УПРАЖНЕНИЯ ДЛЯ САМОСТОЯТЕЛЬНОЙ РАБОТЫ Упражнение 1. Образуйте прилагательные от глаголов или существительных по образцу: move – двинуть, двигаться – movable – подвижный comfort, change, control, program, measure. Упражнение 2. Определите, к какой части речи относятся слова. reliable, elongate, percentage, stabilizer, stabilize, prospective, carrier, brilliant, relativity, intelligent, intelligence, assistance, fuselage, mainly, encircle, departure, statement, hypersonic, liner, horizontal, powerful. Its principal use to transport people or things by air. An airplane is of five main parts: the power plant, the fuselage, the flight control surfaces, the wing, the landing gear. Each part of the air plane has its function. The power plant is the heart of the plane. Its function is to develop thrust which causes the airplane to fly. The fuselage is a strong framework covered with metal. The early airplanes were made of wood covered with fabric. The fuselage houses the crew, equipment, load, control devices, fuel and oil tanks, power plant and passengers. The wing is a surface supporting the airplane in the air. The function of the wing is to provide a high lift and low landing speed. The plane having one surface on each side of the fuselage is a monoplane, the plane having two surfaces on each side of the fuselage is a biplane. Wings are classified as follows: delta wings, sweptback wings, tapered wings and variable-geometry wings. The flight control surfaces are ailerons, elevators and a rudder. Their function is to control the airplane in flight. The landing gear supports the aircraft on the ground, provides taxing, take off and landing. As a rule they are retractable. The landing gear has to be very strong. Задания I. ФОНЕТИЧЕСКИЕ УПРАЖНЕНИЯ Упражнение 1. Прочтите следующие слова, обращая внимание на их произношение: sufficient ramjet oxidizer compression require source advance payload friction Упражнение 2. TEXT Propulsion System In order to propel an airplane through the air the force is required. This force must be rather intensive for three reasons: to deflect air from the airplane to provide the necessary lift; to overcome the friction between the airplane and the air; to overcome the resistance resulting from the compression of the air ( when flight is in the supersonic regime ). The propulsion system must provide this force. Every propulsion system consists of: the fuel which is the energy source from which the force is produced for the required time; the engine which is the mechanical device by which the energy of the fuel is transformed into the propulsive force. Any aircraft propulsion system must meet certain requirements. First is low weight; second, the system must be reliable; third, the cost of the system must be sufficiently low. The total weight of the airplane can be divided among the airframe, the propulsion system and the payload. The payload consists of the crew, equipment and cargo. The weight of the propulsion system must be so divided between fuel and engine as to permit the airplane to fly a desirable distance without landing. The percentage of the gross weight alloted to the engine will vary from about one-tenth the gross weight in a long-range transport to one third the gross weight for a military interceptor in which speed, altitude and time to combat are of prime importance. The need for engine reliability is self-evident. Overall propulsion system reliability is increased by using more than one engine. At present the preferred number of engines varies from one engine on the small airplane to eight on large military bombers. In transports the use of four engines predominates. Reliability is determined by the length of time the engine can run without major overhaul. The time varies the use of the airplane. A time interval between overhaul of at least 800 hours is desirable. It is the jet engine which meets all requirements mentioned before. Задания I.
