.: Good morning students! I’m glad to see you. Is everybody on time? I hope nobody is absent today. How are you, S1…? Are you ready for the lesson? Let’s start our working.
Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays traveling. They are fond of such a way of spending their holydays. What are the reasons of the fact that so many people like traveling? (на доске рисуем word web из ответов студентов). Questions:
Today we have a lesson of preparing to traveling to Great Britain. At our lesson we are going to speak about the most famous holidays and customs of Great Britain, Russia and try to compare them. British say “So many countries, so many customs”. (слайд) What is the Russian equivalent? Do you know it? (Студенты высказывают предположения). Каждая страна традициями полна. Before visiting a foreign country people have to learn its customs and traditions. Why? Any ideas? (Студенты высказывают предположения). Вывод: to know the customs and traditions means to understand the people, their art and culture better (слайд). That's why we are going to know more about holidays and traditions. Can you define the topic of our lesson? (British and Russian traditions and customs).

Definition of TRADITION a: an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior (as a religious practice or a social custom) b: a belief or story or a body of beliefs or stories relating to the past that are commonly accepted as historical though not verifiable с: cultural continuity in social attitudes, customs, and institutions Custom Frequent repetition of the same act; way of acting common to many; ordinary manner; habitual practice; usage; method of doing or living. Text In a world of technological change, we struggle to keep up with new developments, yet at the same time, many of us welcome the continuity and repetition provided by traditions. Some of our traditions are connected with places; others relate to the calendar and religious or pagan ceremonies. There are a number of towns and cities in Britain which are associated with legendary people or creatures. Tourists visiting Nottingham can take a trip to Sherwood forest where they can revive the legend of Robin Hood. A journey to Loch Ness, in Scotland, may result in a sighting of "Nessie" the famous monster. London is rich in traditions such as the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards Parade. The opening of parliament when members of the House of Commons are called to the House of Lords to attend the Queen's Speech is just one of many annual events. Annual religious ceremonies provide us with holly, fir trees and crackers at Christmas, and chocolate eggs at Easter. Other yearly events include Burns' Night in January to celebrate the birth of Scotland's great national poet, pancake day in February, April Fools' Day on 1st April and the crowning of the May Queen on 1st May. The Importance of Traditions The value of a tradition isn't in completing the ritual; the value comes from what it provides for those who participate. Traditions are important because they provide continuity between generations. It can be difficult to keep up with extended family members these days, and of course it is impossible to touch those who are long gone. But traditions create a bridge between the young and the old, between the past and the present. There are a lot of holidays. Nowadays people celebrate different holidays: public, national, religious and family (слайд). Name the holiday (слайды)
Now we are going to have speaking practice. You will tell us about British and Russian holidays. (Слайды). S 1.: Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. It is the most important holiday of the year. Christmas is a family holiday. People stay at home and spend the time with their families. The traditional food is turkey and Christmas cake. Christmas pudding is made of fruits. Over the end of the bed people hang stockings. Children believe in Santa Claus and he fills the stockings with presents. Every family tries to have Christmas tree, which is decorated with coloured lights. They also hang little toys, sweets and put presents under the tree. People send and receive Christmas cards, gifts and presents. On Christmas morning grown-ups go to church. But the children play with their new toys, sing carols. People wish each other : “ Merry Christmas!” S 2.: We love holidays in Russia too. We celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January. It is celebrated with all-night services in churches. Christmas is considered one of the main holidays of Christians, the second after Easter. On this day believers celebrate the major event - the birth of the Divine Son Jesus Christ who has come to earth to rescue human souls. This day in food it was possible to accept only so-called sochivo - boiled wheat (or rice) with honey and fruits. S 3.: The fist holiday of the year in Russia is New Year’s Day. There are a lot of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree with lights and decorations. Children always wait for Father Frost a Snow Maiden to come and give them a present. Many people think New Year’s Day brings happiness to all the year. We believe that the wishes of that day would realize during the year. So we wish a happy new year to each other. S 4.: Many people think New Year’s day to be a family holiday. But in England not all English people celebrate New Year. A lot of people go to Trafalgar Square to see the Christmas tree. They have a New Year party at home. When Big Ben strikes 12 they drink a toast for the New Year. Сравнение по слайду The next most popular public holiday is St. Valentine's Day S 5.: St. Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 14th of February in many countries. It's a day for sweethearts. It's the day that you show your friend or loved person what you feel. You can send candy to someone you think is special. Or you can send roses, the flower of love. Most people send " valentines". This holiday is popular among Russian young people too. Although we have our own holiday – the Day of family, love and faithfulness, which is celebrated on the 7th of June. Look at the picture and name the symbols of the holyday. And the next religious holiday is celebrated as in Russia as in Britain. Look at the symbols of the holiday S 6.: The Easter Bunny in England is to Easter what Santa Claus is to Christmas. The Easter Bunny has usually a basket of eggs. The East Bunny colors eggs for young children to find on Easter morning. Another symbol of Easter is the white lily, or Easter lily. S 7.: Russians have celebrated Easter for a long time and have many rich Easter folk traditions. Easter begins with the Easter mass, during which kulich (traditional Easter bread) and `pisanki` and `krashenki`(decorated or coloured eggs) are blessed in the church. After the mass all the people exchange Easter greeting, give each other krashenki, and then hurry home with their baskets of blessed food. Сравнение по слайду

All men in Russia are liable for call-up (including reservists), so they all are celebrities. On this day women usually give men small gifts).
