Richard MacAndrew. Inspector Logan. Cambridge University Press, 2008. – 30p.

Mid-year test for 1-year students. Task 1. There is a mistake in every line. Correct them carefully.
Task 2. Read the text, translate the passage from it in written form, define if the following sentences true or false?
Americans are not alike! Travelling around the USA, one becomes aware of regional differences, not only in geography, but also in the ways that Americans speak and act. Most Americans can tell what part of the country another American comes from just by listening to the speaker’s accent. Styles of cooking vary from place to place, influenced by different immigrant groups that have settled in that area. In addition, American personalities may differ somewhat form one to another. For example, New Englanders, are often described as stern and self-reliant, Southerners as gracious and leisurely, and Westerners as casual and friendly. People from southern California are considered especially eager to try new fads. Midwesterners are considered more conservative than Californians less worldly than New Yorkers. However, many regional differences have been erased by modern transportation, communication, and mass production. The average family income in the USA is in the $31,000 range, but it is significantly higher when both parents work full-time. Because there are so many things that American families want, it has become customary for American women to work outside the home. (passage for translation)When both the mother and father work outside the home, the lives of all the family members change quite a bit. Dad must help out more at home. The other children must be more independent and may be asked to take care of the younger children and help with the housework. The younger children spend less time with Mommy and more time in a day care center, with a babysitter, or with a grandparent. Even with all this help from the family, the working mother often finds that, between her paying job and her job as a homemaker, she is working constantly. Trying to be Supermom, she becomes exhausted and irritable. Some women hire household help in order to manage at home. Other simply do less work around the house. A few nights a week, dinner comes from the carry-out restaurant instead of the oven. 2 КУРС Mid-year test for 2-year students. (3 term) Task 1. Read the following text carefully & make a summary with a help of cliches. The art of conversation. Good conversation is an important skill in almost every situation. Whether it's on the job, with children, in everyday life, good conversation is important. Good conversation is based on a sensitivity to others. Ever wonder why the art of conversation is so important? The art of conversation is a skill of the most successful people. Good conversation promotes an image of self-confidence and intelligence. If you need to improve your conversational skills, here are a few tips that can help you improve your conversational skills: 1. Always say what you think, not what you think others want you to say. Effective leaders always say what they are thinking and express their ideas freely. The art of conversation is based on being yourself. 2. Listen carefully to what others are saying. Remember, the art of conversation includes the ability to listen to others as well as the ability to speak effectively. 3. Always assume that a speaker is saying exactly what they mean to say. Even if it seems unclear, try to find meaning and coherence (связь, логичность) to the words they are saying and give them the respect of hearing what they want you to hear. In any conversation, the ability to give respect is just as important as receiving it. The art of conversation is a give and take between parties, not one speaker and one listener. 4. The art of conversation can be broken down into three parts. The first part is small talk. Small talk is dictated by social rules and includes polite greetings, inquiries about the well-being of others, etc. Stage two is the end of the small talk and moving on to the purpose of the conversation such as business. Without the ability to express yourself efficiently, the conversation can easily slip back into small talk. The third part of a conversation is where the various ideas one can speak out. Why else should you learn the art of conversation? People who always seem to rise to the top of their professions and are well respected by others who share the ability to converse with anybody in every situation. People who seem to speak effortlessly and efficiently with others are highly successful. This is because they spent time learning the art of conversation. The art of conversation is a learned skill that is common among successful, energetic people. If you are unable to express yourself in any situation, you will find that you do not attract the attention of the others. Good conversation is a learnable skill so keep at it and you will improve. The only way to fail is to expect good conversation to happen without any work on your part. (by R.Holden) Conversation – беседа To promote – способствовать Tips – заметки |
